Excellent review...I've carried the .38 shotshell here in AZ for quite some time and know for a fact it is a very effective round for rattlesnakes. I've found excellent patterns at 8 ft when fired from the 2" snub and the 4" smith.
Many years ago, when I was actively reloading, I actually made seven rounds very similar to this. I cut off .308 Winchester brass, and then “necked down” the front end using a die... (a washer...) carefully measuring to get the headspace right. They actually worked pretty well... As I recall I used a cut cardboard wad both under and over the shot. They fed.... Most of the time.
Love these CCI shot shells. Use them all of the time in my 9mm to dispatch venomous snakes on my property in order to protect my dogs from a dangerous, even possibly lethal bite.
They deffanitly deserve a place in your ammo stach. I carry a box of the blue n red both in my tacklebox. I killed 2 cottonmouths last spring when I was fishing off the bank. It was climbing up a hill were I was sitting. Litteraly blew its head off and it landed back in the water lol
Let's not get too crazy, we're just ribbing a fellow hunter who made a huge media mistake. It was just a hunting accident by a guy who should have known better. 3/4 oz of 7 1/2's from a 28 gauge almost did for that lawyer. Ya'll hunt safe, now.
I carry a 1911 in the desert mountains, glad to see how these rounds cycled through the action, and terminal performance at close range. Good information for rattle snakes.
Or , if your in the mountains away from your home , just leave the damn snake alone. Why you going into THEIR home and killing them for being there . I kill them all the time on my property.. i have kids and pets. But when im hiking or on the river i leave them be . They no threat to you or yours in the wild. Snakes are a very important member of a fragile ecosytem brother.. and if not for snakes , mice rats and other pest would be falling off the rooftops and in every corner. As usual, some of the best ammo videos on youtube. Thanks for the comparison at the end. Really puts it into a format newbies can understand. I think a lot of people see a small cal. shot shell and think it will work for home defense. The water jugs conclusively show that you will sting the bad-guy, not disable him. For home defense, stick to JHPs or frangible.
A very clear, concise demonstration of the practical use of this shotshell at the appropriate ranges for snakes and varmits. Very useful info down here in South Texas. Thanks!
Planning on keeping two of these in .38spc loaded in the cylinder of the Armscor M200 I'm looking at, as a snake/woods gun. Defensive ammo only in other scenarios.
Very nice video. Good comparison on multiple types of rounds and their OAL. I liked the demonstration with the targets at various distances as well. My favorite was the Tennessee Foam snake, that actually made me laugh a bit. I've seen these rounds before and never bought them because they are freakishly expensive, more than most defense loads and you get less in rounds per box, about half. My dad used to have loads similar to these for one of his revolvers when I was a kid. Anyways, job well done.
No questions, that did a great job of adding that extra bit of clarity some might desire. Something about a 230gr bullet hitting things at 800 plus FPS that just makes a guy want to shoot lots of them and steel targets are IMO the most fun.
No problem. Theyre perfect with standard springs. Even the old Remington with 280 #12 shot worked great!! Have only one round left. Wish they still made them.
Just one BB in an eye and you effectively stopped anything coming at you. The tears alone would render it/them blind. So if you have one chambered, I wouldn’t hesitate firing it in self defense. And when you are out in the wild (hunting or hiking) in snake country, I’d rather have my first three shots being snake loads and the rest being solid ammo. Just because it wont kill, doesn’t make it a bad defensive round, it all boils down to being smart enough to use it effectively.
"any questions?" Thanks for the laugh! I have had one of those come apart in a 357 and there were lots of little bbs to clean up. I think those were #12 shot. I also think it was just from the concussion of firing - I only do one round at a time in my revolvers now.
MAN, You do a really good job with these Vids. You are getting even better! This is good enough for TV! I wish you would let me send some Devestators in 38sp or 9mm though,,,
something that would be good to have while hiking. never know when your going to happen upon a copperhead, cottonmouth or rattler in thick brush or steep hillsides.....might even be effective against active wasp nests

Pistols aren't shotguns. These shotshells are for snakes, rats, and skunks that are too close. If you don't want it to go through your house get a 5.56.
the goal of SD is never to kill, it's to stop the threat, and I feel that the use of a standard defensive load would be the most reliable way to do so....as compared with a birdshot load designed for dispatching rodents and snakes.
