Kyle Kuzma - Sky Hooks, Jump Hooks, and Push Shots

- Kyle Kuzma finished second among all rookies in scoring (ahead of Rookie of the Year winner Ben Simmons, Chicago’s Lauri Markkanen and Dallas’ Dennis Smith Jr, and the Boston Celtic standout Jayson Tatum). His 16.1 points per game had him behind only Utah’s Donovan Mitchell (20.5 ppg). He also finished second to Mitchell for total 3 pointers made, finished fourth among all rookies in total rebounds, and ended up second to Simmons in rookie double-doubles (although it should be noted that Ben finished with 38, to Kuz’s 17). In December, Kyle became the first Lakers rookie since Jerry West to have scored 25+ points in three straight games. He actually averaged 25.4 points per game through 7 games (with that stretch falling directly in the middle). Anyway, that is to say that when he was drafted 27th by Los Angeles, he was widely expected to be a project and to bounce back and forth between the G-League and the end of the Lakers’ rotation. Of course, we all know that he defied expectations and maximized his 3 years playing under Larry Krystkowiak (a 9 year NBA veteran and a former NBA coach) at the University of Utah and came in ready to contribute right away.
One of the things that first stood out to me about Kyle Kuzma is his polish for a rookie. Yes, he stayed in school longer than most people in his class (besides Kuz, only Donovan Mitchell stayed longer than one year in college and finished on the NBA All-Rookie team), but that really allowed him to shine sooner. He plays bigger than his 6’9” frame, and he does with particular power in the post. He’s got a great series of post moves (nothing earth shattering, but very solid), and that’s buoyed by his fundamental footwork. The other thing that caught my attention? His SKY hook. You read that right. The Kareem Abdul-Jabbar style sky hook, and it’s not like he only did it one time, he’s used it in a number of games this season. When he was on Kevin Garnett’s Area 21, he said that he’s had that move since high school, but it’s a great move no matter your level. Besides that, I figured that I’d pad the video a little bit with a couple more of his jump hooks, and because sometimes people classify things a little differently, I also thought to include a couple of push shots. Some may call some of these floaters, some floater hooks (a hybrid), but whatever you may call the moves on the back end of this video, it’s effective and shows that Kuzma really works on his finishing and his touch.
www.basketball...
That's still more like a running hook than a sky hook, but the touch he's got on that shot is still impressive
he adapted it . it's still a sky hook
@@dark3rthanshadows it's not a sky hook; even ignoring the 2 steps that running hooks have, kareem's sky hook was known as being shot from his wrist only; there's a significant pause after kareem brings the ball up high with his right arm, and then his arm barely moves as he flicks the ball with his wrist. That's why some players like Dirk say it's the hardest shot to master.
Everybody else who tries to shoot a skyhook uses their arms a lot more to proper the shot.
@@ReCharredSigh Kuzma used his wrist too.
You ain’t kareem baby
@@ReCharredSigh i feel like for kuzas size it could technically could as a sky hook but not a proper one, i think he will soon master it tho
He has stopped using the move. These days everyone is so enamored with the three point shot 😢
Fr. I was really glad to see it used again on the court.
He needs to practice on this more, he’d be hard to guard especially with his athleticism at PF and he can be versatile and stretch the floor
and He didn’t
I always said that
This is not a Skyhook, this is a running hook, and sometimes he does a babyhook, but it's still amazing
How?
Old school meets the new school! Fundamentally sound and aesthetically pleasing.
*Kareen Kuzma*
Kuzma need to watch this video to know how effective this shot is. Look at the space it creates. With his athleticism, hes gonna be unguardable with this move. Just need to practice this regularly.
fax
1:05 euro + sky hook wow.. even if its not the perfect sky hook.. but wow.. surely these technique of Karim abdul jabhar is ahead of time back in the days
It’s good to see any hook shot these days.
1980s style of b-ball... still effective in today’s era
You can yell at me if you want but I feel like 80s and 90s NBA was better than today's.
Fi txt hsggxfig Fffjyfdyhgsjgdyxzshjfdn more tougher of course
@@fitxthsggxfigfffjyfdyhgsjg210
Wym, it was tougher but today's nba can shoot MUCH better and shoot jumpers MUCH better and bas MUCH better handles
LMFAO of course, no doubt, it's extremely obvious. But, that's not even the proper way of doing the skyhook, the proper way would dominate even more today.
@@fitxthsggxfigfffjyfdyhgsjg210 I'd say the early 2000s late 90s was the best
too bad he's not using it anymore
What's impressive about it is he can do it with either hand.
I love this kid!!! He's doing that to honor Kareem. Please make him a Laker for life!
this didnt age well lmao
Welp
@@Requix4 I was good while it lasted. Still a fan.
