This year's lecture will be delivered by the Honorable Mark Leno, former Supervisor of the City and County of San Francisco and former State Assemblyman and Senator. Leno was a close friend of Baum’s and remains close to Holgate. His life in service, first as a community volunteer and then as an elected official, is an exemplary model for all of us.
USF Provost Chinyere Oparah will share some remarks and former San Francisco Mayor Art Agnos will introduce the Honorable Mark Leno.
This annual lecture preserves the legacy of Alvin H. Baum, Jr. (1930-2021), a monumental Bay Area figure who fought passionately for the inclusion of LGBTQ+ people in the Jewish community and beyond. A lawyer, urban planner, social worker, and strategic philanthropist, Baum was a pillar in the Jewish, civil rights, and gay communities.
This lecture series also honors Rabbi Camille Shira Angel, the first LGBTQ+ rabbi-in-residence at a Catholic university in the United States. Rabbi Angel provided significant pastoral support to Baum and the late Cheryl Lazar. Their spouses, Robert Holgate and Pam David, have helped organize this lecture series in honor of their beloveds and the rabbi.
This is a video of the pre-event reception.
