I think it's fair to compare. It becomes a problem when it's a rivalry instead of seeing these as two different video games and what we enjoy about each of them.
It's an asymmetric horror game, of course it's gonna get compared to DBD. It'd be like making a modern shooter and not expecting to be compared to CoD or Battlefield, or making a MOBA and not being compared to League.
@@deivisnx yea, he really just asked questions like a reporter would do. I find it strange that TCM devs reacted this way, but I guess they want to make clear they have nothing to do with games like DBD.
I'll just give my 2 cents about comparing in general. You cannot tell people to not compare something new to something they are used to, it is just how human nature works. And there's nothing bad with comparing in itself: if you know that you enjoy something, you will get somewhat of an idea if you will enjoy something new, especially if it has some resemblance of the former. However, pushing your own preferences to others and being naggy with them is usually what causes the dislike towards making comparisons, because that's what a lot of people like to do with their own opinions. Comparing is healthy, being selfish with it is not.
But you can think what you want but at the end of the day they are two different games. All you can compare is that it’s a isometric horror game. Comparison is NOT always healthy and can ruin tons of games. People literally compared cyberpunk to gta5 when it came out. Yeah it’s natural but what’s healthy is putting those feelings aside
@@turkiedurkie4895okay, I play Dead by Daylight. I already own an isometric horror game with the largest collection of horror characters in existence. Why should I buy TCM? If you try telling me in any way how the game plays differently to DBD, you are now comparing the two games. There's nothing wrong with pointing out that TCM has the advantage that survivors each have their own unique abilities, or that DBD has a massive library of killers to choose from. It's only when people are comparing them to definitively say that one game is better than the other that comparing the games becomes problematic.
@@greatbrandini3967it is wrong to point out dbd has so many survivor/killers in the game as a advantage point to tcm because dbd is already out for 7 years. Of course it's gonna have more stuff. Just like Coconut said you're comparing and 80 year old man to a 10 year old boy.
Exactly. Welcome to business- consumers have the right to compare and contrast, and rather than get in your feefees about what was always going to happen, maybe you should prepare for it and take the commentary for the benefits it can bring while ignoring the rest. The devs reaction is, IMO, a mis-step and shows that the lifecycle of TCM is .... not looking good.
@@ryuno2097 why is it wrong? It's literally a fact. Gameplay wise, I personally think TCM is better from what I've experienced, but I still have to acknowledge the factual advantages of DBD over TCM
I'm just glad I can finally have a normal, casual, yet unique horror multiplayer game like TCM. The toxicity of the DBD community is just getting worse every time I play. With TCM it can give me a breather from what I had to play for so long. Have fun killing or surviving, whatever you prefer.
@@Rule34Haru Sadly after playing it for only 17 hours I've already got victims waiting at the exit and t-bagging... And it happened not only once, but probably over 1 game out of 10, which is already too much imo...
This is a massive issue in all avenues of life where people complain a lot based on comparison. I am glad you made this video. Hopefully we get ever closer to the days that we as people do not constantly try to draw comparisons because of the insatisfaction and lack of contentment it creates
some comparison is bad. some is good. if i feel im lifting some weights wrong, first thing im going to do is ask how other people do it and make adjustments so i can be make progress better. if im simply comparing outcomes or gains then yea, its going to make anyone feel like garbage. you need to compare things in order to create a scale for what is good or bad.
I think it's very clear that TCM doesn't want any competition with DBD and similar titles. In my opinion, I find TCM much more fun even when I die. I play victim a lot and even though I rarely escape, I still find myself having fun even while dying. This is something in my opinion I feel DBD doesn't do very well. Dying in DBD versus dying in TCM has a very noticeable difference. In DBD I often find myself blaming others for my own deaths, and blaming the game design as well. "Why did nobody save me in time?" "solo que sucks" "that killer is over powered" "there's nothing I could've done" are all things I say pretty often when I play survivor in DBD. I escape often in DBD, but when I don't I get upset and feel like there's something I could've done to prevent it. And in TCM it's very different imo. When I die in TCM it feels natural, and it feels like I just made an oopsie and I learned a lesson to help me next time. I love how stealth is fun, and I love helping out my teammates and I think I just have much more fun on TCM than I do on DBD. I just hope the toxic side of the DBD community doesn't turn it into another competitive game where everyone BM's each other. I've already seen a video on my recommend pop up where the title was something along the lines of "making killers rage quit in TCM!" and it kind of made me sad. The game is so fun, and I don't want it to become another DBD. Alongside that, I've seen people starting to say it's victim/family sided and I think it's balanced. If a vault location is OP, then family uses the power of teamwork to have Bubba cut the vault locations. If a victim gets caught, then it's almost entirely their fault that they didn't hide well enough and I honestly like it that. It feels like I did an oopsie and that's okay. in DBD it feels like my team mates did an oopsie and that isn't okay. I think you get the point. Sorry for huge rant, I just really care about this game for some reason.
yea dbd is surviors need to work together and tcm i feel survivors are just doing there own thing and all on you. then family is the teamwork one. had a game of family where a guy was talking shit to a bubba all game cause he didnt know what to do. i feel like the role just changed from dbd to tcm lol. but its a fun game and hope it does well.
