"The Skylark" is the 10th of 12 songs in a song cycle titled "A Farewell to St. Petersburg" composed by Mikhail Glinka. This piece was composed during a time of turmoil in his personal life due to poor health, an unfaithful wife, and little recognition for his work. The song was transcribed for piano by Balakirev who had a deep admiration for Glinka. Below is a translation of the lyrics from the original song.
Between the sky and the earth a song is heard
An unending stream of sound pours louder, louder.
Unseen is the singer in the field where sings so loudly
Above his mate the sonorous skylark.
The wind carries the song, to whom, it does not know.
She to whom it is sung, she will understand who it is from.
Pour on, my song of sweet hope
Someone remembers me and sighs furtively.