3:00 super unselfish moment from Lonzo👏🏽💪🏽
I gotta say kuzma sky hook is pretty sweet
hook shot.kareem abdul jabbar and Now Kuzma showtime lakers is back.🏆🏆🏆🏆🏆🏀🏀🏀🏀🏀
lol i thought i was the only one who's using that. that shit easy money all day.
Lol fr
Fact
Bro...that's the only shot I have.
same i used that too unblockable shot
I love doing this move
We should all write a letter to him convincing him to bring it back.
Great to see that in more current nba the sky hook is still used
Running hook shots look so amazing
That’s his official signature move
KYLE LOWRY!!! PASSING !!!
Seeing these highlights completely justifies my being happy he got a ring before LeBron had him traded
Hitting them boys with the skyhook fr!!!
Shout out to Kuzma...💯💯💯
A dangerous laker weapon
This is the Kuzma we needed more of during the 2020 - 2021 season, a more up close player going for drives and not 3 pointers
Old school....I love it.
Can’t believe kuzma used to get 25+ ppg using this
Hes so much fun to watch!! Especially him trying to add a Lakers Mt. rushmore Kareem signature to
His game!!
aesthetic move
Great video idea
I never see Kyle Kuzma in the paint anymore 😔
Look's more like a Magic Johnson skyhook than a Kareem skyhook to me.
But now it seems he does that a lot less
This makes my heart happy ❤️
This guy is a walking talent
*BEAUTIFUL*
Smooth move
I don’t know why more people don’t use it. It’s damn near indefensible, and you don’t get beat up every play.
Fax I’m like 5’6 and I be using it on tall players. It really is unstoppable
@@Aaron-ix8zh Saves a lot of abuse inside, too!
@@Aaron-ix8zh stop the 🧢
@@mekayaka ig you gotta see it to believe it lmaoo you’d be surprised
@@Aaron-ix8zh post it then lol
U cant block that shot lebron needs to add this at the end of his career its basically unstoppable
If he could lock that move down pat- he'd be a great 6th man or 3rd best player on this lakers team.... He just needs consistency because he can be a beast when he locked in.
Too bad he’s obsessed with the 3 point shot now :(
The reason none of these will ever be significant to Kareem’s is becuase of the way they hook it in, they use their arms to put the ball in, Kareem uses is Wrist mainly
you put the hookshot on a much faster and athletic player like kuzma,...simple unstoppable....
That's why I want Giannis to use it more often
lets go my man kuz
People use this move all day on street ball nice to see it used in a pro game.
Finally someone resurrect the hook shot!
It’s such an awkward looking technique. He gets a little space with no contact and starts the form after he leaves his feet, impressive body control.
Kyreem Abdul Kuzma
Kyle "Kareem" Kuzma
Gonna use that move now coz of torn acl
wth happened?
This looks a lot like Wilt Chamberlin's moves , except Wilt's feet would be four feet off the floor .
Finally! Someone brings back the deadliest signature move in nba's history
It’s gone now
he can do it with either hand
kareem watching this : 👁️👄👁️
So much wasted potential Kuz...
So it only took 30 years for a professional basketball player to look at old films and see that a sky hook and running hook are almost impossible to block. ABOUT TIME. You can see me shoot my hook shot at larry w top of key hook shot.
because you pull that shit in high school and your own team gonna beat your ass.
Tim Lance 😂
People give flack about Dwight not having post moves he actually used the jump hook alot lol . But kuzma is mastering it . He mastering floaters
People wanna shot 3s, playing in the post isn't as fun anymore. Kuzma is smart for adding to his bag, but he should get lessons by Kareem to evolve it more.
Imagine giannis using this
Please don’t compare this to the skyhook, it’s just disrespectful
Its like a ghetto version of it
Wtf you mean Kareem abdul-jabbar was happy when he saw this
Not disrespectful nor ghetto
Drummond- Rebounding
My friends be getting pissed at me cause they play tough D and I’m 5’6 and be hitting them with sky hooks 💀
the first 5 or so in the video are true skyhooks
the following 1m30 seconds of footage are not really hooks in my book
not done with a straight arm and a pure wrist motion... they look like any other wide styled layup
yeah... it's hook, but not skyhook, real skyhook come from a giant
Where is this Kuzma now?
Lakers.
@@ethanhickman2437 Haha
Kareem dont swing his arm,but almost look like sky hook, closest to kareem hook
If LeBron could learn this move over the off-season and be effective at it, he could probably play until age 45. Lol
Now that he has gotten away from Lebron, he'll become a better player.
Kareem who?
LMAO "The sweeper" LMFAO announcer has 0 clue what the move is called.
sweeper 🤣🤣
That is not SKY HOOK its hook shot only ....
K.A.J 2.0 🔥🔥🔥
Lol... I swear, I thought this move was extinct
What happened to him now? 🤣
Where is that Steph superb separation
I'll tell you what my grandmother used to tell me: it'll be ready when it's ready.
sorry, had to do it, first
Push shot is a shot from your chest
