Hi Mam, Thank you for your teaching. It helps me a lot. If after paying dividends to Preference share holders then what is the profit left is all to the equity share holders. Then how there be a surplus amount?
For preference shareholders the dividend is fixed but for equity shareholders the dividend will vary depending upon the profits. It will be decided upon and declared in the meeting of the company

Dividend will be given only if there are profits. This is applicable to all the shareholders. But for cumulative preference shares , if there is a huge profit, arrears of dividend ( dividend not paid in the previous years due to losses) will be given from the profits. Other shareholders are not eligible to get this arrears