6 days late but just putting in my two cents! yes! as a family main in TCM it feels natural to lose too , when i’m in a chase and lose a victim, i end up thinking ‘oh, i should learn the controls better’ or ‘i should’ve called for backup ’ instead of blaming the game or my teammates/opponents, imo it makes for a much more healthy and sportsmanlike environment (even though toxicity is inevitable)
Your “what do DBD players think of TCM” video was the first video I watched in regards to TCM. In the interest of going in blind, I avoided all TCM postings until that video landed. I really wanted to hear what DBD players thought so it was perfect for me. People being a$$holes and toxic is no surprise, but I’m glad you made that video.
I didn’t see it as starting a rivalry between DBD and TCM. Just like making some sort of common understanding for those that play DBD and who are interested in TCM and that they are two different games with the bare comparison of one side is killer, other is survivor. Kill or escape. Kinda like Friday the 13th game. All are different and unique in their own way with the bare comparison of killer and survivor
@@Luna.Tenebra Fits it pretty good actually. The genre is the same and the base format. Other than that, they're completely different. Same with DBD and TCM
I hope it separates itself as far from DBD as possible. I’ve been having way more fun with TCSM that I haven’t felt since old DBD. The amount of cool people I’ve played with in game chat is a breath of fresh air.
Give it time, people are people and everyone will either drop this game or start complaining about it like DBD. Right now everyone has rose colored glasses on because it's new.
I think it would be weird to NOT compare them. Like you say, the type of people who would be interested in TCM exactly overlap people who would be interested in DBD. That’s not to say you can’t only talk about TCM on its own merits, but to compare it to DBD is so completely natural that, at least right now, you have to go out of your way to not do it.
It's a small genre, so comparing is natural. Just like how one compares MOBAs, or Earthbound Descendants, or games similar to Minecraft, or Classic Roguelikes, or FTL clones, or Social Deduction Games. I don't think that's bad.
Too bad people get so crazy about this topic. I watched your video and I thought it was well done, fair, and informative. I make my own decisions. I saw nothing wrong with this video, but I am a grumpy old man...
Im glad u made this vid. I was also thinking this bc TCM and DbD are 2 different games and with TCM being more casual..... Its not really a good thing to bring the DbD toxicity to it.
fr I've already seen people trying to make others rage quit and t-bagging in TCM. Ayrun did a video called "looping family for 5 gens" and it's kinda sad tbh. They're trying so hard to make it something it isn't. I don't get why we can't just have a casual version of DBD 🤷🏽♀️
@@cyanea.well to start off, DBD and TCM can't be compared. They're both asymmetrical horror slasher and they follow the format of: killer vs survivor and kill or escape but that's about it. But yeah I get it. The first 3 matches I had on launch day were literally: I try to play normally whilst my mates tried to get me and themselves killed
@@cyanea. How is that sad? its just a funny title. And lets be real here, the 2 games do have a lot of similarity. I dont this the devs would get so upset about a comparison if the games really were that different.
I totally get the idea of not wanting your game to just be seen as a dbd alternative. But at the same time, i believe that tcm is honestly better and more fun (plus has where more potential).
I hope that TCM does well and provides good competition for DbD. DbD needs competition so they stop phoning it in with cloned events, awful maps and justifying their jobs with needless updates to the archives and new character portraits. I don't care about the us vs them crap. It's a shame that once the Alien chapter drops DbD will hit a high peak again and BHVR can continue to let their B team make DbD while they focus on other projects.
youre spitting absolute fire, the amount of people I saw commenting on youtubers videos about how they stopped playing but will come back to the game for alien is a bad cycle of returning for the new content and leaving for the stale gameplay, since the devs are still making money they have no real reason to switch that formula of keeping the game active with licenses
It doesn't matter how many licenses they get their game will be the same regardless. It's almost like they went full panic mode when they saw the good feedback TCM was receiving. It's cool Alien is there but Behavior aren't going to fool me with my money and I wouldn't be too excited considering the game will just be the same and the survivors might cry about Alien calling it op and the developers will just nerf them as always
I'm one of those people who love the game and only want to see it grow. It's the same feeling as when F13 came out, and it's the same developer. They've pulled off the magic twice in a row, and I can only hope that their relationship with Texas Chain Saw Massacre's ownership continues to flourish so that _something else_ doesn't also happen a second time.
I got huge respect for the way you handle stuff in the community, even though you don't have to go out of your way to say this you did, just goes to show your character! You growing on me! Hope we see more TCM!
The main problem is the bigger DBD content creators trying so pathetically and desperately to sell this game as a replacement, just so they can have a breather from the same game they've been playing for a paycheck the past 7 years. By shoving TCM onto their audience, its drawing people who are used to the min-maxing meta of DBD into deconstructing what would be a decent title into its unbalanced, unpolished core.
