    so what would you say federalists got right/wrong in federalist paper 10 about the U.S.

    • @garysanders6091
      @garysanders6091 9 лет назад

      ndhernandez Well the Federalist 10 was written by just James Madison (the writers switch off) but arguably they got everything 'correct' in guessing the causes and effects of factions on modern society. However, rather his methods are optimal or appropriate are up to debate.
      Personally, I think Madison was spot on.

  • @sidepocketbetray
    @sidepocketbetray 10 лет назад

    Wait, I'm confused or I might just be really tired. You're saying the point is to make the factions larger to make unity more difficult? Wouldn't it be better to make the factions smaller creating bigger divides? I think I might just be thinking about this backwards. Does larger in this case, mean to encompass more people with the same general view but different specific views, thereby essentially deunifying the faction? If that's the case, I was thinking in terms of those groups with shared specific views being different smaller factions, or am I way off?

    • @hiphughes
      @hiphughes  10 лет назад

      The basic concept is factions develop naturally. They are unavoidable, like attracts like. Rich peeps hang with rich peeps and vica versa (Hamilton defines property as the greatest attribute in the formation of faction but certainly there are others and their effect can be analyzed) but back to the point.... Hamilton says you have 2 choices. Destroy factions (that would be communist, revolution, violence, upheaval and then they would naturally occur anyhow) OR and here it is... control their evil effects.... how do you do that? Republicanism! A big ass nation which ties us together, some people representation filtered through the elite and checks and balances to the tenth power to make changed based on factionary fire easy to extinguish. Comprehende'?

    • @sidepocketbetray
      @sidepocketbetray 10 лет назад +1

      Keith Hughes Okay, so his solution is to say, there will be factions. To avoid violent confrontation between these factions we must be a republic. Each faction will send forth a representative to argue for their faction's needs/wants. We will make sure that no leader of any faction will gain too much power through checks and balances. If one faction gets out of hand, the other factions are meant to stop that faction for the purpose of preserving the republic. Which in the end will be to the benefit of all of the factions.
      By the way, thanks for the response, and nice videos.

Aren’t their opinion and influence more accounted for due to wealth, status, and platform, thus amplifying that small percentage of the rich over the majority? Muting the average citizen’s voice is seen as justice?

    No, it was not to protect the minority of property owners from the majority of the poor, it was to blunt factions yes, but any POLITICAL faction. It was to stop any political minority from being pummeled by the political majority. To protect the rights of all political views weather they be a large group or a small group.

    • @eliakimbenishchayil
      @eliakimbenishchayil 8 лет назад

      lets step away from the platitudes and observe this objectively. The Federalist papers No. 10 says " that government ought to "protect the minority of the opulent against the majority" it is lucid and empirical. A well established fact among the academia. You are looking at the world through rose colored glasses. I will assume you are very young naive and patriotic but keep in mind Albert Einstein said " I am against any nationalism, even in the guise of mere patriotism. Privileges based on position and property have always seemed to me unjust and pernicious, as did any exaggerated personality cult."

    This is a misreading of the text that sounds more akin to conservative ideology than anything being articulated in fed 10. The essay simply warns against factionalism in whatever form it takes, pitting citizens against citizens leading to discord and gridlock. Yes, it warned against the tyranny of the property-less, but it also warned against the tyranny of the property holding and powerful faction of the rich minority. I don't know how someone claiming expertise on the matter can make such an egregious error...oh wait, yeah I do: political ideology--i.e., the very thing fed 10 warns against...

    So there you have it in plain English. Back then as now, the minority, not minorities, the elite, the rich and connected have always been preoccupied first and foremost with their survival and have always taken advantage of the majority's differences, thus factions, to keep them from uniting so they won't be a threat. But also cultivating in them some sense of common traits that will unite them whenever it suits the elite, the minority's interests.
    Pretty sneaky Mr Madison.

    One of my issues Hip is the reference to state rights crowd being axiomatically linked as pro slavery. Yes, the south used states rights as their argument. But less because of their desire for states rights, then using the argument to maintain its rights to have slaves. Now I could be wrong, but I really don't the reference. You can be states rights and abolitionists at the same time.