Very nice example at the end about the proper uses for this ammo. I read some comments arguing that this would be effective for self defense, and in a jam it would be better than nothing, but certainly not first choice. As you said it is "light shooting" and doesnt have anywhere near the velocity or transferred energy as a self defense round. Youre going to injure the target with this round, in a life threatening situation you want to put the guy down so he cant return fire. Ive used these rounds in .44 magnum and they do work great for snakes. BTW barrel length also greatly impacts spread.
Very visual demonstration and very informative. I would never have thought about using a shot shell in a 1911. I think if I was that close to a snake, I would prefer a hoe and garden rake to keep it off me and exit stage left than trying to use hardball in a stress situation. Biggest snake danger is Ky is stepping over a log without seeing what is already there. Snakes strike defensively. Cottonmouth here are the most angry and charging type.
I have thought about buying some of these and loading the first round or two in my 1911. It gives idiots the chance to not die when I shoot them, but still gives me the option to drop them if the pain is not enough to stop them.
Amazing review as always. I've not commented before, but would like to commend you on your procedures. Amazing. I must say this is a cool and specific type of ammunition.. that being said is the Speer Gold Dot your go to self defense cartridge? Still reviewing your videos on SD ammo.
Considering that it's lead, I'd say nothing more than a regular bullet passing through. But I think is also has some sort of wad material to keep it together until it is out of the barrel. If that it the case, then that material is likely even softer than lead.
Good review. I have shot those before and really like them over the 40 S&W and 9mm offerings, mainly due to the fact that these are loaded with #9 as opposed to #12 shot. The downside is that they are really expensive. Unfortunately, you cannot handload the .45 ACP ones. I have found the CCI shot capsules for .44 caliber though and really love loading them myself. Can do it for pennies on the dollar. Great fun!
I've carried my 12 gauge with me while fishing for years to take care of snakes. Gonna find these in one caliber or another and just carry a pistol instead. Cool video. The foam snake and rubber lizard were excellent props to demo effectiveness. Good thinkin' 🍻
self defense? No way in hell I was in a life or death situation where I was shot from 7ft away with a 12 gauge shotgun with birdshot and I managed to pull my glock 21 gen4 45acp from laying on my back and placed 5 lethal shots into my attackers chest. So if I can take it from a 12 gauge at almost point blank range a lot smaller round from a 45acp most likely won't even knock me down but piss me off!!! and make me show that person what a 45acp hydroshok will do every time it hits it's target.
Loved the comparison with the 230g, that is a great way to demonstrate to most what the difference is. I wouldn't use them myself but I was curious, but I am going to go pick some up at the store today if they have some, got a possum problem that this may be the solution.
someone explain to me how firing two or three rounds of this into intruder would not stop them ? it wouldnt kill them no, but it would cause surely enough pain to send the intruder packing. so in that sense, being a nonlethal round, its perfect for self defense, unless your intruder is immune to pain or is wearing goggles,
Jesse Mitchell Yep. And truthfully, I want the most lethal round I can find for self-defense. Not because I want to kill anyone, but the most lethal round is going to stop the threat the most quickly. If I ever have to use my firearms against someone, it is because they are threatening my life or the life of someone else. In that case, I want to incapacitate in the fastest way possible.
Jesse Mitchell Many people continue on with 5-6 pistol caliber JHPs in them. Pain is basically a factor for voluntary ceasing of violence. Pain may persuade someone to quit. Some people ignore pain or power through it, or don't notice it until after adrenaline wears off. This is why LE and defensive ammo is designed to have a high probability of involuntary incapacitation. I.e. they stop, because major systems quit working, not because they choose to stop. If someone is trying to kill you you may only get one or two chances to make them stop. (if you get any...) Are you going to spend your only chance on something that might persuade them to quit, or on something that is nearly a guarantee they will be unable to continue? Then there is the issue of time. Even with a lethal wound, an attacker may continue for several minutes before he dies. A shot which has the penetration power to either penetrate or bruise the heart and spine is far more likely to disable the attacker instantly or within a minute than a surface wound. This still counts as lethal force from a legal standpoint, and still has the potential to kill. It just has a poor chance of doing that fast enough to stop an attack.