why i like dbd is the mind games and 1v1 with the killer and vice versa also all the stupid build you can do. the skill difference on taking killer for a 3 min chase or downing a survivor in less than 30 secs feels awesome. but i dont really play dbd to win. I just play dbd to have fun. My main comp game is Tekken 7. @@Jenny_Myers
Dead By Daylight... pff what I can say? Adding new content, and cash-grab dlc is how they keep their game alive, they focused far too long on additional content, and balancing the game around perks too much, that the game is reliant on grinding perks in order to gain value to escape efficiently and play well with your team... Let's not forget how long it took them to fix simple bugs let alone, the lack of base game changes with only small quality of life improvements. Nicolas Cage and Alien cannot repair the damage the developers have caused the game... We 7 years into that game and still relying on the player base feedback via what we all know as the PTB to balance their game as they have no idea what they're doing at all... The damage caused by DLC is adding perks that continue to make the game harder to balance around, thus is the reason why we should be focusing on base game changes rather than adding newer content, making said base game harder to balance long-term and this is not a healthy way of growing your game. Along with that the PTB service should only be warranted when a game is brand new and not lets say 7 YEARS into it's life cycle, it's a dying game, it's getting incredibly bloated and soon will fall behind most other games which arrive in the same genre. TCM for instance had only granted a technical test for players to test the waters on the servers and they are very passionate and knowledgeable about their own game to have confidence, not to need player feedback as they believe in their game.DbD is more pseudo fun only because of the new content but not because of the stale gameplay that still feels the same as it's 2016 counterpart with edges smoothed out, over the course of 7 years! DbD, wish they can be as good as TCM (not comparing at all) in terms of casual fun gameplay, which they let their players drive that into the ground. The meta evolves around perk builds which cost money or grinding so many hours... Then what? You play for fun? There's no meaningful progression in DbD and your fun is only based on if you like the gameplay which if you do, fair... CLEARLY have not been playing as long enough or at the best skill level to the point where you feel burned out with the game and that there is nothing else to LEARN! You cannot grow as a gamer, or content creator if the game is in a stalemate and refuses to acknowledge ip leaks among other many many issues wrong with the game... Sadly the only people who still put out content, NEED to, unlike Dowsey who would rather not put his mental health at stake, by forcing himself to play a game that he no longer believes in... The reason why you DbD content creators put up with this, is only because fear of losing revenue and viewership, which is a sell out in my opinion. This is not just about the developers incompetency, it's the entire direction that the game is heading and let me tell you this, it's not going to go further than 10 years if it's lucky, as you know DbD has licenses pulled and reverted all the time and will eventually run out of content to spill... They care solely about money and that is it.
You forgot to mention one class of people altogether, the people with a level head who liked playing DBD and now like playing TCM - or the people who will play both, or the one they enjoy the most in the end... You know, regular people who don't give a fuck about this drama.
This was an issue between TF2 and Overwatch when the latter first released. However it was encouraging to see the devs of both games set the tone by praising the other’s game and saying “We love that game and love this comparison,” reminding us players that two things can coexist and flourish despite their similarities.
honestly this is what i thought dbd was until i played it, you can play against friend but u get no BP's theres no casual mode or competitive mode no other objectives other then generator, unhooking and healing
I think the problem here is behaviour let people have bad behaviour constantly an actively supported bad behaviour and the dbd community is spreading its sickness everywhere. I have played dbd for years now and the hate level is off the charts but I often wonder if streamers pushed this as well as I’ve noticed even ortz is getting heated conversation from his own followers. Honestly I’ve never seen asymmetric games that didn’t fall into the us vs them mentality I think the game companies need to get on toxicity early and stop before it becomes a ground sell of hate
This has been the biggest issue all other developers have been dealing with when they attempt to make Asymmetrical games. Home Sweet Home, Resident Evil: Resistance, VHS, Prop Night, Ash VS the Evil Dead, etc. All of these games started off strong, and then were quickly ruined by the DBD community with a huge influx's of players that newer servers can't handle, comparing the game to the biggest asymmetrical game out there, and then being review bombed - not because they were bad games, but because they were not Dead by Daylight. There was even a developer from one of the games I've mentioned who came forward and told their remaining small and loyal player base that their game cannot keep getting updates, because of the bad report their shareholders received due to this sudden influx of players. It's heartbreaking honestly. BHVR won't comment on it, or do anything about it - it's clear they see this happening, but it's a free way to destroy the competition before it even has a fighting chance. Dead by Daylight is truly carried by a cult like following. Especially when you consider that DBD has one of the most vile, and self-entitled player base. I've watched my favorite game and community (DBD) go from being fun, cool, and exciting - Into a genre tyrant of toxicity and selfishness. I can only hope things change for the better in the future.
I didn’t get that from your video but feeling responsible and responding properly. This is why I appreciate and sub to you. I need to catch your streams to meet you on stream
I'm really happy you chose to acknowledge that you MAY have possibly done something to create a divide (I don't think it was that egregious imo), it just shows incredible amounts of maturity and care for the community.
I think comparison is healthy! A big portion of TCM's playerbase is most definitely burnt out dbd gamers. We've been waiting for something different to play for awhile, and TCM is the perfect shake-up for DBD gamers who are getting a bit burnt out/bored. That being said... it's all about how you compare the two. I think how you compared them was fine, if not bringing up some good discussions. But, some people have already bought TCM and left positive reviews on Steam saying things like "it's not DBD" or "so much better than DBD!". We can't compare which game is better than the other because TCM is approximately... 2 days old. It's an infant. It's breastfeeding still ffs. It still has many bugs that plague newly released games, it still has so much potential DLC to be added upon it.... and of course it's totally okay to prefer one game to the other. But leaving a positive Steam review saying "it's not DBD" makes the game seem like it's *only* merit or selling point is that it's a better version of DBD, or something similar in nature (yet better) to DBD. When in reality, this game wasn't made to directly counter DBD and give it some competition. It was made for Texas Chainsaw Massacre fans, and the fucked over F13 fans lol.
