@@baileyquinnelly3633 For the beetle or the bus? The bus is out, and I think they have other models too that are electric. But yeah, it was coming for a long time. It is intriguing, but I am not racing out to get one.

@@classicvwbugs sorry I was trying to be specific. I heard a headline about the beetles are coming back but electric. From what I remember, it looks like a Bug from Tron movie. Thought? I know the world is moving towards electrical car, plane and such, but I feel it's a give and take.
I vote Superbeetle. I have been driving a 74 for the past 36 years. I bought it totally reconditioned for $2,000. Chose 74 for carburetor, safety and roominess. When the new beetle came out, I told people I have had my car for so long it came back in style. I have had the engine out 8 times. What a great little toy. Yes, I am 81 years old.
1970's Super Beetles for me.
Give me 60s! Had three of them.
It doesn't matter to me if I see one completely restored or walking through a junk yard, they always make me smile. I love them all.
For me 50s and 60s
I absolutely love the ‘50s ones, but, where the rubber hits the road for me, it’s the ‘60s ones that get my vote for a whole host of reasons - not the least of which is that my ‘66 was built the exact same time I was being built - and that’s just really cool to me!
I’m a fan of mid 60’s the covered headlights and fender shape is beautiful I’ve had 9 VW beetles and drive my ‘65 on weekends
My Pop bought a brand new Beetle in 1970. That started my love for the car and now have a 70 of my own! I also had a 57 oval, back when I was a poor airman in the military. Wish I still had that one!
For me personally, early 90s to early 2000s Mexican Air-cooled Beetles, you still got the looks and the simple mechanics of the original design, but also modern improvements, like factory electronic ignition, EFI that actually works, front disc brakes, electric washer fluid system, a slightly better looking dashboard (I feel the MK2 sourced light switches fit the padded dash better than the earlier push pull ones), and a catalytic converter.
And I have to admit, I'm very nostalgic for this era since it's what I grew up with, our daily was a 91 Beetle, we still have it, and it will be restored soon

I owned two bugs from the 70s but finally got a '67 a couple years ago. Anything 1967 and earlier gets my vote. Would love an oval window from my birth year... 1957!
My first car was a turquoise '61 that I still have a soft spot for. Favorite is early '50's split window. I have a late '52 Zwitter that's been going through a body-off restoration over the past 5 years. Body metal work was extensive and took 4 years to complete and now is being prepped for paint. Chassis metal has been restored and is 50% reassembled with Berg 5-speed and fuel-injected turbo with custom air-to-water intercooler. Interior is Lenny Copp herringbone cloth. Interior and exterior will look close to original. All new parts are ready for the assembly project once I have the painted body, hopefully November. 🙂
After the 50's, 60's, I like the 2000 New Beetle Turbo. I had one with an APR Stage 3 turbo kit, spoiler, and rear diffusor, that I drove to the Roswell 2K car show in 2000 & 2005 with my son. It was the fastest Beetle to run the event drag race in 2005.
I love the look of towel bar bumpers, and the stability of the 1970's vintage. I drive a 72 on the daily, and love it.
I all about the 50’s. Semi phones are the coolest thing ever…. That era is so simplistic and minimalist piece of beautiful art on 4 wheels.