You keep saying they aren't for self defense, but lets just set up a "what if". Lets say you are in your house at night, and a burglar comes in. Your vision is impaired and you go to find him. Your adrenaline is pumping and you don't know what to do. You come around a corner and he tries to attack you. Chances are, you're going to be shaking, and scared. Having a widespread pattern like this will make it much more likely that you will hit him, and if you hit him in the face, he's blind and can't do anything. If you hit him in the chest he will most likely curl up in a ball due to shock as well. Ask yourself, do you really want to kill the guy in your house, or do you want to disable him? I think these guarantee a hit on target, and they do not have the same amount of energy to travel through walls. This is why I would choose a taurus judge to use as self defense rather than a regular pistol.
my thoughts exactly, you got sleep in ur eyes and ur aim is off due to just waking up. I would say having the first round be one of these aint a bad Idea, it sprays a wide area, has low penetration through walls, and its low recoil sets u up nice for a follow up shot. After that round I would suggest a fragmenting hollow point to finish the intruder before you find urself dead and ur family hurt.
These days, better to kill em than wound em. If you only wound them, believe it or not they can sue you and take everything you've got via the courts instead of breaking in. Dead men can't do that, tho the way it's getting, the family probably could. In one landmark case, a perp broke into a man's home, and was shot, but only paralyzed ... the perp sued and won on the grounds that the homeowner denied him his livelihood, breaking into people's homes and stealing. Better to put em down hard. Actually, that's why often homeowners get killed rather than the perps, the homeowners don't want to kill anyone, so they'll say something dumb like "freeze" the perp then freezes the homeowner's brains out in that moment they hesitate to fire.
tootall11211 that does not sound sound. That post alone is incriminating, its premeditated. Shooting an intruder should only be to preserve your life and the life of loved ones, only if its apparent you are imminent danger, not to avoid a law suit.
TiredOfApathy Yes, you only shoot if in imminent danger, I'm not saying otherwise, but if you shoot, shoot to kill, don't play. It could be said that if your intent is only to injure, then you're not really in fear for your life.
thinking of tossing 1-2 of these rounds in the mag and following up with nothing but Federal HST for my 45. thoughts? figured it'd be good to have have a cautionary round first. alot of people on here keep in mind that alot of people here say that if u have to defend yourself lethality is the only important factor, but where I live petty crime is VERY common so you may find yourself in situations where it's hard to tell if deadly force is needed, which is why I was considering loading 1-2 rounds and following up with the pain.
Any gunshot is considered deadly force, according to law. If the suspect is dangerous to your well-being, you need to be using real bullets and not birdshot. If not, refrain from shooting. And God help you if you blind someone with you shot loads, thug or not.
@tnoutdoors9 i guess that would also make sense, i was thinking about that after i posted the comment, and then i realized that it might have been low power.. what is the Approx. grain amount for one of those shot shells? because i have a few for my Sig in a .22, as well as my Ruger Bearcat 50th Anniversary, and from my experience, they seemed to be low power. but then again, they took off a Western Diamondback's head..
I am ready for someone to make a video shooting this ammo at a thawed chicken or turkey and show the penetration of the pellets. Anyone still convinced that these would make good self defense rounds needs to sell their guns and buy pepper spray.
Lead doesnt ricochet at the velocities firearm push them, lead splatters at high velocities like water. A grazing hit on a hard surface would change the bullet's course (still with some deformation) but a square on hit sends little pieces of the bullet (called spalling) up, down, left, right and everywher in between, just not foward or backwarx
Last spring I was fishing for blugills for catfishing bait when a huge ads cottonmouth came up the hill were I was sitting and I pulled my ruger sps101 out loaded with cci 357/38 shotshells and literally blew it's head off. It landed 10 ft back in the water. I keep a box in my tacklebox at all time.
