Sounds even better when translated to german as it has an awesome aliteration there: "Selten wie Schaukelpferdscheiße" "Schaukelpferdscheiße".....I will fight for this word to officially enter the german dictionary.
I'm fascinated by the X68k, it's an amazing machine and I'd love to own one. I've messed around with its weird pseudo-DOS OS and games in emulators before.
Japanese computers were just plain awesome. Expensive, but they often had games that were really unique and often close to arcade perfect. The PC-9800 line, the MSX, the X68000 here. Japan was a wonderland of gaming in the 80s and 90s.
I saw this running on an actual x68k not too long ago. The entire setup to get it running is majestic. There were other arcade games running on it that blew me away. For it’s time, this thing was a cross between a NeoGeo and a Genesis. It was a seriously intriguing piece of modular hardware.
I love the multiple soundtrack options in this one. Game music in general was fantastic when they worked with actual "limited" soundchips like Yamaha YMs and Sony DSPs. Now everything is just boring "realistic" orchestral scores streamed from the disc, not even using any soundchips whatsoever, so unimaginative. I'll take Magician Lord's awesome FM soundtrack over any modern game any day of the week. That 15-channel YM2610 is killer.
Well said! Its like for most games I am not even listening to the background music.. Sad.. Gone are the days were music pumped to play even better and pass the difficult parts of the game!
Thank you Sega Lord. No one really talks about this game. I been telling other RUclipsrs to do a video on it for a while but no one gives it any love. The game definitely has it's own charm. Awesome video bro.
I do not think many people have a ton of experience with it. It's hard too, and without a password system in place to jump to levels, it's gonna kick your ass capturing gameplay for newcomers.
I so wanted a Sharp X68000 back in the days! This system is cool as hell, with awesome ports of Sega and Capcom arcade games, original games such as this and countless shmups!
@Mike Jones I would likely not have left the house for a year. :) I grew in the former USSR. In 1987, all we had were weird clones of arcade games from the 70s, rare ZX Spectrums and even rarer MSX and MSX2s computers. NES (known as "Dendy" in the former USSR) and Master System didn't become common until the the 90s. MSX2 blew me away the first time I saw it running Penguin Adventure around 1988 and got me hooked on video games for life. I thought that surely video games didn't get any better than that! In reality, that system was deficient compared to even the NES and the Master System. If I saw any 16-bit system at that time, my mind would've been completely blown. If I saw something like a Sega super scaler arcade cabinet, I probably would've just stood there staring for an hour, drooling and crying from happiness, thinking that I've traveled to the future. :) As far as the X68000, I think I first learned about it at around 1993, when I was already living in the US and owning a Genesis. Being an MSX2 fan in the past, I became really fascinated by the idea of a powerful 16-bit Japanese gaming computer. I mean, even at that time, it was way more capable than the 16-bit consoles, producing perfect Capcom CPS1 arcade ports and excellent super scaler ports as well. It also had a number of good flat-shaded 3D games, which went far beyond Star Fox. Seemed a lot better than the Amiga and ST too, especially with all the AAA Japanese third party support. So yeah, I really wanted one even that late into its life cycle. Hell, I would love to mess around with one right now too! I'm just starting to build up my retro gaming collection though and need to get a lot of other stuff before the really exotic stuff.
Great game. I finally beat it a few months ago and man did that feel like an accomplishment. Probably my third fav in the series despite the difficulty i had.
I heard G4 is coming back, you should definitely apply, with this channel as your resume u should be good. Maybe they'll even play ur content, they'll want to kill ur Sega lord intro, but I do think it's TV production quality. Love the quality of your content, keep up the good work.
Speaking of the X68000 you should try Cho Ren Sha 68k, a nice shmup for that computer that is also available for windows. Also a bit of trivia for another obscure (or really old) computer, Yuzo Koshiro has uploaded another version of The Revenge of Shinobi's OST using the PC-8801 sound chip, which sounds cleaner. Maybe he composed the music using that chip and then converted it for the Mega Drive's YM2612. /watch?v=6sx7_pyY6e0
Yep, Yuzo composed the music on the PC-8801 and then ported it to the MD. The thing is that both systems had similar sound chips (OPN Family) but the one in the NEC computer had proper PCM channels so the drums sound much more clean.
Man, I have lived with game Machines for so many years without having ever played a Castle Vania game, this branching out to make short shift and refined presentation of differences in many titles is in a way better than find a gold mine, just one more thing you did not seem to go into it and I must know, in Castlevania you have told us that, the you even have to loose the game several times to find you way around the levels and also that one needs to be willing and ready to explore hidden areas or mulitiple paths, that is now understood, but to play it on a desk top computer, what are the Controls like to navigate your way around the levels, does one use keyboard and mouse to play this give or are you using Those old "Joystick socketts?" the gaming looks more straight forward here than the Mega Drive and Saturn. The approach of how to get through the levels seem to be in a style liken to Zelda: A Link to the Past and a bit of Rygar in the blend, your new way of raise the bar of creativity in making episodes in new ways is really nice, this clip was short but you really know you way through games and it is compassionate gaming galore. Thank you
