I'm not Japanese. I've always thought there's something special about the 80s or early 90s in Japan. This piece by Himiko san reinforces that impression. (BTW, she deserves much more attention than she has received. Her music is a hidden gem). The first time I traveled to Japan was in 1995; I still remember the incredible energy level of Shibuya's main entrance street at night (near Tower Record) packed with foreigners and locals. I felt enormous pride by simply lingering there and being part of the crowd. Now, Shibuya is not what it used to be; nor any part of Tokyo for that matter. Shibuya's heydays are long gone; so are those of Japan's city pop and fusion jazz. Interestingly, when I visited Hong Dae (in Seoul) with a Japanese friend of mine a few years ago, I could feel the same level of energy at night along with the communal experience--though lamentably I was two decades older then. To me, Hong Dae in the 2010s pre-pandemic hearkens back to Shibuya in the early 1990s.
For some reason, the generation born in postwar Japan between 1945 and 1965 produced many outstanding musical talents in various genres. It was just around the time they came of age, from 1965 to 1985, that their talents blossomed. This is the generation that is now lumped together with ”the Japanese city pop of the 1980s”. One of the reasons for this is that it was a time of postwar industrial revival, when many world-scale companies were born in Japan. For example, the musical instrument manufacturing industry, such as YAMAHA, invested aggressively in programs for music education for young children, the management of music schools for children, and the establishment of professional auditions and music awards to discover musical talent in Japan, in order to increase the demand for their products in Japan and to expand their sales market. Himiko Kikuchi was also a member of this generation, and she had a music career in the children's music education environment of the time and even graduated from a music college. Although some musical geniuses were born from this environment, they were not able to enter the global market because they were Japanese, and only a handful of them were able to succeed in Japan. Even the likes of Tatsuro Yamashita and Masayoshi Takanaka, even in their heyday in Japan, never had a chance to get a contract with a major Western label to sell their music to the international market (Takanaka has even been told that there is no market for his music in the US), and have remained in Japan without ever receiving the recognition they deserve. Thus, many musically talented musicians of the time were unable to enter into sales contracts with major Western labels for the global market, and were thus bound and buried only in the Japanese domestic market. This is why until the birth of the Internet, many people around the world were unaware of the existence of Japanese musicians and the vast number of musical works.
Thank God, this was my favorite song by her, back in 1980 school time, almost every night I played on my cassette player. Thank you for uploaded to you tube. One of great Japanese jazz musicians.

更に高崎さんの体調の事情により俳優の柴俊夫さんが高崎さんの後を引き継いだことも有名ですし、この柴さんの後釜は大島さと子さんと徳光正行さんがつとめるも、正行さんはわずか３ヶ月でクビになりましたし