@tnoutdoors9 you know.. ive gotta thank you for making some of the best gun vids on youtube :D ive been subbed for a while and love to check in for the new vids all the time. so thank you sir :D
04:27 yes I got an question, if you unload 5 of those pellets to some ones face from 15 ft how is it not gonna stop some one?ofc the other is better but I'd say I would stop if I get 5 or more of those in to my face. If from 15 ft 50 pellets hit that times 5 is gonna be 250 pellets in your face there is high change of atleast making some one blind. also how about loading like 2 of those pellet bullets and rest normal? you can start with pellets and mostlikey not kill anyone but then if you need to you can use the rest of the bullets that are normal.
mtkl23 By the time you decide that 5 shots of this isn't likely to stop someone and you decide to use "normal" ammo, you will have been subjected to a beat down or worse. Is the bad guy going to carry rodent control ammo in the firearm he's using against you? What part of "THIS CARTRIDGE IS NOT SUFFICIENT FOR SELF-DEFENSE" are folks missing?
***** i honestly enjoy watching your videos. they are concise and professional. i will argue however, that even though this round may not be considered lethal, i would stop if you shot me in the face with it. in fact, even if i had a firearm.
mtkl23 In a self defense situation a lot of rounds miss. I could see loading a magazine with one or two of these in addition to regular rounds to ensure you mess someone up bad.
I use the 38 spl loads on water moccasin. Even aiming at a coiled water moccasin's head at 8 ft from the muzzle, the snake is badly injured, but a long way from being dead. At about 2 feet away shooting at the head usually does the head in and most reflexes are gone. Still disposing of the snake use an implement or a stick to transport it. My gun has a 3 inch barrel. I wonder if those shot shells will function in a .45 ACP hipoint pistol.
Lol, any questions? Got to love your style! Great demonstration and thanks for all the work. I EDC a Glock 30sf and have considered those for hiking/farm snake carry.
Lots of questions about what the shot would do to your barrel. Seems to me that since the shot is made of lead, and regular bullets are made of lead (and often jacketed with copper), it would follow that there would be no damage at all. It also seems to me that there is some sort of wad-type structure surrounding the shot. Certainly this plastic is softer even than lead or copper, and so even less harmful.
I have to say I would keep it around for intruders. The question I have is would it be such a bad idea to develop a 00 buck version? I would imagine it would be fun. I think this is not meant for practical hunting or self defense rounds. But it turns your pistol into a shotgun round which is okay in the larger calibers. I will upload a 9mm version.
I know. I made the comment if you read it they need a 00 version that was not so impractical. But evidently you wanted to put your opinion over my statement and observation.
But I do hear you. Its a design someone can make a profit on. It was not designed to be versatile and practical. It was designed to keep in a market and for a company [cci] to generate a steady income from.
Depends on how much work you wish to do & how many of these shells you intend to use. I used to walk in the high sierra desert quick drawing on running jack rabbits with my old 1911 series 80. These rounds came in handy for the occasional rattler at my boot tips.
Having lived in both heavy copperhead and rattler country I often carried first and maybe second rounds of shot followed by standard rounds is great when you or your companion and I guarantee that even CCI .22 shot (@ 5ft) will make mincemeat out of snakes. Great for anything like rats, squirrels or other small varmints.
In Central America, I always loaded my first round as a shot round against snakes. When Fidelistas showed up from El Salvador, it took me 3 more shots to defend us at 15 yards.
