£950 winter quarter gas bill received yesterday (100% + more than last year despite cutting back on heating). Only now starting to recover from the shock greatly aided by the exceptionally fine tones and playing of Dave . Thank you so much for cooling my fevered brow Dave. I will get by - but without the Tele I wanted. My sympathies to those less fortunate.
But at least we are making Russia suffer! Oh wait...nothing we have done has hurt them at all and they are winning the war hahahaha. What a fucking joke.
Great playing and great demo as always. I owned this set along with other EMG sets many years ago. Terrific set. I just made sure I could access the battery by the trem springs rather than having to get under the pickguard which is a pain in the ass. I've also used some stacked single coils, both Duncan and DiMarzio. Generally, I tend to like DiMarzio's stacked single coils more, but as far as Duncans go I think the STK 4 set is outstanding. Gilmour went back to passives about the time he recorded On an Island in 2006. He still gets a great tone. He's not using stacked Duncans but rather a Duncan SSL true single coil set. I don't know if he has a silent system installed in his passive strats. Gilmour has a great ear for tone so I'm always interested in how he achieves those tones. A very nice thing about the EMG set is due to its passive nature it achieves distortion through a built in preamp rather than from a hot, high output magnetic field. This allows for more clarity than you'd get with a high output passive single coil, including most stacked single coils. When it comes to stacked single coils I generally shy away from the hot ones as they lose single coil characteristics like quack on 2 an 4 and sweetness. A bridge that's hotter relative to middle and neck is fine, but you don't want something that sounds like a sledgehammer.
I became an EMG only user back in 1987 when I replaced the Washburn branded EMG non active humbucker in my 1986 Washburn RR11V with an EMG -H since then every guitar I have owned or built has had some form of active EMG in it, My current favorites are the Glenn Tipton Vengeance set I put into my home built "BRS" for GGBO 21. I then moved the Zakk Wylde set I had in it over to my newest GGBO 22 Thick Lzzy build. Battery life for me is at least a year and as much as two years on some. those with the active tone circuits will be much less but I would expect a good 6 + months I would think.
Awesome intro playing! I've had a set for years, and I love them. I recently matched the neck and middle with an EMG81TW in the bridge. Versatile tonal possibilities indeed. Great vid as always.
I had a Steinberger with emg pickups in the 80s and they were great for what I was doing....the lead guitarist in my band for a decade played a strat with lace sensor pickups and personally I loved them.....I took a bridge lace sensor and put it in the middle of my nashville tele and I loved it. I believe you can make almost any pickup sound good with a simple EQ pedal on your board. Lace sensors respond well to my GE7 Boss EQ box. I have traditional single coils in my strat though and the hum has never bothered me much..I've never felt the need to swap them out. Lace sensors biggest plus over emg's....no battery necessary
Hi Dave , I just came across this clip. Man you really nailed the Gilmour tone. That was outstanding and the lighting and smoke only added to it all. Just brilliant
Sounding amazing as alway Dave 👍🏼Love my DG20’s they sound so much better than my ssl- 5 and fat 50’s, I hardly use my black strat anymore because I prefer the EMG’s.
22:30 One of my more favorite modern guitarists, Mark Speer, of Khruangbin uses those DiMarzio Cruisers in the neck and bridge I believe on his strat. Love his tone. This video was a great demo Dave.
The Gilmour guitar in question was a candy apple red ‘82-‘84 vintage re-issue ‘57. The body cavities had to be routed lower to accommodate the emg’s & wiring. He also had the pickups as low as possible which apparently retained the ‘Strat’ like sound. Not sure but I think had a white one too.
I fully agree with you Dave about the pearloid scratchplate. It has ALWAYS baffled me why EMG sell this a 'complete' unit this way. As Dave says its just not 'Gilmourish' at all. I do have a set of these EMG and they're awesome. The battery, like Dave says, does tend to last quite a while. I will say though I do actually prefer the Gold Lace Sensors that I have in my Strat Pluses. But that's a purely personal thing of course. Great playing as always Dave!
Have a 94 Strat with stacked Gold, 2 Blue in the middle & 1 Red in the bridge. Can split or use as humbucker. Great Pickups & still my favorite Strat among the 3 I have.
Yeah I replaced the pickguard/scatchplate with a single ply white one when I got my EMG's. Not that I hate the pearloid, it's just that I needed the white for an accurate Red Strat replica.