Sorry for bringing another comparison...but we have a matt on both games, the only thing that is missing is an interview where he says the texas chainsaw team did a pretty good job so far
I mean honestly I kinda low key disagree with this. Yes, we shouldn’t be comparing games to this new asymmetrical game to let it be completely different or have a chance at being completely different. This is where I disagree we as society are going to make comparison to things. We’ve always done that we never not compared things one from the other. So, to tell us what we should or shouldn’t do I feel like is wrong it’s just how our minds think as human beings. We try to connect things and that’s how we can relate to them. Now does that mean we are trying to start rivalry, no not necessarily. I don’t know I just think people are too sensitive on the topic thinking “ oh now I have to compete with the other games” no you don’t if people love your game even if you don’t get so much revenue as dbd doesn’t mean your game is bad or anything. Just means it may not be as popular as dbd. You know what? That’s okay. You don’t have to be at the top to be success. That thinking is so flawed in my opinion just shows how much of poor sportsmanship people have and can’t just be respectful of that concept.
The devs do not get to decide to simply not compete. That's not how the market works. We, as people, have a limited amount of time and money to spend on things. Any amount of time and money we spend on one thing is not spent on another. That is how literally the entire planet operates. There IS competition, there IS rivalry. It's an unavoidable fact of life. There is nothing the devs of either of these games can do to stop people comparing them, because in order for us as people to make the decision "Which one should I play? Which one should I spend money on?" we HAVE to compare them. This even goes between genres to a lesser extent, but typically genre divides can mitigate this due to the fact that people have already pre-decided what genre they want to play and therefore trivially and automatically eliminated any options outside of a genre and are therefore not making comparisons between genres. Although it isn't at 0, especially for hot topic games releasing at simialr time windows (A Cardinal sin that should NEVER be done, but is anyways because corporations are dumb and think gamers give the faintest of fucks about what time of year it is. Only moms and grandmas care, because they want to buy christmas stuff for their kids- so only games for kids really have to worry about that.)
To me, there is nothing wrong with anything Coconut did. People do this all the time (Paladins and Overwatch. Overwatch and Team Fortress. Dark Souls and Bloodborne). It's natural to draw comparisons because at the end of the day, people will compare new experience to familiar ones. It's just how it works. Also, in addition to that, why would anyone care that people are comparing the two games together? They're both survival horror games and actually, Dead By Daylight is pretty popular. So if you compare the two games, both fans AND nonfans of DBD will most likely check the game out to see if it's something that will interest them. If anything, I view streamers and gaming content creators as free marketing for their games. I understand that maybe the people who don't want the two to be compared may feel as if people are undermining their work on their project, but to me, why is it such an issue? Everyone is commenting on what makes it different from Dead By Daylight and lots of people will view these points as absolute pros and will check out the game themselves. Idk. I feel it's a bit strange to be upset at the comparison because ultimately, it's more exposure for your product. Also, the game is being received well, so again, what's the issue?
On one hand It’s absolutely fair to compare these two games because they’re in the same genre and both lean on horror franchises/genre as a whole. If they don’t want to be compared to DbD then I guess don’t make a horror asymm, simple as that. The problem that comes into play is when people get toxic with the comparisons and rag on the newer product for not being as feature complete as its competitor, or when the devs try to alter their game based on the comparisons for the worse. It’s a very thin line because comparisons can help devs figure out what needs to be implemented to make their respective games better but at the same time can kill a budding project like this.
I agree. However, my only complaint is the non-existence of cross gen. There is absolutely no reason to exclude the older gens, ie Xbox One and PS4, and make those 2 gens play exclusively together while newer gens are full cross platform. With the current state of the game, I cannot play with family and friends as they have older gen consoles.
Literally, they are different games. I play dbd, evil dead, and Texas chainsaw, and when I want to switch between them I just do. They are different ways to be entertaining, different ways to play. And in the end I’m still antisocial and don’t want to turn on voice chat
Tbh I don't mind people comparing the two if it's done out of them trying to see if they'll enjoy something new. I think it's pretty normal to draw some parallels to help you figure out if something is for you. The thing that annoys me personally is the whole: "Will this game kill DBD?" "That's it. DBD will die." "Will this finally be the game that kills off DBD?" "Will this game die in the first month?" "This game will be dead in 2 weeks lmao" I have started to viscerally hate the trend of "dying games" or "game killers". I hate how every update in a game, people love to say: "Lol this game is gonna be dead by the end of the month." "This game's already dead" and how /every/ game coming out that is even SLIGHTLY similar to DBD has to have this pressure of being the "DBD killer". Why can't games just coexist? Why does there have to be a SUPREME game? This isn't even only a DBD issue. This trend of calling games dead (when they're doing well) is prevalent everywhere. Comparing them isn't the issue. It's this mentality that seems to exist of: "This game HAS to kill off DBD or it's a shit game that will die in 1 month." that I think everyone is sick of including the devs. Both TCM's devs and BHVR's devs. If I was a dev on either of the games I would hate to see the majority of the comments be this nonsense rivalry that's similar to a dick swinging contest.
I have to dissagree. The comparison is natural, not to mention that comparing things is a basic human behavior, the devs shouldn't be upset that people are comparing their 3 killers vs 4 survivors to a 1 killer vs 4 survivors, that even have a matching character. And is thanks to the similarities that the game is having a good start in term of popularity. I also don't think this was pointed a you Coco, it was in general. Pretty much everyone in voice chat in the game mentions "toxic by daylight". I honestly don't understand what Mister Dev Matt was expecting.