Aug 2022 that 45 shot shell is pretty good (product), for me educaitonal video demo today, stuff I di not know. thanks this was a geeat channel when content was created
the idea with shot shells for protection is, if that hits you in the face/head you are 1: blind 2: possibly dead (depends on the distance, and penetration of the shot through your eyes) and finally 3: no longer a threat.
for self defense, this could put the hurt on somebody. Seems like it could be a non-lethal deterrent like a rubber bullet or rock salt loads in a shotgun. I would worry about them cycling in a high-pressure situation
I'd love to see this stuff run through a UMP on full auto
Sounds like an AA-12 with extra steps lol

jerry vella You'd have something that was still vastly inferior to a proper JHP.
true, but it might hold together until it hits the target and make for a decent home defence round
jerry vella Even a 12ga wax slug doesn't do very well in ballistics tests. Do you really think think the .45 ACP version is worth trusting?
i think it would be worth trying
Youd have hot wax. Pronto. Try 2 part epoxy.
Brilliant review. It’s ridiculously better than every other review on these rounds which are terrible. Thank you for posting this.👍🏻👍🏾⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Very visual demonstration and very informative.
"Any questions" I almost pissed myself laughing!
I have thought about buying some of these and loading the first round or two in my 1911. It gives idiots the chance to not die when I shoot them, but still gives me the option to drop them if the pain is not enough to stop them.
And if you blind them, it'll cost you way more than if you killed them outright.
Amazing review as always. I've not commented before, but would like to commend you on your procedures. Amazing. I must say this is a cool and specific type of ammunition.. that being said is the Speer Gold Dot your go to self defense cartridge? Still reviewing your videos on SD ammo.
+AlittleSmokey I run with the Gold Dot and HST primarily, 147 gr. Also a fan of 135 gr Critical Duty.
Alrighty then. Will see what I can find. I do think the Gold Dot was on boss level. I do have the .45 ACP for Glock 30. Thank you once again.
tnoutdoors9 I love the .45ACP 230gr HST from Federal Ammunition.
Great reviews,Thank you!
AlittleSmokey
So the Speer Gold Dot 45 ACP stays at the top of my list for defense against 2-legged predators. Shot shells for mice, rats and snakes. Thank you!
What does all that shot do the the barrel's interior?
Not sure.. But thats why I've never tried it.. LOL
Considering that it's lead, I'd say nothing more than a regular bullet passing through. But I think is also has some sort of wad material to keep it together until it is out of the barrel. If that it the case, then that material is likely even softer than lead.
sounds legit
Good review. I have shot those before and really like them over the 40 S&W and 9mm offerings, mainly due to the fact that these are loaded with #9 as opposed to #12 shot. The downside is that they are really expensive. Unfortunately, you cannot handload the .45 ACP ones. I have found the CCI shot capsules for .44 caliber though and really love loading them myself. Can do it for pennies on the dollar. Great fun!
Pretty cool ammo. I'll stick with my 230gr gold dots though.
I've carried my 12 gauge with me while fishing for years to take care of snakes. Gonna find these in one caliber or another and just carry a pistol instead.
Cool video. The foam snake and rubber lizard were excellent props to demo effectiveness. Good thinkin' 🍻
I need the box with the picture of the looter on it. 🤣
I personally used one of these on a copperhead once. It turned that snake into snakeburger, & it cycles the gun just fine. It's a handy round.
self defense? No way in hell I was in a life or death situation where I was shot from 7ft away with a 12 gauge shotgun with birdshot and I managed to pull my glock 21 gen4 45acp from laying on my back and placed 5 lethal shots into my attackers chest. So if I can take it from a 12 gauge at almost point blank range a lot smaller round from a 45acp most likely won't even knock me down but piss me off!!! and make me show that person what a 45acp hydroshok will do every time it hits it's target.
@@stetlan5582 shut up Chad. You would probably freeze up if any one really broke in ahaha
Loved the comparison with the 230g, that is a great way to demonstrate to most what the difference is. I wouldn't use them myself but I was curious, but I am going to go pick some up at the store today if they have some, got a possum problem that this may be the solution.
someone explain to me how firing two or three rounds of this into intruder would not stop them ? it wouldnt kill them no, but it would cause surely enough pain to send the intruder packing. so in that sense, being a nonlethal round, its perfect for self defense, unless your intruder is immune to pain or is wearing goggles,
Jesse Mitchell The problem is that your gun probably won't cycle reliably.
wjennin1 solid enough answer, best not to have a jam when youre being intruded
Jesse Mitchell
Yep.
