Enjoyed watching this. As a local, my heart sank when you said you were heading to the town centre (which is best avoided), but you went to old town which is a great place for good ales.
This is your best out and about vid Simon. The guy at Arkells was so interesting and articulate and had a real passion for the industry. Initially I was a bit concerned that the vid would be too long, but it was great, a real film, I was hooked. Love your passion and its good to see that your following has garnered respect. This is definitely the future for you. It's like a historical document in terms of industrial revolution, but with 🍻. Love it, keep it up. Loving the diversity in the channel, which is reflected in your positive outlook to seek out different avenues for the channel. Brilliant. Well done 👏 👏 👏
I'm 30 now, born in Swindon, 26 years of my life I lived there. I had NO idea that this was open to the public like this.. I am 10000% percent visiting next time I'm down visiting mum and dad!! Ace video Simon
Great stuff! I live about a mile away from the top of Old Town in Swindon so it was nice to see some of my locals. Shame the Little Hop and the Hop Kettle Tap was not open as they are well worth a visit.
Brilliant film of Arkells. Thank you. You picked up on Ushers outside one of the pubs. Ushers were based in Trowbridge The brewery closed around 2000 and brewing equipment bought by North Korea and shipped over to Pyongyang!
Brilliant! Just a lil bit of info.....Much like Mr. Arkell, my Family history is interlinked with the Railways....My Great, Great, Great, And On, And On, And On....Uncle was George Stephenson; The inventor of The Rocket Steam Train and, indeed, I work for the Company that invented the Motor Car. So it is really interesting to see such history and reverence for that went before us being utilised today and also in the future, I am sure. Also, I moved to Swindon just as C-19 was hitting and moved back to Milton Keynes just as the C-19 "New Normal" started...Brilliant timing; That's one of my special skills.... Wood Street & Devizes Street are good. I am really pleased that you discovered Magnum; They are BRILLIANT in there! I have spent sometime in there discussing all things Beer and my Partner all things Gin with the owners who are friendly, welcoming, knowledgably interesting without being condescending...They really do want you to enjoy what they sell! The Vic. is AMAZING! Friendly, funny, and just wonderful...They also have some great Bands playing there. The Hop Inn....What can I say!? Great Beer & Cider, Superb Food and they love Doggos! Oh! And my old neighbour, is the Head Chef at The Biplob....Stunning food and service, there. Sadly, and as my opening line states, I hit Swindon just as C-19 landed so was unable to visit the Arkells Brewery, but have sat at the traffic lights, staring wistfully out of my car window trying to imagine the interior machinations and workings of the Brewery, many times....Some Pals who have been round there described it thus..."Wonderful! It's like a Jules Verne image inside the old building". Come have a squizz at my Food & Drink Exploits on Instagram : @littlebearbbq_and_food
Finally got round to watching the full episode. WOW simply putting it this is tremendous! The brewery is so much more interesting than the “push button” breweries of today. This also highlighted to me the importance of these videos being filmed just by Si and not having a crew with him. This is real tv for me, it’s real life and that’s why so many people enjoy watching these out and about videos. Si well done again mate and this is why I will always be a member of the channel and will always support you and the channel to get more of this content.
Wow, best one yet! what a brewery tour! So fascinating, loved it....thanks very much. Really want to try the beer!!!! Can see a trip to Wiltshire on the cards
Another great addition to the series, and so useful. I went to Swindon for a day last year specifically to check out the craft beer places - every single one in this video I missed (I think I went to taprooms and new town mainly). Great to know there's plenty more to see, and Arkell's looked amazing!
I'm not allowed to swear - but this is flippin' amazing! Never planned to sit down and watch a (nearly) 2 hour video this evening. But WOW! What an experience. Thank you, Simon for taking us with you. That brewery is out of this world. I adore historical, industrial architecture - this was right up my alley ❤️❤️❤️ All power to your channel - this is some top quality content x
Used to work in Swindon woolies behind record bar in the 90s and Wiltshire hotel and used to do a few dj chillout gigs in brunel rooms and go clubbing there too most weekends. 🍺 theres the plough inn pub in fairford thats been arkells for donkeys years. First pub i had shandy and the newly invented dry roasted peanuts.
Great video Simon loved the old brewery tour didn’t realise how much work went into brewing beer and what a lovely chap he was and very knowledgeable keep up the good work mate loved it 👍
Great stuff / Really interesting. Looking forward to the Salisbury tour / the famous Haunch Of Venison pub there, looks like it's well worth a pint in........ Stone The Crows / 👍
What you said about “how often do you see pubs being taken over by someone with a massive passion for beer” is spot on. It’s so rare. It’s either tap rooms (which for me there still isn’t enough of anyway) or really nice pubs with really rubbish beer. I’d love a combination of the two and I had hoped with the rise of craft beer and the resurgence of German and Belgian beer that pubs would change but it’s still not happening. Shame.
Fantastic brewery tour and the Knowledge and passion for the whole brewing process expressed by Alex was incredible.Excellent series Simon keep it going Slainte .
Brilliant film that actually showcased a piece of the good side of my home town, it really is a hub for people who have a love and passion for real ale and craft beers, we just don't ever seem to advertise it as well as you have. I live just a stones throw from the arkells brewery and am very proud of the local history and contributions they have made over their many years. I do think you need to pop back and do a part 2 as there are a few more places you didn't visit or were closed on this occasion and woukd love to see your reviews and opinions.
Absolutely brilliant video, it was great to see Alex, so passionate about the way he brews his beer and a excellent tour of all the processes, thoroughly enjoyed the video Simon, cheers mate 👍🙂
When I go to a pub I look for quality local beer. Many of the craft brewer pubs sell maybe 80-90% just IPAs and Sours. Just make a good lager/pale ale/amber ale/bitter/porter and the odd seasonal ale and I'm happy. One thing they used to do in Tasmania is to brew a special lager with fresh hops during the hop harvesting season. It was SO good, wished more breweries would offer that.
A free ticket 🤣🤣, the times I told myself that mate, another great video Simon, well done sir. Return to Bristol one day and I'll show you some proper cider places👍😁♥️
Fantastic video Simon, kept me watchin until the end and Wow , a proper brewery. I have had a couple of their beers while at my brothers in Cotswolds, amazing beer, totally beautiful 😋😋
This was great! Awesome tour and talk. Never thought I'd watch the whole thing when I looked at the time length, but I did. Was fascinating all the way. have to visit next time I'm in the UK.
Great video young Mr Arielle seems a fantastic chap and very proud of his brewery I live right across the road wonderful to find out the fascinating history of the the local brewery 😎👍
am descended from the northumberland Arkell family, who lived in the county from 1700 at least, and maybe from 1500s. Cant as yet find a link to the wiltshire arkell family. One theory online is we are all of dutch descent, but noone has proved it.
You missed out some gems! Both of The Hop pubs, The Tupenny and the Hop Kettle bar called The Tap and Brew. You really need to come back and give them a go 🍻
Is there any chance you could do a pub tour of Plymouth, its not much further than Swindon....I live here and think Plymouth is VERY behind with the times when it comes to small breweries bottle shops and taprooms but you seem to be able to find unusual breweries! I've heard of Arkells it's sometimes sold in Devon, excellent beer!!
@@danieloliver4558 I was trying to be optimistic and make Plymouth sound exiting and accessible it's probably 60+ miles further from Cardiff than Swindon. Very lacking in tap rooms and bottle shops for a city of 250,000
The Beehive on Prospect Hill used to be a good locals pub on three levels with a reputation for good real ale and woolly jumper music. It would've meant another climb from where you were. Amazed you found The Roaring Donkey... back in the Eighties it was called The Rising Sun but everyone called it The Roaring Donkey so it would appear they've changed the name... I may have got that wrong but remember something odd about the sign.
When both Alex and Simon drinking beer in the pub, you can see Alex calculating, sucking up all the info Simon gives him, Simon being himself and just sharing his honest taste stages about beer. Like "Hmmm, never thought of that", and sometimes even think and look away "Interesting, nobody told me that". Well done Simon & Alex. From The Netherlands I'm wishing you both a Happy Malty Hoppy Nutty, Fruity, Biscuity New Year!! Cheers! 🍻🍺🍻

