    Awesome, getting closer to having the confidence to give candle making a try. My sister and I have an antique booth, and we are just looking to add some home-poured candles to our space. Thank you so much for sharing all your knowledge!

    I’m shocked how little people do testing. I tested for almost a year. I spent 4 months just learning candlemaking and then I started testing waxes, wicks and FO combinations. 8 of those months was serious testing.

      It will all come out in the wash, I firmly believe. If the rush to get out there is that intense, the fire (drive) will burn out likely just as quick. It’s a long game.

      I am a soapmaker and people do the same thing with making soap. They make a few batches and then decide to start selling. I started making soap in the spring of 2001 and never sold any until Thanksgiving weekend 2002. I am going to learn to make candles and I fully expect to practice for a very long time. But thenI am not looking to sell them, just make them for myself and gifts.

      Yes I do when I noticed it's pretty hot. The rule of thumb is nothing over 175

    I am a new candle maker and wow i am learning so much... i like wooden wick... and learned you have to soak them in olive oil... then when ready pour your wax over it and coat it with fragrance oil... but why do you coat it with fragrance oil?? Also i have worked on my wax... i use palm oil shortening and soy wax.... i like softer wax not hard or caky..

    • @UpsideGoodsCo
      @UpsideGoodsCo  2 года назад +1

      Eek, this is where I would disagree. I have yet to pre-soak a single wooden wick. not to discredit who told you that but I think you have to test and try a lot of different ways to find what feels right and works for you. That seems like a LOT of extra work and I'm not really sure what for?

    Hi Ashley! I am just getting into candle-making (well actually been looking at it now since about March) and I LOVE your videos. They have been so helpful in preparing to really dive in. I assume you place your original wick with a wick clip so it doesn't move. So do you just have to shove the new (or non-boosted) wick back in pretty hard to get it to go back in the clip?

    • @UpsideGoodsCo
      @UpsideGoodsCo  Год назад +1

      Hey! Great question! Yes, once the candle is solid again, I wiggle the existing wick out with some pliers and then the new wick just goes back in it's place, you can gently slide it in and feel it go right back into the clip! Voila!

    Ashley, I’m not quite understanding how you soak the new wick exactly. You said to soak it in the melt pool of the candle you’re rewicking but how? Shove it down next to the wick already in there?

    • @UpsideGoodsCo
      @UpsideGoodsCo  2 года назад

      I literally just dunk them in the melt pool. Usually on their side and a lil awkward but it gets the job done. Then I extinguish, let it harder and slide one out and the other in!

    Hi Ashley, thanks so much for this video. We are using the Aura wick as well but find the .03 booster isn’t giving a full melt pool. Could it be the oils? We use a plethora of FO.

    • @UpsideGoodsCo
      @UpsideGoodsCo  2 года назад +1

      It could be the oils or that the wax just isn't digging it. What else have you tested?

    • @Theunlikelycrafter
      @Theunlikelycrafter 2 года назад

      We are using soy so after looking at the wooden wick recommendations we really should be using the .04….I think 😊🤷‍♂️

    And with the aura what size of cotton wicks do you use, if ever, with EC26? I love this wax but struggle with wicking it. And are you using the regular EC26 or WW’s new knock off?

    • @UpsideGoodsCo
      @UpsideGoodsCo  2 года назад

      I do not use cotton wicks so I can't answer your question and I only use the EC26 wax.

    Also, do you get some discoloration of your wax using a wooden wick? I find it becomes more yellow. Do you stay below 10% fragrance load? WW FOs cost a pretty penny…

    • @UpsideGoodsCo
      @UpsideGoodsCo  2 года назад

      Some have a little discoloration to begin with but I don't have any that come across yellow. Off white would be more of the hue I see.

      Hey there! Thanks for watching. I would be the worst person to tell you my advice on that as I've never worked with that wax. My suggestion to to research the wax and find a wick guide from the supplier you purchase it from and start from there. Testing is going to be your best answer! Good luck

    You trim wooden wick before and after each burn ?

  • @WoodWitchApothecary
    @WoodWitchApothecary 2 года назад

    Wait, that much melt pool by 1.5 hours? Is that not too fast for an aura? I gave up on my wooden wicks thinking that they were burning way too quickly if I was getting a full melt pool in less than 3-4 hours.

    • @UpsideGoodsCo
      @UpsideGoodsCo  2 года назад +2

      It works for me. Here's why... I use EC 26 which no matter what is a slow burning wax. I don't mind a melt pool at 1.5 hours because the throw works well when it's burning at that rate. The life of the candle still lasts for about 85-95 hours at this rate. I NEVER promote anything that I do as a rule of thumb, only what works for me! I hope this helps!

    Hi Ashley, I’m so glad I found you…you’re knowledge is soo helpful on all fronts of the business. I’ve been testing my soy/coconut wax formula (unscented) with wood wicks and prime them as well before testing, but I’m noticing white vapors (like steam) that come from wax or near flame. I heard you say no white or black smoke in your video coming from the wicks. Can you please elaborate on the white smoke…I’ve searched everywhere and am getting zero info on what these white vapors are. I’m assuming it must be white smoke? Thank you!

    • @UpsideGoodsCo
      @UpsideGoodsCo  2 года назад +1

      White vapors are totally fine. Usually thats just oil burning off but in a way thats not too hot, thats when the black smoke comes into play. Every once in a while my candles have white smoke and It doesn't deter me, I just prefer no smoke at all when possible. I hope this helps!