It just has a poor chance of doing that fast enough to stop an attack.
you have never dealt with people on pcp. it is obvious.
Beautiful pattern for snake shot, very humorous review!
I see your point, but I still wouldn't even think about using these for self defense. I'd rather know the threat is neutralized rather than injured.
my thoughts exactly, you got sleep in ur eyes and ur aim is off due to just waking up.
TiredOfApathy
Yes, you only shoot if in imminent danger, I'm not saying otherwise, but if you shoot, shoot to kill, don't play.
And God help you if you blind someone with you shot loads, thug or not.
hot wax in it ?
ouuuuuuuuuuu now there's an idea!!! LOL
I like your channel especially for your very precise and well worked numbers. This time you had to do tedious counting, very nice work.
4:01
I really hope no one is enough of a freaking moron to carry this round for self defense. But I'm willing to bet someone is.
When it was all I could find yes. But I quickly found a better round.
18 of these bad boys would stop anyone lol
Excellent Comedy at the End. Great timing between shots, made the joke great !!!
Thank-you, Again, you will be Missed !
Hill Shepherd
Tennessee square foam-snake!!! LMAO :)
Jeremy Lafary ....... then do it.
I really enjoy your videos. Informative, succinct and interesting.
i'm glad you didn't get hit with any ricochet from that distance
I Thank You. I've been eyeballing those for rodents on the farm from my old Beretta Cougar. I was worried about cycling.
Wow that was friggin amazing!!!! I love those little killers!!!
I don't think so. Blanks are crimped at the end and I don't know if you noticed but the edge of the .45 shotshell was quite blunt.
I'd be a bit concerned about ruining the rifling
great video, I have been wanting to get some shot for a while now but did not know if it would cycle. thank you
@tnoutdoors9 you know.. ive gotta thank you for making some of the best gun vids on youtube :D ive been subbed for a while and love to check in for the new vids all the time. so thank you sir :D
*****
i honestly enjoy watching your videos. they are concise and professional. i will argue however, that even though this round may not be considered lethal, i would stop if you shot me in the face with it. in fact, even if i had a firearm.
mtkl23 In a self defense situation a lot of rounds miss.
Thank you for a well done, very informative video. Exactly what I wanted to know.
I wouldn't buy these. They are only for close distances. IF they had double otte or 3 or 4 in them I would buy them.
What if you made wax slugs with these?
Don't know.
WE MISS YOU BRO!!!!
Any questions?
No Sir I believe you summed that up correctly!
Depends on how much work you wish to do & how many of these shells you intend to use. I used to walk in the high sierra desert quick drawing on running jack rabbits with my old 1911 series 80. These rounds came in handy for the occasional rattler at my boot tips.
An excellent, thorough review. Thanks!
We are loading 5.56 and 300 blk with birdshot that cycles in the AR platform. Soon we will have video up on our channel.
Aug 2022
that 45 shot shell is pretty good (product), for me educaitonal video demo today, stuff I di not know.
thanks
this was a geeat channel when content was created
Yes, it does add a considerable amount of lead fouling. Harder (chilled) shot is preferable.
I'm surprised this cycled the 1911 compared to the other shotshell tests you've done.
the idea with shot shells for protection is, if that hits you in the face/head you are 1: blind 2: possibly dead (depends on the distance, and penetration of the shot through your eyes) and finally 3: no longer a threat.
This completely depends on were you're living. Apartment , down your hallway in your house. I'm going with the birdshot.
I'd like to see the possible internal damage of the shot shell on ballistic gel
for self defense, this could put the hurt on somebody. Seems like it could be a non-lethal deterrent like a rubber bullet or rock salt loads in a shotgun. I would worry about them cycling in a high-pressure situation
Excellent vid, man. Thanks for posting this.
Now that would be interesting. I would expect performance somewhat like a Glaser safety slug, but lighter weight (obviously).
