He probably realized that screaming on a regular basis would ruin his voice. Which is probably why a lot of singers who started out screaming gradually taper off and stop screaming altogether (e.g., Rob Zombie, Corey Taylor etc.)
Sure, the effect of screaming your lungs out is impressive (Ticks and Leeches, anyone?), but that comes at a serious price (again, Ticks and Leeches: Maynard literally damaged his vocal chords recording that song and it took him weeks to recover.)