After going through many Strat models and most of the CS line of pickups, boutique pickups I settled on two SRV models (thick Oval neck, once you go thick you can never go back), one with the DG20’s and the other with the Lace Sensor Gold and Clapton Midboost. YMMV on the ‘extras’ vs normal Strat wiring but for me those two guitars get me through any set and its really just a matter of which one I decide to grab. I doubt anyone in the audience is upset that Im not using some vintage stagger low wind cork sniffer stuff and Ill bet they are actually glad since I dont get all the noise and ice pick. YMMV but this is the stuff for me and it does Death Metal too if you are interested in that.
Kinell Dave..... Just got home after a long arduous day and watched your vid, thought I'd clicked on Mr. DG's channel by mistake........Sounding very sweet, hope the smoke clears soon!
I have emg sa's with midboost and normal tone control in my 1982 50's Fender JV strat. FIrst time i installed the pickups i was getting a lot of buzzing. Found out that the channels under the the pickups were too shallow. Had to buy a mount and wood cutting tool for a Dremel tool my dad had laying around. So I carefully cut the channels about 4mm deeper so the EMGs could fit. Sound amazing by the way.
Great playing! Love the sound of these! For anyone thinking of buying these, they do not perform like traditional single coils, so don't expect these to deliver that kind of tone. But in a PF/Gilmour setting they are amazing.
Love the intro. Gilmour Meets Jean Michel-Jarre! Hang on though, I thought you didn't like smoke machines? Considering dropping some EMGs into the Stingray bass I will be buying in the near future. Great pedigree. Enjoyed the review of these ones. Nice Strat too.
I had set of active EMG 80’s in the late 80’s in a strat .they sounded great but we were supporting the uk subs .and the bstard battery packed up .the beggar died there and then ..the battery was under the scratch plate so couldn’t swap it out .so had to borrow the subs guitarists guitar ..after that I hard tailed it and fitted the battery in the cut out where the trem springs live didn’t use a trem. that sorted that out ..in strats now I use Ironstones Alnico 5 classic single coils .I use a Gibson les Paul for the humbucker sound …I also found noiseless single coils soulless too .
Great intro Dave! Loved the lights and smoke machine. Nailed the pink Floyd vibe. Would love to see what you do if you ever review any Matt Bellamy gear. 😆 Fire and Aliens!!!
I was 'gifted' a set of these EMGs and fitted them to a 3-tone Sunburst partscaster build. They are extremely special. I have mine fitted in a BWB 3-ply scratchplate with the Bridge pup angled Hendrix style. I also installed a Battery Box in the guitar to make changing the battery easier. Next job is to scallop the fretboard and fit a Brass nut 🤘
Hi Dave - the EXG and SPC controls take a bit of getting used to. For sure they aren't traditional tone controls. The SPC (normal mid pickup tone socket on a strat) boosts the mids and sort of makes the rear pickup more humbucker in sound. It's really great. The EXG sort of anti scoops the mids and is also cool. Using them at higher values will exhaust the batter faster. I put my battery in the spring cavity. It did think about putting 18v thru them. The CMOS seems to imply it can take it - try at own risk. I love EMGs in my Jazz basses.
Fishman fluence are making trem covers for back of the guitar that has an integrated battery that you can charge via usb which sorts the guitar dying problem
There's several issues with this. For one, screw patterns on strat backplates vary wildly. Secondly the current draw with EMGs is ridiculously low, batteries last a year easily, my bass had a battery last 10 years. With the fact that the battery is probably only getting charged once a year in extreme cases, I'd be concerned about the battery degrading and becoming useless after only a handful of charge cycles. Which ties into my final point. Price is ridiculous considering the parts inside are probably only a few dollars worth. I was going to build my own take on Fishman's design, but ended up scrapping that idea because I realised it's pointless. I put an Energiser Ultimate Lithium 9v in instead. 10 year shelf life, 3x the capacity of a normal 9v. People worry too much about this. EMG are correct in saying that you don't need to remove strings to replace the battery, just take a few screws off, and bend up the pickguard. If it still bugs you. Just bridge the 9v connector inside the guitar, and power it with a stereo cable. You can get a basic pedal box for cheap, put a mono jack for the output, a stereo jack for the input, wire up a couple of 9v connectors inside, a switch to turn off the batteries, maybe even a switch to go from 9v to 18v and put that on your board. If you want to use a passive guitar, you just turn off the batteries. EMG sells such a device, but imo you can build one for a fraction of the cost. I was going to, but I decided it just wasn't necessary.