68 to 72 is what I like. I got my daughter a 2010 to use for going to college. I drive a 2012 2.5 5 spd.
I was six years old when I saw Herbie on the screen and it was “car and driver” at first sight. I was drawn to it then and I haven’t stop since. I am now 33. As of right now I have owned 4 beetles since the age of 16. My first car was a dream come true. My parents surprised me with a 1976’ Herbie the love bug replica. That car was my everything. It was a standard 76’ sun bug dated back to a 63’. Bumpers, head/taillights and fenders. I had Herbie for 17 years. During that time I graduated high school, graduated collwgr, met the love of my life and we were still together. Purchased our second home
And retired from a career grocory-retail management and join the postal service to embark on a new career. Life is great. Herbie was there for all of that. While I always opened Herbie, I also acquired two new beetles. The first one was a grey metallic color and was your base model turbo beetle. I traded that one in for an upgraded model. Over the years I was so excited about my classic 76 bug that I drove it everywhere and in everything which gave me a never ending rust problem. Last summer I sought out advice from 4 different mechanics and all told me that Herbie needed a rebuild. I was in no position to take on a project myself nor spend a years plus salary on a repair such as this. So I decided it was time to part with that car in particular and buy one with lesser problems. Retire the car but preserve my Herbie dream. And with some luck, I was able to make that happen. Last year an opportunity fell in my lap to purchase a 1965 Volkswagen Beetle and gosh it was damn near perfect. So I brought it home. So over the past year I have owned quite the collection of bugs. Herbie, Herbert and Herbie No.2.
In May I had a tearful goodbye with my first ever car as I sold Herbie to someone who had the means to take on a restoration project. So I now I’m left with 65’ and 13’ I just love those two cars to pieces. I plan on putting the Herbie decals on my 65’ to keep the dream going.
…. & Chris, you did a great job on covering the historical significance of these cars in this video! Such a unique chapter in automotive history - shared by no other! One request, if you haven’t done so already, please do a video on the ultra successful & self-deprecating advertising campaigns of the 1960s in particular. It wasn’t just because of the genius design of these cars that made them so popular - those ad campaigns were no less genius representing a total paradigm shift in motoring!

Hi Folks, 70’s for me including the supers, this is the era in most people’s memories when whistling tailpipes were everywhere! I drive a super today and every time I drive it takes me back to this time.
I love the super beetle but all bugs are great
I adore all the eras, but I’m a 70s Beetle guy as that is what I can afford and just a bit easier to live with and drive everyday from my own experiences. But I don’t doubt for a second that any of the other Beetles can’t, they all can do that as it’s what they were designed to be, everyday cars for everyone. I love um all, including the New Beetle ones. :-)

I learned to drive in a 1961 Bug, drove a 1964 Bug to College, bought a 1969 Bug on my return from Vietnam (still have the 69 55 yrs later) so the 60 Bugs would be my favorite. I’m now ready to sell my Bug.
57 oval rag top 💜 ! I own a 2006 beetle convertible, money pit. It’s more enjoyable to drive than my 2019 GTI. Go figure ! Love the video. Thanks, Rick….. 🌴
Chris - Thank you for treating the 1970's Beetles fairly in this video. As I've commenting to you before, the 1980s, 1990s, and early 2000s Mexican Beetle is a great last chapter for the beloved air cool Beetle. Great job bringing the Mexi-Bugs into the discussion.
My favorite is my 1975 standard base model beetle. Bought it as my first car in 2017, and i am currently doing a full restoration on it, including the entire wiring harness. It has been the most reliable car i own, rain, snow, or shine
Hey Chris great stuff, I will go with the 60s era, I’m from New Zealand originally and my first car was a 64 and I had many Volkswagen beetles in New Zealand, out here in California I only have one at this time a 1967 bug.

Hi Chris. The 1957 oval window with a rag top. Never had one though. Almost did in the late 80's. Also, the 1966 because of all the one year parts on it... The one you purchased from me. 🙂 I do love the split windows with the crotch coolers too (ie. 1952).
Cool video! I would say for me, 1960s is my favorite, pre 67 and earlier. Love the slant back headlights. These cars are still relatively inexpensive to work on too. I love the 1940’s and early 50’s beetles too, but they are too expensive to restore for the average guy now.

I have to agree! Being a Herbie fan I like the early and mid 60s as well. The combination of the slanted headlights and the override bumpers give the car an innocent look while still being classy. I’m going to own a Herbie someday!
Chris, Hello from Auckland NZ. Great piece on how you generalise the various Beetle Stages. Really enjoyed it. I have had Beetles from the 60s, 70s, 00s to the 20 teens. My current Beetle is a 2014 TSI 1.4 called Bobby in Toffee brown with a Beige over Caramel interior, a fine car and I have had him since 2017. The one that sticks in my memory is a Candy Apple Red 63 model (Like Herbie). The lady I brought him off was the only owner and she called him Thomas. I also had a 70 and 71 1500cc, a 72 semi-auto in 1300cc and a 71 Super Beetle in 1600cc. My 2 New Beetles hailed from 2001 in Blue to a 2007 in a Mid Silver. The 07 was not well made at all. The were all loveable in many ways but I appreciate your reasoning about newer models. They capture the same feelings in my opinion as the more senior models…the have an essence about them that invokes emotion and immense pleasure in they way that they just ‘are’. The earliest 1938-1945 beetles are my favorite but these are unobtainable for me as I have very little money. I have to make do with my gloss black 1962 instead.
I like the supper Beatle's. Late 60ts But the 70ts my favorite! Wish they would bring them back‼️

