  • When people first saw the trailer for John Wick, they might have thought it was just another revenge-based action movie, but the film actually went on to change action movies, albeit subtly. The genre was really struggling when the first Wick film came out, as the majority of big-budget action films of the day focused on explosions and effects instead of characters and choreography.
    Now, countless films are being compared to John Wick, and the film itself has spawned a successful franchise and given Keanu Reeves a much-needed career boost. Let’s take a look at the ways in which John Wick changed action movies.

      Looper John Wick is a legendary action movie, when you have other movies wanting to do the same thing as that movie has done, it means they respect the material and they want to have that winning edge, just like John Wick has and that is badass!

    You missed what I feel is the most significant change John Wick made to action movies -- his efficiency of style. No more pummeling a bad guy for ten minutes, exchanging witty one-liners. No more spinning around and showboating. Just dropping bad guys with a quick, ruthless effectiveness -- what a REAL professional killer would surely do!

      @pcbacklash_3261 5 лет назад +61

      Actually, while Bourne's fights are entertaining and exciting, they are the opposite of Wick's style. Wick engages just enough to take out (kill) targets, with minimal physical interaction. Bourne's object is NOT to kill, so he has extended fight scenes, including much physical interaction.

    • @PLGRN8R
      @PLGRN8R 5 лет назад +17

      @@pcbacklash_3261 To be fair, that's because Bourne is hoping to interrogate them in a few cases. Bourne also prefers fewer, more professional killers against one another rather than dozens of faceless bodyguards, resulting in fights that wax and wane in either direction before Bourne goes the extra mile and wins out. For examples of longer John Wick action scenes, see John Wick's standoffs with Perkins, Cassian, and his encounters with the various assassins of New York. Those fights were far faster than his fights with Perkins or Cassian, but they were also not even close to being his equal. Perkins had the advantage of surprise and a badly injured Wick, while Cassian could be argued to be within the same ball park as Wick, while still needing a lot of catching up to do to be a true equal.

      @valiantsfelinesmccarty6678 5 лет назад +11

      @@coffeedense same here I have a great deal of respect for him, compared to a lot of the other actors. He doesn't bring politics into his movies, he just does movies, he doesn't do them to tell us what to do, he doesn't get up and tweet that he's this, and he's that, & we need to do as he tweets unlike others. He's just a person, he keeps his life private, and he knows that what he does can affect what people do. So he's very careful about what he says and does. What I like is that he is a real person and that he doesn't use his notoriety or fame to try and make us do something.
      The only thing that he does is he does have charities, but he's so quiet about it that you don't know he has these charities. To me, he's like the old movie stars way back in the 30s and 40s who really didn't use their fame to get something and instead used it to help others. When he did the matrix at first, I didn't understand what was happening in it, but I have to admit it does have a cult following because of what it teaches, it teaches us to be very careful, not only about say, for instance, if we were attacked by aliens and whatever we would do, but also be careful about the world around us, what's real and what's not.
      Just the other day I was talking to my husband that there was a beautiful rendition of Simon & Garfunkel's "Hello darkness my old friend" by a little girl on RUclips, and it was very haunting. It struck me, it's here. Talking all the time, but saying nothing, on Twitter Snapchat, Facebook, Instagram. WhatsApp. Putting our lives out for all to see talking, but not really speaking. These neon gods, really scary, oh, my husband, just looked at me and said, I never thought of it that way. I'm sure that when they wrote the song, they were just writing something that came from the heart, not realising that in their life time, they would see us doing this. Did you know one of the Google creaters has a church that worships as its God, a computer! Why not, it's perfect, it wouldn't make a mistake. Well, yes, of course, it would, all computers are programmed by a human being, it only knows what the human being put into it, even AI is created by th,e intelligence of the man who programed it originally.

      CavemanJesus4Life that's why I said overuse... Bourne used it to heighten pace and the energy-- the cuts were deliberate, showing us what the director wanted...
      everyone else starting doing it to hide things, not show us things...
      much like post-matrix bullet time, which they still do now-- slow down and speed up time indiscriminately...