I’ve got a set of those, they are very good. Word of warning if you want a different pickguard you’ll need to buy the set not the loaded pickguard as the DG20 isn’t easily swapped to a new guard. Before you put the money into the SA set try the crossroads set, a little lower output, a little more organic, less mids but include the mid boost and you can get the SA sound pretty easily. I love both sets but I prefer the crossroads, they also look look like normal single coils pole pieces and all.
I found it OK to move the DG20 set to a different pick guard. I tested adding these pickups to the cheapest Harley Benton Strat - ST20 - and they sound awesome (video of process on my channel). Likely I will move them to my SX strat.
There’s definitely the SORROW sound in there 🎉. I hadnt picked up my guitar for about a year until today….my brain is slowly remembering how to play intro to COMING BACK TO LIFE.
They sound really good!. I might invest in a set after watching your video Dave. I love my fender vintage noiseless pickups but EMGs might replace them. I'll have to put the noiseless pickups in another Strat I have.
I put this set into a Squier 50's classic vibe. The Classic Vibe is well made for the price and the built-in PU was ok, with quite little output, as it was common in the 50s. Anyway, with the David Gilmour set the guitar sounds really good and like Pink Floyd ;-) I have bought a Fiesta Red one, because I saw David in a video with a red Strat :-) You have to get used to the sound shaping - I use it discreetly, then it brings some boost, which you can maybe use for a solo part. I rarely turn the boosters up to max, I think it's over the top then. Otherwise, I can confirm your impression and it really upgrades the Squier, at least as far as the electronics and the sound are concerned. By the way, I put the "Fender Pre-Wired ST Pickguard Hot N." in another Squier Classic Vibe 70's, which sounds fantastic!
I love em.. I got my first set after the first time i watched delicate sound of thunder vhs many years ago..i put them in an old vester strat i had at the time.. now I have aset in my classic vibe.. only I just purchased the normal set so I have the tone knob options.. great demo
Completely agree about the pearloid - it's an odd choice and the only thing that kept me from buying it when it was last on sale. EMG also have a nice white pre-loaded pickguard with their Retro Active Crossroads set - but I can't find any reviews, which is odd.
I have a set if these in a Player Strat. I also have similar in another Player Strat, except the SA single coils were replaced with SLV single coils, which are used in the SL20 loaded pickguard.
It sounds really good. I don’t like red anything but I do like a pearloid pick guard. I have one on my Reverend 6 Gun and I think it looks great. I’ve wondered about the Fender Lace pickups. If I ever change any pickups I’m going with the hand wound Seymour Duncan Hendrix reproductions. I’ll never be anywhere but playing in my living room but I’m interested in how things sound. Also a big fan of visual aesthetics because I graduated from an art academy 🎨. Thanks for the video and keep up the good work. 👍☮️🌞🎸🎵💖
I still have my 1st electric guitar (1983 Ibanez Roadstar II). I put the original EMG SA kit in there years ago. Sounds great. The Ibanez is all black. Matte black pickguard with black pickups. It's a good look for me. I never really liked the look of the all white lace sensors or the EMGs.
I made test on my channel. £72 HB strat (that was surprisingly good stock) then install a set of these EMGs. £249. It is a CAR maple neck - really decent tone but likely they will go into my SX - another cheap and awesome guitar.
Nice, I like EMGs. Would love to see what you would make of their retro active humbucker models, they are great pickups. I have a LP style guitar currently with an EMG mini humbucker in the neck and I get David Gilmour vibes from the sound of it. It's a nice fat single coil sound to have in a humbucker guitar. There's a good album by a band called Airbag that entirely uses the Gilmour EMGs I think, if anyone is craving some Floyd-esque rock. It's called All Rights Removed. Dave you might like them. The retro actives are in some of the nicer Harley Benton guitars, it's a shame Thomann did Dave wrong.
Bought these pups when they 1st debuted...😁👍 Has that tone that is on record. Always thought EMG must if had gotten a deal on ths pearloid pickguard...🤔 😎👍❤🖖
You've nailed the Gilmour sound. Exactly what pedals are you using to sound so 'Gilmourish'? I'm buying the EMG prewired setup, however. I'm also doing a custom Strat build and will be putting the pickguard in my 20 year bin for later use. I have no use for the pickguard as for now. I'll be making a custom pickguard to match the true character of my current build.