Competition isn't toxic. It's been the foundation for growth for thousands of years. This is a ridiculous apology, TCM wouldn't exist if DBD and other games didn't already have a vision, developed game, and market established. Could you imagine if Apple got angry on twitter when Samsung created their smartphone which was extremely similar to the iPhone and took many core ideas from them? From what I've seen, these TCM devs seem like they just can't handle the pressure of public opinion. Which is really unfortunate, because their success is completely dependent on public perception and willingness to play their game.
Didn't get the chance to watch much of the DBD players on TCM video, but I wanted to add in my own thoughts as well (warning in advance for a wall of text). One thing I thought right out the gate is how weird it is to compare two entirely different games with entirely different premises to each other. Regardless though, it's all good Coco! People make mistakes, but the important thing is to learn from them, and you did just that! Now for my take on the matter: Games in general can and should co-exist. Many people forget that because they're all too familiar with their favorite game with 1000 or 2000 hours or so; it's like their stomping grounds in a way. Games in the asymmetric horror genre like Identity V, Project Playtime, Home Sweet Home Online, all exist and are still playable today (all of these are free as well). I'm not saying comparison is entirely a bad thing and should be considered taboo, but when these players go around to other games expecting a lot of similarity to DBD, they tend to treat them as those stomping grounds. Then they compare way too much instead of focusing on enjoying the game. Expectations are the problem, or a big part of it anyway. As someone who clocked in 576 hours on VHS (Level 95 Dollmaster/Jess with all their mastery badges), and played in both betas, it was actually really fun without comparing to DBD, or having any expectations for it whatsoever. Sure, you can't deny the dev team made mistakes along the way that brought about some backlash, and in some cases it's completely justified within reasonable criticism. Even I hated some of the stuff that happened, but again, we're human. We make mistakes too, and that's okay, so long as we address them, learn from them, and not let them define us or the games we play. Seeing Hellbent shutting down its servers soon got me really upset, but not exactly at them. More so at those who kept comparing the two games and holding all these high expectations. The dev team worked so hard to bring VHS to life from start to finish, only for it to die before a year of its release passed, with so many plans having gone to waste. It's also important to consider this was their third game after Wick and Brutal Orchestra (both are good games I can personally recommend), and their first live-service game ever. Hell, BHVR themselves even had healthy interactions with HB when the latter announced their beta servers were back up. I'll link that moment having done some digging, and you'll be able to see what I mean: twitter.com/DeadbyDaylight/status/1530217309230481409 A quote I always live by: "Comparison is the thief of joy", and in these kinds of situations in particular, it really holds true. We all have to remember games should be able to coexist in order to bring about variety, new ideas, and new life to the genre that can help all of these games grow their communities together. DBD may be the biggest asym game in the genre (not counting Among Us), but it doesn't mean others can't have their shine too! No game has to kill another to be fun, nor should it. Sorry if this looked like I was venting, but I really felt the need to put this out there.
Comparisons are easy to make in order to describe something, especially when you know that most who are engaging with the information being provided are knowledgeable about one of the things being compared. Totally fair and good to compare, but I get where they're coming from.
this is a rly good take man, sick of ppl complaining so much about tcm especially the killers that they dont get 4 kills every time, its actually annoying. i like that you have actual stuff to say
Generalized comparison aren't bad, but they need to have a healthy, positive vibe and provide criticism constructively. Both games should celebrate their wins, even over each other, but as I said to Matt, it just needs to be done right. They can both exist and be their own thing. I have DBD watches what TCM is getting right, and figures out ways to implement well received features, even as new game modes with entirely new mechanics. It could be huge. I would love a DBD version where survivors can take more hits before going down, and killers are sped up accordingly in movement speed and cooldowns for example. My biggest complaint with DBD is the insta-down into a camping killer and that's my entire 5 minute match. Not possible in TCM, and that scenario not being possible, is extremely healthy for TCM.
heres the thing: us vs them mentality is humans in a nutshell. You can actively do what you can as an individual to mitigate it, but humans in groups naturally trend towards it and not everyone is going to be bothered to do that individual work, as its hard, time consuming, and requires forethought and introspection. whether you like it or not, once a game is popular in a genre your game WILL be compared to it if your game is the same genre. Rather than pretend you can avoid this, wouldnt it be better to encourage sportsmanlike us vs them? This seems equivalent to the devs trying to stick their heads in the sand to avoid dealing with the reality They say "it doesnt have to be a rivalry" but at the end of the day, pretty much every PVP game requires a good number of hours played to become proficient at the game and even more hours to get GOOD at the game. The games are inherently competition for each other, because the majority of players arent going to have enough time for both, especially if they want time for other things be it other games, other forms of media, real life interactions, etc. The game in the same genre is inherently a rivalry when they are targeting the same demographic of players and are competing for said players attention when there isnt time for both. its all well and good if you want to be that way to say "you shouldnt compare games" but thats a normal thing to do. If I have nothing to compare to, i have no frame of reference to determine whether something is well done or poorly done, good for the game or bad for the game, good for ME or bad for me. Whether you admit it or not, all of us compare games to other games even if its only subconsciously and we do so because we rightly have expectations on what a game is and what makes it fun. there isnt anything wrong with that, its a normal thing to do. players who let comparisons turn quickly to judgement and constructive criticism to un-ending negativity and unrealistic expectations are not the same thing as comparing games and need to be treated as their own beast. I get where theyre coming from, not wanting to create a toxic environment, but at the same time the whole concept here that they can somehow control the narrative as the devs and create the exact environment they want at all times is naive. that kind of thing only works in a vacuum, it doesnt work when you add real world players to the mix. you, as devs, can do your best to create a good environment and try to encourage behavior you want, but at the end of the day the players are the ones who are going to be deciding those things. PVP games by their very nature create and us vs them mentality, my team vs your team, player vs player, its literally the point of the genre. Rather than pretend you can avoid this, wouldnt it be better to encourage sportsmanlike us vs them? This seems equivalent to the devs trying to stick their heads in the sand to avoid dealing with the reality
Weird take, I don't think you should apologize like for making a comparison. I don't see that this creates an "us v. them mentality" like I watch you play dbd and tcm, you are a chill person and so is your community. There was nothing bad in the video you mentioned, it was just feedback from players there is nothing bad about it and it was very honest because people didn't prepare for it like on a survey or something. It is what comes to their mind when you asked them and that is cool imo. It is perfectly fine that they do their own thing and I for one always have had the mindset that both games can coexist even tho I am not sure about the longevity of tcm, that remains to be seen.