I think this is one of the better Castlevania games, especially arrange mode on the PS1 version for Simon's Design and Sota Fujimori's amazing arrangement. Seriously, his versions of Thrashard in the Cave and Moon Fight are simply amazing.
Interesting looking game, I had never even heard of it and I consider myself pretty well versed in the hobby. I've always thought the other 16-bit CV games were a bit on the easy side, I'll definitely give this a shot.
It's funny, when this was re-released on the PS1 at a budget price back in the day, nobody paid any attention to it because it wasn't a Metroidvania and came out after Symphony of the Night. Nowadays, Castlevania Chronicles is one of the most expensive US PS1 games. Great video, man. I always liked this one even if I didn't play this as much as the other games.
Being a hardcore Castlevania fan since the original NES release, I bought every release since then, including Chronicles. Actually, I bought 2 copies since it was a budget release.
Sega Lord X, PLEASE stop making awesome videos of awesome Castlevania titles!!! Now I want to go back and re play them ALL!!!!! JK Don't stop....EVER!!!! A+
I think this game had great graphics! Much better than the Super Nintendo Castlevania. Great use of color, and even some rotation effects. This game looks way better than I thought it would!
Hi, I was hoping you could review some/ give your opinions on some genesis games namely Phantom 2040, Ranger X,Ren & Stimpy: Stimpy's Invention, Soldiers of Fortune, and either Musha Aleste or Target Earth.
The PSOne version is probably expensive as IIRC, there were only 20,000 copies made. It was a big deal of sorts that it was a limited run. I snapped one up damn near on Day One and loved it. It was pretty cool in that if you were familiar with the traditional Castlevania, there were certain little sneaky changes that would catch you off guard, like expecting a steak dinner hidden in a wall and instead getting gang raped by a bunch of the little jumping dudes. :D Cool little 'Oh Shit!' moments throughout the game.
This version blows the nes version waaaayyyyy out of the water,, more levels, supirior graphics and sound. I wish this version also hitted the snes & sega genesis alongside their respective sequals of it. Why is it that those supirior versions of games hit the type of pc and being unformiliar & rare?? It’s just sooo frustrating to realize what we have missed out over all these years, all because the sega genesis & snes were just overuling the 16bit videogame market, and sadly 16bit pc’s couldn’t hold a candle in terms of gaming against those 2 big rivals,,ouch!!!!
Man, I’d love to have one of those X68000 twin machines. Being able to play this and all the other games plus the PC Engine library would be fantastic. It’s about as rare as gold turds from an albino field mouse.
sega lord x love your content i have two quick questions which emulator do you use to run these games on the sharp and also how are you changing the music types on the different games on the system?
i play this game,is really hard and it's really really fantastic game, gameplay was great, but bosses on first 5 level is really easy, but last 3 was very hard
I was wondering if you're going to cover this one! Hard as heck but still great. This is going to bother me until I figure it out, do you know where that music at the end of this video is from? I know I've heard it a hundred times and I just can't remember from where.
Cause the Genesis has the exact same Motorola 68K CPU, plus it has an additional Zilog Z80 Co-Processor and didn't have to deal with loading assets into ram (most everything was pulled from fast rom on the cart as opposed to loading/unloading per level like on a diskette based system). Also Konami used much more special hardware effects on the Yamaha VDP and additional software effect routines on the Genesis version...
Holy hell I bought Castlevania Chronicles out of the bargain bin at Fry's for $20 back in the day. Time to hit up Ebay because I still think the game is sealed (yeah I'm lame, I never got around to playing it).
This is not the hardest of the 16 bit Castlevanias by a long shot. I disagree with your opinion on its difficulty strongly I found both bloodlines and Dracula X to be much harder Dracula X had a lot more bullshit in it And bloodlines was a lot less forgiving with it's limited continues and the final boss that felt like it went on forever. At least in normal mode that is.
Oh man, I had so much more trouble with this than Bloodlines. Dracula X depends on which version you mean. I think the PC Engine game is challenging, but not nearly as tough. The SNES game isn't hard at all until you get to that completely BS Dracula fight where you get knocked into the holes. Worst Vania boss ever there.
I played it both through X68 emulation, and the PS1 release. Just wasn't very impressed with it. Not a technically flawed game or anything, just very "meh".
“Rare as rocking horse $hit” epic. Never heard that before.
I'm tempted to start calling him Sega X Lord, he certainly does have a way with words. Ahahahaha!

