How to calculate pao2/fio2 in the ER
Hi Anisha, thank you for your question!
1st step: Obtain an ABG and all you need is 2 pieces of information:
1) FiO2 (The oxygen concentration the patient is on, please watch COPD lecture for explanation on how much FiO2 you get from different liters of oxygen via NC, Face Mask or Non-Re-breather). If intubated or on NIPPV(CPAP or BIpap), you will know the FiO2 from the machine that you have set directly.
FiO2 is normally written as below:
10%: 0.1
50%: 0.5
100%: 1
2) PaO2 (small "a" for arterial oxygen concentration) is on the ABG that you obtain
Once you have these 2 pieces of information simply use the following equation:
PaO2/FiO2
*For example if patient was on 50% FiO2 and ABG shows a PaO2 of 50
then PaO2/ FiO2= 50/0.5= 100 (which is severe ARDS)