Considering that the two games share the same playerbase, it's always going to be compared and it's redundant to try and stop it. While tcm might be its own game, it's a direct competitor to dbd and will always be compared as it shares the same players. The fact that the devs don't understand that and are actually getting upset merely by the games being compared tells me that they're not only snowflakes, but that they don't even understand the community that their game is catering to. If they don't know their playerbase, then this game will fail.
I mean it's a similar game style. Killer vs Survivors and Family vs Victims. 1 vs 4 and 3 vs 4. Two asymmetrical games. You didn't do anything wrong and the dev seems to have their panties in a bunch over something that is a completely nonissue. Saying "well they're played similar" isn't a false statement. This is like the Halo vs Call of Duty rivalry all over again, where they were compared between the communities of the games but Bungie or Activision didn't come out and say "we're doing our own thing" no they let their games talk for themselves. This dev's statement just makes me feel like they don't have faith in their product if it's compared to DbD.
It is basically impossible to not compare similar games Dbd and Tcm are asymmetric horror Ow2 and Tf2 are class based fps Minecraft and Roblox are sandbox Binding of Isaac and dead cells are roguelike Dark souls and crash bandicoot are difficult Sonic is an asshole Anything with even a sliver of similarities, even if they have very little in common, they will be compared to eachother and thats just how it is
I think you are good Coco. I believe is directed towards "journalists" like IGN and The Escapist. Last one was just "Bias. I can only play DBD: the essay in 3 minutes" . A better comparison is to F13 tbh. I like that you can be by your own, you don't have to rely on others, and that the "Final Girl" trope is accentuated in TCM. (Ahem, better than a RNG hatch escape) Is true they both compete for your TIME, most products do. Is always good that there are alternatives. And my gripes with TCM as it stands by its own are: -the lack of a ping system (not everyone wants to talk or even speak the same language). -Servers dodging, people not playing as who they want. Which perhaps could be solved if you could equip one (or two) secondary less impactful power shared between victims. Like say Leland's bash but you do a small shove. Or being able to silently rush bone scraps. Sensing what doors are unlocked for few seconds. Little abilities here and there. -A saved build in case you have to use another character and respec points in the lobby. -If you were to start with 3 victims, some random doors are unlocked.
One brings more bullshit into the table and one brings out fun and enjoyable without having to sweat your balls out with all these dumb second chances and what not.
respect, i had stopped watching the original video becuase i simply wanted to see gameplay. I love the difference between the game, glad you made this video to possible calm the waters
No no no. It is perfectly healthy and normal to compare things. TMC is similar to DBD in concept. Maybe not in gameplay but it's similar enough to compare. Not statistics but at least experience. If you're having more fun with dbd. Or if you prefer a feature in one game than another. That's valuable. Incredibly valuable. It allows both entities to improve and see where they're lacking. I hate the idea that we can't criticize or compare things because this allows growth and both games need that desperately.
Going off of the "Number doesn't tell the full story" example you gave, while it's true comparing content off of one metric isn't a good idea, that's not to say something can't be learned from understanding what leads to said metric, and comparing the approach taken to the effectiveness of another.
There are certain inevitable realities when it comes to this industry, and the devs had to have known this. And I'm not certain that it's a 'mistake' to draw comparisons amongst two or more options in any one genre or niche. They ARE competitors, regardless of intent, and that's just a fact. Let's say you have enough $ to buy one or the other but not both. Enough said. This is business, basically, and content creators are just a small factor of that inevitability. Game review sites are going to do it, writers are going to do it, fans are going to do it. Furthermore consumers have the RIGHT to do it. Commercialism depends on that right. Telling your consumers that they can't is hilariously unrealistic. If you can't stand the heat....