Wow that gave me chills.... Did well to not play the riffs we all know copyright strikes again pickups sound amazing but Yr playing is amazing as always dave👏

While the energy companies are making billions in extra profits.
But at least we are making Russia suffer! Oh wait...nothing we have done has hurt them at all and they are winning the war hahahaha. What a fucking joke.
Same here... its crazy
You might have a double hit this year, I got house insurance yesterday and it’s double what it was last year 😢, and I hunt for the best deals.
Great playing and great demo as always. I owned this set along with other EMG sets many years ago. Terrific set. You put it in the bridge of a Gilmore set? Did you just use an HSS pickguard? I want to do exactly this
@@shirtpants4203 Yes, just that, I installed a DPDT Switch to flip back and forth between the single coil and humbucking modes.
I understand the fine line you walk in your intro. You did well sr Dave.
its not easy to only play the notes previously undiscovered by Humans. getting harder all the time.
Dave! You sure nailed Gilmour’s playing style. Spot on Bro.
Love your style Dave! Thanks for sharing and keep them coming!
I had a Steinberger with emg pickups in the 80s and they were great for what I was doing....the lead guitarist in my band for a decade played a strat with lace sensor pickups and personally I loved them.....I took a bridge lace sensor and put it in the middle of my nashville tele and I loved it. I've got these EMG DG's in a partscaster plugged into a Fractal FM3 - and the world is my oyster, baby!
What an intro!!!! Sent me to a happy place!!! It's Dave Simpson Gilmour, LOL!!! Outstanding...blessings to you, friend! Love your channel!
Sounding amazing as alway Dave 👍🏼Love my DG20’s they sound so much better than my ssl- 5 and fat 50’s, I hardly use my black strat anymore because I prefer the EMG’s.
What makes you say that and what amp are you playing through? I'm hunting for pickups and Fat 50's, SSL's and EMG's are all in consideration.
They sound so good! Love your playing so much!!!!😊
EMG Gilmore set are great and the fishman fluence single widths are amazing sounding
Delightful intro Dave lad 👍 Awesome vid all round mate 😁🎸
14:18 that's where the active p/ups hit the mark for the Gilmour sustain
I also love how quiet that are at rest. No need to shield.
22:30 One of my more favorite modern guitarists, Mark Speer, of Khruangbin uses those DiMarzio Cruisers in the neck and bridge I believe on his strat. Love his tone. This video was a great demo Dave.
Dave doing a Mark Speer video would be dangerous levels of cool, awesome and style. I need it in my life.
@@TheAdventChronicles Oh , YES Please 🙏😎

All I can say is there marketing department is out of touch after all these years they should offer a plain pickguard
That was some great playing ohh yeah!!!
I absolutely love your videos! I'd love to see you do the EMG SLV set!!
Kinell Dave..... Just got home after a long arduous day and watched your vid, thought I'd clicked on Mr. DG's channel by mistake........Sounding very sweet, hope the smoke clears soon!
Hello dear Dave Gilmour Simpson I think you are One of The Last rockers with soul for me and play with feelings , cheers.
the sounds are so good,,
you are in the zone with that guitar and rig. 🤠
simply superb!
Wow., video just started and already awesome..
Great pickups, easy to install onto another guard as I agree, the pearloid not good.
Wow! great playing Dave loved it! Thank you, great sounding pick ups
You could play Pompei and Wembley with this rig. Awesome!
Bar the nut and the trem that guitar looks identical to my 97 Strat Plus. Great playing as always Dave!
I have emg sa's with midboost and normal tone control in my 1982 50's Fender JV strat. FIrst time i installed the pickups i was getting a lot of buzzing. Dave, thanks for the video here, You have the tools here, but you can play the Gilmore Parts, you are a Diamond my friend, Cousin Figel

Absolutely fantastic playing
The king dave os back.good to see you playing bro.👍👍👍🌹🎸🎸🙏🙏🔥🔥🔥🤟🤟🤟
Always incredible playing, Dave!!
A glimpse into the soul of Mr David Simpson in that intro piece. Cheers, Dave.