This is a great Castlevania game! I didn't know about it until I got Castlevania Chronicles back in the day.
Most people didn't. Hell, I think even today many have no clue what it is.
Fantastic game and graphically it has its moments with huge bosses like the dragon.
As for music, with the Roland option its simply outstanding.
That level 2 & 3 arranged music in Castlevania Chronicles is the best.
Love that you're covering content outside of the Sega systems now. As usual thanks for the great content.
Trying to expand the channel to grow a bit. I have some more changes coming I hope you guys like.
At this rate I'm now expecting videos of all Castlevania games by Sega Lord X
Loving it! Keep it up Sega Lord!!
@Mike Jones never!

X68000 emulation is easy these days. Try it there.
Holy cow, I just remembered I have Castlevania Chronicles. It's been a longgggg time ...
I remember playing this on an actual X68000 at Midwest Gaming Classic back in 2017. I was BLOWN AWAY by it. Too bad it's crazy expensive to come by.
A working X68000 and this game will run you close to $1000. It's crazy.

"Rare as rocking horse shit." Going to have to steal that one.
Love this game! I had purchased it back before it had hit gold status but no longer have it,wish I had held onto it.
Awesome game. I was lucky i was able to import the PS1 version as soon as it came out. Love it.

I love that intro

X68000 emulation has actually gotten pretty easy these days. You can give here a run there in its original form.

Sega Lord X, PLEASE stop making awesome videos of awesome Castlevania titles!!! Now I want to go back and re play them ALL!!!!! JK Don't stop....EVER!!!! A+
You should replay them all. Castlevania games are timeless gems of 2D glory.
What a cool, unknown CV game!
Could it be ported to a sega saturn version ?
Yeah this has got to be the hardest Castlevania game period. At least in OG mode. But still very good.
I love the word is a Greek word and it’s a very ancient!!!
I felt it fitting here.
Hard as balls. The moment I broke a wall searching for meat and was assaulted with endless fleamen I never turned it back on again... The betrayal.
That part gets everybody I think. Expecting a nice life recharge and then assaulted with pure death.
I think this game had great graphics! Much better than the Super Nintendo Castlevania. Great use of color, and even some rotation effects. This game looks way better than I thought it would!
This should be on the new PlayStation classic system.
I used to have this game on PS1, but some one stole the disc.. I still have the jewel case.

Reminds me of that boss in Ys one I never manage to defeat.. Might have to try that again..,
Ps: Tony’s chocolonely is also fantastic!
This game is on ps1 too. Castlevania chronicles
Love the castlevania reviews. Are you going to review castlevania rebirth on the wii?
I'm hoping to do them all eventually. Even the 3D ones.
Is this a port of the arcade game Haunted Castle (1988), or are they totally different?
That’s why I asked if it was a PORT
@@radracer8889 It's not a port of HC, it's an entirely different game.
SlyBeast thanks!
Yup, completely different game. Haunted Castle does have a physical release on the PS2 in Japan if you have interest in it.
@@SegaLordX Correct, I have this! I think it's called Oretachi Zoku Akumajo Dracula. Comes with a HC soundtrack CD. Pretty neat.

Interesting how it is the least impressive graphically, when the X68000 was more powerful than snes and genesis. Konami dropped the ball a bit here.
