D&D Ambience - [CoS] - Death House

  • Death House is the name given to an old row house in the village of Barovia. The house has been burned to the ground many times, only to rise from the ashes time and again-by its own will or that of Strahd. Locals give the building a wide berth for fear of antagonising the evil spirits believed to haunt it.

    Wow, I was actually specifically lookin for ambience for Death House cause my players are about to get to the third floor when everything gets a little weird, and you just hooked me up

    I'm running a haunted house one-shot tomorrow for my birthday, and I've been scouring YT for good ambient noise tracks to use for it. Most of what I've found is either so comically over-the-top or so quiet that you can't hear what's supposed to be creepy. This one, however, is absolutely perfect. It's subtle, but not *too* subtle.

    Apply spirit oil to your silver weapons and candles immediately. The medallion in my heart is vibrating slowly, but intensely.

    I'm soooo gonna use this in my game. I'm making a Christmas themed session so i'll have them hunt down Krampus in his lair, a dilapidated manor. This fits so well.

    The cloudy night is near freezing and moonless and the area around the manor has a thicker concentration of fog than most other Bavarian locations. Wooden spoons, wooden talismans, bone talismans and sinister rag dolls hang from twine in the bare tree branches, which sway in the cold gusts, which carry disembodied wailing. Zombies, skeletons, shades, foglets, armored flesh golems, vampire spawn, hyms and even sorrowsworn roam the area, but are vanquished by our silver weapons, which have been coated with argentia oil, and our cantrips such as burning hand, mage hand, ray of frost, acid splash, and eldrich blast as well as our incendiary, high explosive, freeze, and acid bombs. The flesh golems are 12 feet tall and weighs over 1200 pounds without their plate armor, which is 3 inches thick.
    After collecting monster parts and some heavily rusted metal parts from our enemies, my half elf companion and I enter the manor in order to rest for a few hours. Even with our potions, the battle wore us out and so my companion and I light an oil lamp that is dripless, filled with spirit oil and placed in a fireplace in the eastern wall of the first floor, opposite of the staircase. Over the lamp, we brew soup, beverages, potions, combat oils, bombs, and monster oils. My companion sleeps for 6 hours on her bedroll after falling asleep in my arms while I draft our combat report on a wax tablet before writing them on linen paper with a fine nib quill pen. After she wakes, my companion and I explore the rest of the manor with our lamp and shortswords. We salvage various miscellaneous items that we can trade or reuse, but we find various journal entries in the rooms and studies of Gustav and Elizabeth Durst and learn that a travelling mirror merchant made Gustav wealthy, famous and influential at the cost of his soul, which led to many long and endless nights of debauchery in the manor.
    Rumor has it that nightwalkers roam the remote edges of Barovia; so we should be on our guard although they are most likely in the deepest parts of the forests, far from interactions from humanoids. In the attic, we find the skeletons and spirits of the Durst children, who died of neglect after being imprisoned in their room. As the children are good aligned like us, they are mostly unaffected by the spirit oil, which would act as a repellent if their alignment was opposite of ours. In fact, they find the smell to be pleasant as we add some floral oils to the lamp. The children's ghosts play with us for hours as we share our stories and intentions and they decide to join us as foster children or younger siblings more than as familiars since we gave them more affection in a few hours than their parents ever did. Perhaps we can teach them to possess dolls and mannequins so that they can interact with physical objects such as their toys, which we bring with us. This moment of compassion brings me some much needed happiness amid a long life of conflict.

    I'm running a short (for now) camp where the players don't know who they are, what they are, and wake up unable to feel their own bodies. I call it "Keine Hände: Broken Things Ch. 1". I feel like if the first and second sessions go well, I'll continue working on more chapters. But this is EXACTLY what I was looking for! Thanks, Sword Coast!

      @@BluefrostOfSageclan I got my idea from a writing prompt! I thought it was super neat and ran with it. Lol Took me about a year to write most of the camp, but it was totally worth it. Little twists and turns and nothing is as it seems!

    This is sufficiently creepy. I believe it could also adequately convey a feeling of abandonment in a mine.

      That honestly brought back memories of playing Thief Gold and doing the prison break mission where Garret has to go thru a haunted mine underneath the prison where his fence is being held at. Hated those zombies so much. Especially trying so hard to sneak past them super slowly as to not wake them...

    Makes me imagine the Blair witch alone in the pitch-black darkness of the ruins of Rustin Parr's house just listening to the sounds of the forest around her as the bodies of Heather and Mike lie still and silent around her with what is left of Josh somewhere out there with his bloodied mouth cracked open in a silent scream

    How about the sounds of a slave galley? With the drums and the slave driver yelling and whipping and the slaves rowing with chains rattling and the ocean outside? That would be epic!

    Would it be possible for you to do soundscapes for games other than D&D, such as Warhammer 40k? I only ask because you are extremely talented and I have no idea how to do this kind of thing?

      Kad Gaming thats certainly something I could put together, although it would take a while to put together the right weapon sounds. I might do a special 40k series in the future, but it would be when I have time to compile everything I need. Great idea though.

    The time on this track says 2:55:10, but when I add it to a playlist, it says 3:00:11, why is that?

      It was originally uploaded at 3hr, but then I tripped it within RUclips’s video editor to be 2:55 so it would work in discord. The playlist time is probably some leftover metadata in RUclips’s systems.

      Not sure I’m afraid. The track should load in on its own, but it seems not in a playlist.
      RUclips don’t tend to fix issues like that unless it affects adverts 🤷‍♂️
