Hi Dr Novak. Thank you for sharing these inspiring pictures. Ricardo's goldfish tank is amazing and with beautiful fish. It is inspiring to watch all these success stories & to get ideas how different people all over the world set up their aquariums. 👍
Hi Dr. Knovack. I first wanted to say thank you for all the Plenum videos. I have become a Plenum feen. All 4 my tanks from 15 gal to 135 gal are plenum tanks. When I knew I was going to make them, I didn't want to purchase UG filters for all of them, so I made my own. I use light defuser (small grated plastic) from Lowes. Cut it to the size of bottom of the tank, then zip tie the plastic can vas, (from Joann's or Amazon) to the top of the light defuser to 1/4" over the edges. Then make a hole for the up tube, which is made in a "L" shape so as to reach under the Plemun. This is all set on top of a layer of lava rock to hold it off the bottom. Fold the canvas down around the edges to keep substrate from getting under. Plants and fish are all doing great, of course with cat litter or safe-T-sorb, and florite red for substrates. Thanks again!
Dr Novak - thanks for showing my 10 gallon and 50 gallon tank. Yes, I bought the Repti Zoo hangers off Amazon. I will send you a picture of them on email. BTW the angels are scalare (not altum) that I bought from a local fish store (not a big chain store)
I just recently got the Oase BioMaster 850 Thermo which I'll be putting on my 75G to replace the Rena FilStar XP3. Nice thing is you can run it with or without the heater. Pull the heater out and put the cap on to run without.
I find the air pump made the most noise. To silence your air pump you suspend it in a glass. I used a thick glass rose vase. Put duct tape across the top. Then suspend the air pump in the middle, then close the top with layers of duct tape. I place this inside a basket lined with felt and put a plant on top of the tape top. It makes NO noise.
There used to be an air pump a long time ago, called Silent Giant what is the quietest air pump you could buy. That air pump was suspended, the air pump mechanism was in a can then the can was placed into a container full of gravel.
I already have a tank set up can I take my fish and some water out and set this up and run an on the back filter at the same time for a few months to be sure they have thier bio until it establishes. I got the under gravel filter the sand and kitty litter and the laterite. Do I have to use a screen?
That 50 gallon is pretty incredible! Although I'm using your suggestion of diluting my fertilizer into a spray bottle, I really need to find your video in making iron solution for spray bottle. Do you believe I should use separate bottle for iron or mix with my easy green fertilizer? I'd you have the time, can you link that video to this comment? Getting great enjoyment out of this series of videos for others using bcb and/or plenum filters. I did send mine in to your email as I'm assuming hundreds of your fans have. Thanks for such a great channel! Wish you continued success and expansion within the hobby. You've definitely created some true believers in a better method.
Iron is really the most important element plants need and mixing it in a spray bottle could help but that would all depend on. If you're using CO2, how much lighting you're using and there's a lot of variables.
I just got an inline Co2 diffuser with the ceramic stone in it. Just had an idea of getting another one and just take out the ceramic stone in it and hook up my slow moving plenum to the input of the canister filter. You would get a very slow suction with that airline hosing. Perhaps too little?
Just an update on my comment if anybody wants to get rid of their bubbler without too much modification. Went ahead and connected an inline CO2 diffuser (ceramic stone removed) to the input of the canister filter. Removed air stone from the plenum and stuffed filter floss in the little uplift tube around the air line hosing for a snug fit. I measured the water flow through the tubing and it comes to 40 litres per hour (10,6 gallons) I have a 55 gallon tank with 3 inches of Tropica soil powder, Oil-Dri and Laterite. Eheim 5e 700 canister filter with modified baskets to fit a BCB bag along with carbon, resin and sponges. I'm very pleased with everything so far.
I, as a rule of thumb have always stuck, stuck to the 3 to 5 inches. But that does not mean I have not had my substrate higher in the back by at least 6 inches or more, and still had success.
Hi dr novak iv been running a slow moving plenem for almost a year with great results no nitrate no algae untill now my vallis is starting to get hair algae at the tips iv no idea why as iv never had algae befor any ideas theres not been any changes at i know off maybe my tap waters got something in it what do u think id be greatfull for ur input
Sorry by my ignorance 😢 , but what is this filter or bubble motor in the corner ? How I install this machine ? Where I can buy this machine ? Is a filter ? (Corner) what is that ?(corner ) and how I install in my aquarium ? (Corner) Minute 3:20 Minute : 8:58 What is that ? Where I can buy ? I never see this before , is a air machine ?
@@anoxicfiltrationplenums Do you have a video to give an example on how you would set up one? I have a lot of ideas running through my head on what to try. I'm just wanting your more experienced thoughts just to jump start my decisions! Thank you!
What is the recommendation about the thickness of the substrate above the plenum? And the thickness of the baked clay layer? Also, Does it matter whether the lift tube has active movement of water through it via bubbles?can it be passive? ( U mentioned jaubert plenum, which is kind of a passive lift tube) Does it work the same?
The thickness of the Plenum can be anywhere between 3 to 5 inches. Do you need to have bubbles going through the up lift tube? The answer to that is not really all you'll be using then is the Jaubert way of doing it.
Showing aquariums of everyday aquarists can speak a thousand words. Lots of good ideas that work!
So true!

The road to necessity is paved by innovation.
2 of my 60cm long tanks have seedling trays cut down as the plenum, quite useful for little tanks.
Good tip!

Nice looking tanks! I can't wait until I can upgrade to a 55 gallon. That's when I'll implement the Anoxic system.
I would go for a 75 instead.
Exactly go to 75 gallon I just bought a 55 and realized it a bit small 🤷✌️🇨🇦

Can i make a plenum outside my main tank? that is connected via a pump (like a sump almost)

Hey sir, I have used CatSan Cat Litter in Uk. But still my filter is not mature. Do you thing this cat litter is not for anoxic filter?
Just a thought, can you make your plenum to tall? Instead of 1 inch, say 2 inches? Then your substrate.
I, as a rule of thumb have always stuck, stuck to the 3 to 5 inches. But that does not mean I have not had my substrate higher in the back by at least 6 inches or more, and still had success.
