HERRINGBONE chains are a nightmare...

  • I wanted to make a review and just give my 2 cents regarding the Herringbone chain. I love them and respect them. I've had trouble in the past with them. If I sold them today, they would do really well but they're not the most durable chains in the world. You need to be careful and really think about if it's worth the risk.

To avoid kinks and bends, you have to get these made in larger links 7mm+ and only 16-18” long so it doesn’t have enough slack to bend back on itself. These are best worn as ‘chokers’ and looks fantastic at that length on both genders. Think epic Egyptian glam collar. 😂

I do agree with you. I have one which is 3mm wide and 18" long.
It looks so nice and beautiful when worn. The problem is that it kinks so often and I can never untangle it this time.
I should have picked a wider or thicker one.
I'm searching Internet and all U-tube to find a solution, which I can't find so far.

Jacoje, I wish I had known this when my wife bought it for me. I guess I may hold the record for longevity; I put it on around June of 1992. I never took it off and it survived showers physical exercise and all that time there was a pendant attached. Fast forward it finally kinked two days ago when I had to take it off for an X-ray. I have looked for a way to fix it but as you and others have said, it ain't gonna happen. After 29 years of faithful service, I can't complain.

When my grandfather passed at the beginning of this I inherited his 50-year-old solid gold 14k Italian made herringbone chain. It has a lot of sentimental value to me because I've never not seen him not wearing it. It wasn't in pristine condition but considering it's 50 years old I can't be mad at that. I love this chain and as delicate as it is it's held up really well over those years. It had to be repaired but luckily it was right behind the clasp so it's minimally noticeable and it couldn't have happened in a better location.

If you handle them with care and coil them up when your not wearing them they will last forever. If you kink them you can fix it enough to wear it all you have to do is cut out the kink remove the cut pieces on each end you will see one end will have almost a lattice end cut through the bottom where little holes are and you can slide the two ends together and the chain will be wearable again!!!

I was in high school back in the 90's when gold was something like $500/oz so a LOT of people had gold chains back then. Herringbones looked great and they were a fairly inexpensive way to have a wide chain look...but it was pretty well known that they were a problematic chain that was easily damaged, and that it was easy to SEE the damage. Herringbones work for certain people who are really careful/aware/etc., but your average person should probably not own one.

I have couple herringbone chains, however mine are a little different where it has a thinner chain welded in the center of herringbone when it was made , which I’m guessing they did for strength and not to kink up .and it’s been years and still no issues. It’s not an everyday wear for me but I do use it a lot. so maybe that’s an option for people. Good luck everyone.

Had a sterling silver herringbone necklace and bracelet for 10 years. Never had a problem and eventually gave them away when I transitioned to gold only. Although I know several people who had linked herringbones and wore them with no shame. I have to agree with you though. Herringbone is a lot of necklace for the gram weight and they look amazing. I remember seeing drug dealers in the 90’s with what had to be 15mm+ gold herringbones. Absolutely massive, but they kind of faded away. I wouldn’t mind having another one in 18k rose for a unique aesthetic.

Good video. I had a 10kt gold herringbone chain when I was a teenager. It didn’t take long to kink and eventually split (broke) in two. Back then, I was not educated on getting cash for scrap gold and the internet was not available like it is today. So, I trashed it, not knowing I could get money for the value of the gold as scrap. I would never buy another herringbone, because there are other chains that look just as good, with more durability. Great video.

You have to store them flat and treat them like a delicate baby... BUT, they have that lush 80's throw back vibe when all the cool kids were wearing them. :). I just snatched up a used one off eBay... it has a tiny bend in it, but for the price I got it for, it's not too bad. Sometimes with vintage pieces they come with a little wear on them. If you're careful, you can gently burnish over the spot with a smooth steel burnisher... but if you mash too hard, it will make it worse. When they're nice, they look like liquid gold around your neck... so... kinda worth the risk. :)

@JACOJE LYNX I got a $600 herringbone that's a way thicker than that one like at least by three times, if they do can't you can't or break, and they're real gold, you can't have them mail it down, if they can't fix it, like if your rope breaks, you can't get them to melt the go down and make something else out of it, or sell it for the value of the gold to someone, as in a company that can melted down and make something out of it

  • @CountryBoyJoina

I got a big one 22mm. weighing 105.6 grams 10kt. 24inches I have had this for almost 20 years. I would love to get another one but can not find one of this quailty. The newer herringbones are garbage. The bigger herringbones are generally the most durable. The herringbone chain is not an everyday necklace and it is one you baby and put up. You take it off you put it in a big jewlery box that it can lay flat. There are rules with this chain. Do not sleep or shower with this one weir it make sure it lays flat on a hard surface when you take it off. For those who have one of the bigger ones or old jewlery do not scrap it because the older jewlery was the best in quality and they do not make quality gold jewlery anymore. Cherish your older pieces because once they are melted and gone thats it. If you are not the one to baby and are lazy with your jewlery, leaving it everywhere and not cleaning it, and putting it up, this chain is a waste of your money, but if you can take care of it there is nothing cleaner than a big gold herringbone or a donkey rope chain.