It's natural and okay to compare things. The issue comes from the judgement that follows. We use experience and previous knowledge to understand what something new will be like even though we haven't experienced it yet. This is natural for humans to do and it's okay. It's okay to discuss the sames and differences. But we also can benefit from experiencing TCM in it's own light. If we focus too hard and criticize because TCM doesn't do this as well and does that worse etc, that's not right. I think that's an important thing to keep in mind. You know those developers were comparing their ideas to games like DBD in development. Anyways, Mad respect for the video.
i think 80% of people have been comparing dbd and tcm too closely since reveal, EVEN THOUGH gun media thenselves said early on that they are never meant to compete, but coexist. hopefully people can let the few likenessess to dbd aside and allow tcm to thrive as its own entity, not a "bad dbd rip off" - some dbd leaks member 2k23
As a person who still plays dbd with massive ping, I like comparing dbd to similar games and do enjoy watching gameplay. I prefer to think that the newer games are cool and gives me the same joy as opening a present.
@@luxxers I see more people bitching about DBD players than I do see DBD players attacking TCM. Some people just have a weird hate boner for DBD and can't let it go. It's a little sad.
@@jonathanc9675 Yeah and there’s also this weird fallacy going around that apparently dbd players are ruining TCM etc etc. People said this about VHS but the reality is this just happens to any game that has a competitive aspect to it, people are going to sweat once they master the mechanics. I really wish people would quit scapegoating dbd and actually focus on actual problems with the game.

@@luxxers Yeah there was a tweet that went viral saying Otz would kill TCM because he added a kill streak counter to his TCM stream. It was so lol ALL PVP multiplayer games become competitive once players master the mechanics. It's up to the devs to design and balance a game so things still stay fresh & fun.
regardless of what the developers want, it's fair to compare them. what's not fair is to create divisive communities like xbox vs playstation when in fact DBD and TCM can be played and enjoyed simultaneously. these two games don't have to compete. they can coexist and complement each other tbh and I enjoy watching both. sorry but when you put your work up in public, it's up to the public to interpret and make of them not the author/developer. comparison =/= toxic competition/exclusion
tcm and dbd have some similarities, one of these is its genre. BUT its so much more different too! the only thing that is hurting the game is people comparing these two, constantly, and people saying it's going to die in a week. why so negative? this game has so much potential to be greater than dbd, with a better community. already, the mentality of "it's gonna die, it will never be as good as dbd" is so negative and it hurts everyone that wants to enjoy the game and see it shine. it's a whole other game!!! let's enjoy it:)
As someone with a lot of time with dbd. I dont play tcm for the same reason i play dbd. They offer different experiences. I love both and both have issues
You know it'd be a good thing to get rid of the sweaty competitive mindset people have in casual games, like relax bud, you ain't getting a x100 reward for winning, don't ruin your own day and other's cause you lost one match in 5 minutes
I'm so glad you made this video. After I read the title of that other video you made I did not watch it. I also do no participate in Dead by Daylight Twitter/X. This shows maturity on your part and you have my complete respect for it.
Yall gotta quit comparing games. Its like comparing street fighter to Tekken. They coexist and have their own fanbase with the core mechanics being a fighting game.
I dont think that it is a mistake comparing two games to each. I do acknowledge the fact that comparison can lead into rivalry. But come on, no one can unsee two games with very similiar mechanics and genre and not compare that in the mind. And talking about this is very normal. Also trying to block it probably will lead to an opposite effect.
I do know for sure I’ve noticed that many dbd players try to play it like dbd and get upset when some things don’t work that would in dbd, I’m a dbd player and I didn’t go in expecting it to play like it, I expected Friday the 13th gameplay but they made it better, I do compare some things, but the players that try to play it like dbd gotta stop, I had a match as leatherface and my teammate left cause I was LF and then three victims sat at an exit for like 10 minutes waiting for me while they tbagged me then left
They're just competitive products it's not that deep
Dbd is more of a chase game, this is a lot more hiding

Sadly that's how all games are. After a couple months. Those toxic players are going to plague TCM. Hopefully there aren't many
yea dbd is surviors need to work together and tcm i feel survivors are just doing there own thing and all on you. then family is the teamwork one. had a game of family where a guy was talking shit to a bubba all game cause he didnt know what to do. i feel like the role just changed from dbd to tcm lol. but its a fun game and hope it does well.

This was an issue between TF2 and Overwatch when the latter first released. honestly this is what i thought dbd was until i played it, you can play against friend but u get no BP's theres no casual mode or competitive mode no other objectives other then generator, unhooking and healing
The fact that there are other Asymmetrical Horror Games coming soon and there's no telling what would Toxic DBD Players might do something with it...
Tbh, the Texas chainsaw game just seems it’ll be a mix of Friday the 13th (the game) and dead by daylight
1:40 "Excruciatingly Toxic" Bro put his mind, body and soul into sync with that one😂😂😂 said that shi with passion
Also, the game is being received well, so again, what's the issue?
that chainsaw space guy.... you need a holiday
If I worked for dozens of dozens of hours just to constantly get compared to another game I'd be a bit pissed as well
I dont think you did anything wrong, comparing games is not wrong, the problem is making it a fight between the two games, something you did not do.
Good video, I love all these Asym games. I main play DBD but love this and loved Evil Dead (wish the Devs would revive that one!!)
How dare you compare the game to other games ? Thats unheard of !
My god why are all developers annoying crybabies nowadays ?