I have owned 3 1967s 1 was conv., 1 1968, 1 1969, 1 1970, 2 1971 super, 1 was conv. 2 1973s, 4 1974 and 1 1975 w/ fuel injection. My fave was the 1970!
I learned to drive with a 1959. I also like the 1967 and the new VW that was available with a Turbo Diesel motor.
I like the 60s, but I also like my 78 FI convertible. The Supers drive so much nicer and that rounded front window with that extra distance between driver and windshield saved my life after hitting a deer that went through the windshield.

Chris, I really liked all of the type 1's. A friend and I made good money replacing the floors.
Today, I drive an end of production special colored NB. It is a very fun car to drive. It came with all options.
Before my '19 is a very special '14 GSR Limited edition. I drive it once a mth. It's numered 0225 of 3500 built. Befor this one was a lost cause '11 it came with a gutless Audie five cylinder engine. My first NB love was a green 2000. It had an engine with five valve s per cylinder. With a standard trany it ran very well. Terrible paint. Faded bad in three years' time.
The only beetles i like are 1974-1977. Not a huge fan of super beetles. Ive owned 2 74's and a 76. I prefer these years for the unique bright and wild colors and standard equipment. Im not a hater on the 5mph bumpers or the elephant taillights . Ive grown to like them. Id say these years are the best for daily driving a vintage beetle.

Hi Chris. Great overview of 4 great era of vw. I'm between the late 60s and the introduction of the super beetle. I love the looks of the late 60s but also love the curve windshield of the super. I have not owned a late 60s, but I did own a 1970 and currently have a 1974 super. But if ur a beetle fan, any era will be great 👍

60s for me because Herbie The Love Bug was built in 1963
super with curved windshield...have a 73 model....has dual port/1600 engine and heater works well....got it with engine in basket..however, am now considering to use it as daily driver...??
My favorite beetles are made since 1965 large windows until 2003 mexican beetles only classic aircooled beetles.
68-70 Beetles are my favorite...new enough to have received the first round of safety improvements (head restraints, collapsible steering column, etc.) but old enough to still be simple mechanically and not have the Spray Foam of Death problem. Maybe a slight preference for the 69-70 over the 68 for IRS reasons
Yup. I had a '69. My favorite for all the reasons you mentioned. I also like the more streamlined bumpers.

I like the early bugs the best, I had a 57 oval window that I wish I had back. I love the 36 horse engines for reliability but have to say that I like the 66 and the 67’s the best, I like the 1300cc in the 66 and the power of the 1500cc in the 67 along with its 12 volt electrical system. What I do not like with 66 and latter is the ball joint frontends, I have had ball joints come apart on me but I have never had a King pin Link pin come apart no matter how sloppy they get or how rough I treated them. As for the Super beetle I don’t like the Macpherson Strut frontends and I don’t like the Constant Velocity Joint transaxle that VW introduced in mid 1968. In the late 1960 and early 1970’s I worked in 3 different repair shops and as I said in a comment on one of your other videos I have owned over 90 VW’s from bugs, Karmann Ghia, a type 3 notch back to vans with the split front windshield, I do not like the one piece windshield. Of all of the VW’s that I have owned I have never owned a split window bug in fact I have never even seen one other than in photos and videos.
Former BEETLE far more exciting to drive. A death trap on wheels: tail heavy, no cumble zones,no ABS,TC,AIR BAGS,Side door beams,rollover protection, the only protection in bug was a rosary on the rear view mirror and plastic Jesus on the dash. Consumer Reports says it's more dangerous than Jay walking in NYC.

The early Beetle era is obvious, is a nazi car yet, but it's incredible engineer and design