Got that set in my 1984 mij candy apple Red strat but the black pick guard one looks very nice and with a gilmour short trem arm
Great intro Dave! Loved the lights and smoke machine. Nailed the pink Floyd vibe. Would love to see what you do if you ever review any Matt Bellamy gear. 😆 Fire and Aliens!!!

whats the pickup height recommendation
Sounds great!
To each his own but for me Candy Apple red with a pearloid pick guard and a maple fret board is my absolute favorite combinations.
Even better with gold hardware
The intro was inspiring!
Oh yes. Yes thank you !!! More!!!
Gilmour and Dave Simpson - I'm in a good place !
Hi Dave - the EXG and SPC controls take a bit of getting used to. For sure they aren't traditional tone controls.

People worry too much about this. EMG are correct in saying that you don't need to remove strings to replace the battery, just take a few screws off, and bend up the pickguard.

I have always been repulsed by pearloid pick guards. Hideous things. Loved the psychedelic opening! I thought i was having flashbacks for a second.
Great job sounds exactly like him
They sound really good!. I might invest in a set after watching your video Dave. I love my fender vintage noiseless pickups but EMGs might replace them. I'll have to put the noiseless pickups in another Strat I have.
Hey Dave,
Consider trying the Dimarzio Area pickups. They are noiseless pickups, but not sterile at all!
Those pick ups sound good. I think I would need to get another Strat to fit them tho. Great video.
I highly recommend you get another strat! 💪
Very nice, indeed.

You should do a series on Gilmour
Ho this is fresh of the press. Hi Dave , my best buddy. Thank you 🙏

It sounded great man 🤘🌌🛸🎸🎛
I'd see the bass and treble boost working better for the neck pickup and the mid boost focusing the bridge pickup for leads
Interesting you can buy the pickups already fitted to the pick guard just ready to drop in. Maybe get anotehr Jet Strat and fit them!
Fantastic blues licks, DG style ❤
its so foggy I half expected to see scooby and the gang run into the Harlem Globetrotters or Sunny and Cher .... ZOINKS !
Does anybody actually like 'Mother of Toilet seat' pickguards
Does anybody care about the pickguard? Dave’s playing is amazing.
I like em
@@joshuataft5541 me too
They look eve better on a white strat
We called it crushed pearl back in the 70s.
Oh I'm affected by the flashy lights, but in a good way !
Live from Pompeii.
sounded gorgeous that intro, i bet those pickups cost more than my guitar ;-)
I made test on my channel. £72 HB strat (that was surprisingly good stock) then install a set of these EMGs. £249. It is a CAR maple neck - really decent tone but likely they will go into my SX - another cheap and awesome guitar.
Nice, nice, nice and nice... Now how do I fit them in my Cyclone... *thinks*
But I got to admit I wasnt sure which Dave was playing in the intro !
It IS epic!
Lovely Gilmorton gilmour jam :))
Man. My best friend was my grandfather. He used to call me pink floyd without knowing anything about them. This band means so much to me
Nice, I like EMGs.
The battery lasts for about 1 year with everyday playing. First time it died I thought that my amp broke cause I forgot about the battery...
Mental. Your abilities are insane. I wish I had .1% the talent. Thanks for this video, I’m jealous and in awe.
Lace sensor > DG EMGs. Amazing playing as always.
Bought these pups when they 1st debuted...😁👍
Has that tone that is on record.
Always thought EMG must if had gotten a deal on ths pearloid pickguard...🤔
😎👍❤🖖
Install ... moments later dial in Pulse tone. Annoy the neighbours.
Awsome as usual dave
You not set the smoke alarm off Dave with that intro 😂
WOA !
Nice...
Oh dear Dave Simpson I just finished building you the black stratocaster David gilmour tribute guitar watch your email
Sweet!!
I must be tired - my brain recognised that as Dave Simpson EMG pickup....
You've done the EMGs and the smoke machine so for your next video we demand you review giant mirror balls.
😃👍
👏👏👏👏👏
I used Headphones.
Awesome ,, fly ,,
Thx Dave ....
Pearloid pickguards only look cool when you can find one with just a hint of the guitars base color.
I’m using a tone city golden plexi and a marshall guvnor two plus.
@@thedavesimpson That's all?
Wow that gave me chills.... Did well to not play the riffs we all know copyright strikes again pickups sound amazing but Yr playing is amazing as always dave👏