The point is being friendly fandoms, like how OFF's likes YN's, or AA's likes Ghost Trick. But if that's their wish, I shall not compare them ATM
I agree. However, my only complaint is the non-existence of cross gen. There is absolutely no reason to exclude the older gens, ie Xbox One and PS4, and make those 2 gens play exclusively together while newer gens are full cross platform. With the current state of the game, I cannot play with family and friends as they have older gen consoles.
i just want to play the game for 10 minutes without my whole party getting kicked and having 23+ numbers in my code when it only takes 6
Literally, they are different games. I play dbd, evil dead, and Texas chainsaw, and when I want to switch between them I just do. They are different ways to be entertaining, different ways to play. And in the end I’m still antisocial and don’t want to turn on voice chat
this needs to hit the algorithm pleaseeee
Comparing is not a bad thing. It could help show bhvr what features from tcm might work well in dbd, and vice versa. I have enjoyed both games so far.
Tbh I don't mind people comparing the two if it's done out of them trying to see if they'll enjoy something new. I think it's pretty normal to draw some parallels to help you figure out if something is for you.
The thing that annoys me personally is the whole: "Will this game kill DBD?" "That's it. DBD will die." "Will this finally be the game that kills off DBD?" "Will this game die in the first month?" "This game will be dead in 2 weeks lmao"
I have started to viscerally hate the trend of "dying games" or "game killers".
Now for my take on the matter:
Games in general can and should co-exist.
I'll link that moment having done some digging, and you'll be able to see what I mean: twitter.com/DeadbyDaylight/status/1530217309230481409
A quote I always live by: "Comparison is the thief of joy", and in these kinds of situations in particular, it really holds true.
TCM devs are just salty. You can't have a game in the same genre as another popular game and not expect them to be compared.
DBD players will find new asymmetrical games because they're tired of DBD then get disappointed the game isn't DBD.
Telling humans not to try and oneup each other is like telling humans they can’t breathe humans are very competitive species
not trying be negative but there is really nothing u can change ab it
this is a rly good take man, sick of ppl complaining so much about tcm especially the killers that they dont get 4 kills every time, its actually annoying. i like that you have actual stuff to say
i think the term is "comparison is the thief of joy"
This seems equivalent to the devs trying to stick their heads in the sand to avoid dealing with the reality
They say "it doesnt have to be a rivalry" but at the end of the day, pretty much every PVP game requires a good number of hours played to become proficient at the game and even more hours to get GOOD at the game.
Comparing games is good, fanboying is bad. Dev has a point but I find his tweets a showcase of insecurity really.
All asymmetrical horror games can co exist with one another.
The only thing I noticed similar between the games is that my teammates in both were tea bagging at the exit gates 😂
Lets ignore the video hes got a genshin impact daily tab
"(...) This type of comparison makes the Dbd community... Cof Cof... Survivor players... Cof Cof... excruciatingly toxic (...)"
No one gonna talk about the gr shin impact folder
It is basically impossible to not compare similar games
Dbd and Tcm are asymmetric horror
Ow2 and Tf2 are class based fps
Minecraft and Roblox are sandbox
Binding of Isaac and dead cells are roguelike
Dark souls and crash bandicoot are difficult
Sonic is an asshole
Anything with even a sliver of similarities, even if they have very little in common, they will be compared to eachother and thats just how it is
I think you are good Coco.
(Ahem, better than a RNG hatch escape)
Is true they both compete for your TIME, most products do. Is always good that there are alternatives.
And my gripes with TCM as it stands by its own are:
-the lack of a ping system (not everyone wants to talk or even speak the same language).
The TCM game is gre"internet ping time is too large to play"
respect, i had stopped watching the original video becuase i simply wanted to see gameplay.
They are selling a product made to be consumed, it will be compared to other similar products thats how competition works.
Repair damage that you’ve done? What damage have you done?
i think 80% of people have been comparing dbd and tcm too closely since reveal, EVEN THOUGH gun media thenselves said early on that they are never meant to compete, but coexist. hopefully people can let the few likenessess to dbd aside and allow tcm to thrive as its own entity, not a "bad dbd rip off" - some dbd leaks member 2k23
As a person who still plays dbd with massive ping, I like comparing dbd to similar games and do enjoy watching gameplay. I prefer to think that the newer games are cool and gives me the same joy as opening a present.
At the end of the day you can compare thing's, there's nothing wrong with comparison at all. Games can coexist with one another perfectly fine.
The DBD community is their own worst enemy.
this video isn’t about DBD?
@@luxxers I see more people bitching about DBD players than I do see DBD players attacking TCM. Some people just have a weird hate boner for DBD and can't let it go. It's a little sad.
@@jonathanc9675 Yeah and there’s also this weird fallacy going around that apparently dbd players are ruining TCM etc etc. People said this about VHS but the reality is this just happens to any game that has a competitive aspect to it, people are going to sweat once they master the mechanics. I really wish people would quit scapegoating dbd and actually focus on actual problems with the game.
@@jonathanc9675 hey, I like DBD, but much of the community is a self-cannibalising, tribalistic heap of garbage and everyone who's experienced that firsthand has a legit reason to remember it's not pleasant to interact with
@@luxxers Yeah there was a tweet that went viral saying Otz would kill TCM because he added a kill streak counter to his TCM stream.
It was so lol
ALL PVP multiplayer games become competitive once players master the mechanics.
I think Matt should worry a little more about fixing there trash ass communication system for game chat. Then he can worry about us comparing games.
tcm and dbd have some similarities, one of these is its genre.
They gonna have to deal with comparing
I respect this. Good video, Coco.
My main problem with both games is balance end of ...
3:00
This sounded like experience talking.
You know it won't stop people from making videos about that, that's how vindictive and toxic dbd is in general.
