I started a class in systematic theology yesterday. The more knowledge about the Bible I have, the more I know about God. The more I know about God, the closer relationship I have with him.
I even know a retired Presbyterian minister (a denomination that requires a doctorate!) Who was reprimanded by his elders for having too large of a theological library...
Much needed Rant! Personally having been saved in a traditional Pentecostal denomination during my teenage years (many years ago LOL) this was the attitude of some people who frowned upon those who went to theology school; said the exact same words you said brother. You are spot on an this was a good application of scripture . 👍🏾
Well said. It is that exact type of person that directly led to me turning my back on having anything to do with the faith for most of my life starting at an early age. Now I've only recently had a change of heart after many years of accedemic study with several classes in both old and new testament as well as the ancient history and mythology of both Greek and Mesopotamia, then actually reading through the Bible closely and even then being resistant to changing my stubborn mind. With all that said it still took years more of studying after my wife resuscitated my stubborn self back from the House of Hades cracking some ribs in the process before I finally found that I was being and idiot because of people acting like idiots when it all boils down to it. I still can't read the comments section on theological or religious videos without it angering me with how dense people can be.
Such great points. This really helped me in my new approach to reading the Bible again after decades away from it PRECISELY BECAUSE of this limited egotistical mindset.
Yes! Yes! Yes! Thanks so much for saying this in such a clear way. It is something that needs to be said. It is similar to one of my other pet-peeves: when someone preaching says "The Bible clearly teaches..." and then goes on to teach an interpretation of the Scripture from a specific tradition of interpretation without saying that other Christians throughout history have interpreted the passage differently and come to different conclusions. So they end up hiding their tradition of interpretation by saying the Bible 'clearly teaches.' It is very confusing at best. It doesn't equip people to engage the Scriptures on a deeper level. And, at worst, it is deceptive.
I had a similar experience with a leader in a independent restoration church that I assisted 30 years ago (now, from 5 years ago, I assist and am member of a Christian and Missionary Alliance local church in Ponce, Puerto Rico). This leader said me that he does not consult commentaries, because are words of men.

He even told me once that the New JPS Translation of the Tanahk was "a bad translation" when I quoted it in a rebuttal of something I was questioning that he had taught. That was only the first of many other "I just read the bible" things he espouses.

Good argument against Sola Scriptura. The Church is the pillar and foundation of truth (1st Timothy 3:15), and no prophecy of Scripture is subject to private interpretation (2nd Peter 1:20-21). But I'm Catholic, so of course I believe that. 😊

Good and needed rant! I don't agree with all that you teach but I respect it and I consider it too. It's OK if you rant again and again if you feel it's necessary.
Whenever someone says they listen to God and not men, I tell them that when all they are doing is praying and assuming whatever they hear is from the Spirit, they are still just listening to "men"--it's just that they are now "the man" they are listening to and have fallen into the deception crediting their every imagination to the leading of the Holy Spirit. But my all-time favorite--there are people who come after me because there is a certain cult leader who hates my focus on Covenants--because I teach from scholarly materials and he teaches cultish nonsense (that he got from another cult, actually). When they try to "talk sense" into me, they tell me I should listen to God and not men and I have to counter that they shouldn't mistake their teacher for God...

Unless you completely and blindly adopt whatever someone says without thinking. You're relying on your interpretation. Even if I'm being taught by reading translated scripture. If I disagree with interpretation, I'm not going to go with it. Or If a teacher tells me something, and I think about it, process it, and eventually agree. I like the Living Bible, but would see it as more suitable for casual reading or maybe devotional use. Likewise, the NLT, which is a close relative of the Living Bible. My list of "go to" Bibles for study groups is influenced by the preference of the group, and includes the NKJV.
@@richardvoogd705 Yeah I prefer the NLT over the living bible, which it is based on. Got used to kjv now so I usually stick to that. But not opposed to the csb or other versions. No point being so anal since Jesus didn't speak greek anyways.