Dredd used it as a plot point and Tron used it to show more depth of feel in the cyber world (instead of objects moving towards you they move farther away). Because of watching John wick, I have high expectations on action movies. I generally don't like guns or violence, but the way the wick plays the character in gun fights is so cool especially how he unloads a spent cartridge and loads another one in one flick. I enjoyed the Jason Bourne trilogy but after watching this John wick franchise, I am blown away!! Just pure action, minimal CGI scenes ( if any), raw skill and no sex scene that disrupt the main story line.

He's tall for an actor, and in good shape. No one here has mentioned The Replacements, but it's one of my favorite Keanu movies. Yeah, he can play a washed-up QB, and you can believe he might have played football.

    • @MsSissiePooh
      @MsSissiePooh 5 лет назад

      No argument here. Keanu was able to take the ‘blank slate’ character of John Wick and give him a depth of emotion that we didn’t expect. He made the character believable, and took a plot premise which, on paper, seems kinda silly, and put so much sincerity and earnestness into the film, that we go along with the story, and it turns into an awesome thrill ride. So, I can’t wait to see what happens in John Wick 3.

    • @rbc13183

      Uh, no, the 80s and 90s was the era of the superhuman protagonist who kills armies of men (Arnold Schwarzenegger, Sylvester Stallone, Jason Statham, Wesley Snipes, Bruce Willis, Steven Seagal, etc. It's this era that the Expendables movies were making fun of, because it's ALL about the invincible protagonist) without barely taking a scratch. That stuff got toned down a long time ago. Hero's get banged up now, and almost killed, constantly in movies nowadays. People are acting like John Wick's movies is the first time that the protagonist gets his ass kicked. Hell, I'd argue that Wick's ability to survive the injuries he takes on is almost close to being on par with the whole "superhuman protagonist" genre that many claim Wick's movies depart from.

      This is the part that i dont agree with it did not start a revival of big scale action it had some but there was movies right before it with it and movies right after it with big scale action and movies that did not use it.
      Big hollywood movies after it did not follow it.

      I specifically refrained from writing influenced but rather went for revival since it's something it can accomplish on its own. @JJ_ExMachina 5 лет назад

      Jo Montanee ...A BETTER TOMORROW from 1986 has some awesome action scenes, but the gun fights in no way can be considered "Gun Fu"... It is just plan shooting, a bunch of bad gus with a bunch of guns... There is not artistry to it, no redirecting the a person fire, using the their body as a shield, setting up the person you are engaging to allow the next action to smoothly flow through to engage the next target... A BETTER TOMORROW is a great shoot um up older movie from the late 80s... but Equilibrium and John Wick's fighting style are on a whole different level.

    The best thing about John Wick is that there's no need for lengthy exposition. You're left to piece the world together, not to mention, you get a good idea of who and what John is with very little but legends told by terrified mob bosses.

    John Wick: no shaky cams, impressive gunplay, one-take fight scenes, actually RELOADS, no "hey look its him on the CCTV footage; enhance image" scenes, and just complete badassery at its finest.
    John Wick is one hell of an action movie.

      @Ghalnerac 5 лет назад +5

      actually, the gun-kata is a style to optimize the use of gun. There is no melee with that style and christian's character in that movie had to train himself in close combat style (with the katana). But John wick is mixing melee combat with the use of a gun. So where John Preston had 2 combat style (melee and gun-kata), John wick has only one (close combat gun style)

    What John Wick does so well is to show us information rather than explicitly telling us. We've heard characters foreshadow how much of a threat he is. John isn't your run-of-the-mill assassin, he's a force of nature that is best left undisturbed. Then when the audience sees John goes into action, it's jaw-dropping to see. The world building is amazing as well; there are numerous locations, and the criminal underworld is so beautifully crafted.
