In 1924, Hidesaburō Ueno, a professor in the agriculture department at the University of Tokyo, took Hachikō, a golden brown Akita, as a pet. During his owner's life, Hachikō greeted him at the end of each day at the nearby Shibuya Station. The pair continued their daily routine until May 1925, when Professor Ueno did not return. The professor had suffered a cerebral hemorrhage and died, never returning to the train station where Hachikō was waiting. Each day for the next nine years, nine months and fifteen days, Hachikō awaited Ueno's return, appearing precisely when the train was due at the station.
Hachikō attracted the attention of other commuters. Many of the people who frequented the Shibuya train station had seen Hachikō and Professor Ueno together each day. Initial reactions from the people, especially from those working at the station, were not necessarily friendly. However, after the first appearance of the article about him on October 4, 1932 in Asahi Shimbun, people started to bring Hachikō treats and food to nourish him during his wait.
Hachikō died on March 8, 1935
Eventually, Hachikō's legendary faithfulness became a national symbol of loyalty, particularly to the person and institution of the Emperor.
Today, a bronze statue of Hachiko sits in his waiting spot outside the Shibuya railroad station.

I can't imagine the wondering and loss this loving dog endured for all those years he waited hoping to see his beloved friend come through the station doors. This is beyond unconditional love. I tear up now just as I did watching the movie.

I saw the movie based on Hachiko, with Richard Gere, I cried so hard that my face hurt. This was a beautiful dog, with unwavering love and loyalty for his human. I will never forget this story.

Oh Gloria, what a beautiful and heartbreaking video! The tears fell as Hachiko waited at the train station for his master. The undying and unconditional love we receive from our animal companions is some of the most pure love that any of us will ever feel. The music is so painfully beautiful and melancholy. The picture near the end of the "real" Hachiko on his deathbed, then the picture of him alongside his master in life (Professor Hidesuburo Uemo) was just the perfect way to wrap up this wonderful and emotional video. May they both rest in peace and blissfully together again now. Gosh, I need tissues! Thanks Gloria, ~Jackie

MY GOD! i could never bear the heart to see this film ever again, u can name the worst horror or gore movies out there i wil sit through them without so much as a shiver, but never will i hv the guts to see this film again, I've never cried so much for a film, even though i know the dog in the film & actors are all fine, maybe it's the fact that this is a true story, I don't know but it just pierces me like a sharp red hot blade goes through butter, such love & loyalty is only in legend rarely real, more so with people.

I went thru fire with my love my dog we survived got out i went to burn unit she was foster temporarily and next year heart attack i fought both times to come back to her she is the most loyal and my best friend every step i took was to come back to her our hearts are tied forever now she is nearly 12.I cannot leave her!