I no longer hold to that, but I really had to start doing a lot more thinking after I started to doubt
The mechanics of a translation from one language to another, has absolutely nothing to do with MANS interpretation of that text. If your argument is that because they got the translation right, therefore they have the interpretation of that same text correct is without foundation, the one has nothing to do with the other. I totally agree that one must be willing to listen to what is being shared regardless of their degrees or titles. This is true of a layman or a professor of theology, but to place one above or below, is where things begin to be a little muddled. We are encouraged to seek out our own salvation in fear and trembling and not to rely upon another man's opinion, be he a professor or a laymen, brother or sister. We are to trust God, by the leading of his Holy Spirit and the teachings of Jesus as our master teacher. We do so by the use of the foundation given to us through the testimony of the Apostle and Prophets with Jesus Christ as the cornerstone. We know that there are man made doctrines and traditions, and the word tells us clearly to stay away from them. While I understand your premise, I disagree with your conclusion. Jesus stood against the so-called theologians of his day, because they had not the SPIRITUAL EYE'S or EAR'S to hear or see. They did what they did, for appearance sake, which has led to the great falling away from the faith. they allowed their followers to be ignorant of the devils devices by not allowing them to read the bible themselves. A true teacher helps his student to know how to learn what the teacher has, so he can stand upon his own interpretation through the word of God and the Holy Spirits leading in this we have NO NEED that a MAN teach us, to translate is NOT to teach. I find very little truth in what you are saying and or any reason what so ever to believe that you, yourself are even aware of the peril that exist in defending a position that you yourself have not thought out well enough to present a logical premise. Unfortunately I think you are as ignorant, as you would have us believe these others you speak of are.
"We are encouraged to seek out our own salvation in fear and trembling" No, that is not what the text says. If you are going to call someone ignorant, you may want to be accurate when citing Scripture. "A true teacher helps his student to know how to learn what the teacher has, so he can stand upon his own interpretation through the word of God and the Holy Spirits leading in this we have NO NEED that a MAN teach us" This is a self-contradicting statement...again, ironic in a post telling someone they "have not thought out well enough to present a logical premise." If you admit we all need teachers to guide us as we grow in our understanding of Scripture, then you aren't disagreeing with my conclusion. And yes, ALL translation is interpretation...which is a form of teaching. Jesus wasn't against the "so-called theologians of his day" because they were teachers--but because they were teachers *who opposed the Gospel*.
@@DiscipleDojo You are a total idiot, you really need to re-read your own reply. The word of God says that we have no need for a MAN to teach us, and no translating is NOT the same as teaching, a scribe writes down what he hears and a teacher is the one the scribe writes down what is being taught. A scribe can translate, but only a teacher can teach. You should have taken the advice of the word of God and not let many become teachers for then they have the greater responsibility for what they teach. Your premise is still incorrect, it doesn't change because you think to translate is the same as to teach.
@@DiscipleDojo When scripture says that we have no need for a man to teach us, you need to understand who man is verse the new creation, there not the same. Yes we are to work out our salvation in fear and trembling, do I need to find the numbered verse for you?. We have no need for a man to teach us because Jesus Christ is our teacher for those of us who can receive that saying by faith.
@@nonenone9457I have seen in the introductions to some of the work of Bible translator JB Phillips comments relating to the idea of translators being interpreters. He appears to be aware of some of the hazards of translating the Bible. In the Translator's Foreword of my copy of The New Testament in Modern English, (Geoffrey Bles, London, 1960) he writes "But "interpretation" can also mean transmitting meaning from one language to another, and skilled interpreters in world affairs do not intentionally inject any meaning of their own."
As Jeremiah prophesied, the Nations/Gentiles will come to see that they have inherited only lies, emptiness in which there is nothing of any avail. The Bible is the Jewish Torah/Tanakh, it was written in Hebrew and sealed in the Days of the Prophets Ezra and Zechariah. The Christian OT is a Purposely Mistranslated Christianized version of the Jewish Bible, it blends the Truth with Man Made lies and the Greek NT, stands in Opposition to the Bible, Jewish Scripture.

This is the problem, when one Bible, two and three say something different than what the words that one is told is disconcerting to say the least. My biggest problem is the quite large number of pivotal words of the modern bibles that do not potray the true meaning of the Hebrew or Greek, The Hebrew and Greek interlinear Bible has been of the greasted help over the years. 1 John 4 English Standard Version Test the Spirits 4 Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, for many false prophets have gone out into the world. 2 By this you know the Spirit of God: every spirit that confesses that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God, 3 and every spirit that does not confess Jesus is not from God. This is the spirit of the antichrist, which you heard was coming and now is in the world already. 4 Little children, you are from God and have overcome them, for he who is in you is greater than he who is in the world. 5 They are from the world; therefore they speak from the world, and the world listens to them. 6 We are from God. Whoever knows God listens to us; whoever is not from God does not listen to us. By this we know the Spirit of truth and the spirit of error. Truth cannot and should never be regulated to perceived truth and truth's stronghold should never ever be a product of tradition; yet it for the most part is. Which is why we have dozens of Churches speaking a different understanding.

All well what about the liers that's in for the money
As Jeremiah prophesied, the Nations/Gentiles will come to see that they have inherited only lies, emptiness in which there is nothing of any avail. The Bible is the Jewish Torah/Tanakh, it was written in Hebrew and sealed in the Days of the Prophets Ezra and Zechariah. The Christian OT is a Purposely Mistranslated Christianized version of the Jewish Bible, it blends the Truth with Man Made lies and the Greek NT, stands in Opposition to the Bible, Jewish Scripture.
No. It really doesn't. But thanks for chiming in.

For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but having itching ears, they shall heap to themselves teachers in accordance with their own lusts.
1 John 4
English Standard Version
Test the Spirits
4 Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, for many false prophets have gone out into the world.
Makes you wonder how third world new believers get by with maybe just a few pages of the Bible with no access to scholars.
"Pages of the Bible"...produced by scholars. Having taught village pastors and Christian workers in developing nations firsthand, I can tell you that they crave teaching when they can get it and will sit for hours on end with a passion for learning that puts most of us to shame.
@@DiscipleDojo that was my point. I think it is incredible. I hope I didn’t offend.
No offense at all, man. Thanks for clearing up what you meant!