The picturesque traditional family brewery and congratulations on a cracking video Simon cheers🍺
Great to see inside the brewery, I live just around the corner from Arkells and the smell on brew day is amazing.
This is the best one of the series yet, the Arkell tour alone was really brilliant
Totally agree!
Yes that really was a fascinating insight. The guys there seemed like really decent chaps
Great video, for once showing Swindon in a better light.
I'm 30 now, born in Swindon, 26 years of my life I lived there. I had NO idea that this was open to the public like this.. I am 10000% percent visiting next time I'm down visiting mum and dad!! Ace video Simon
Just finished the video, looks like we're on a pub crawl next time down!!
Great stuff! I live about a mile away from the top of Old Town in Swindon so it was nice to see some of my locals. Shame the Little Hop and the Hop Kettle Tap was not open as they are well worth a visit.
Loving these vid's. Been to Swindon but not the parts you went to. Look forward to a visit again. 👏

Hats off to the lovely brewery 👏👏👏👏 this video is a stone the crows it’s a Ten 👏👏👏
Fantastic video, Simon. Best one of the series so far for me. Looking forward to the next video and when you're in my home city of Birmingham.
Arkell brewery, what a beautiful place. A historical place doing what they've always done. Love it.

Thoroughly enjoyed your tour of Swindon thanks Simon. Especially the walk through of the wonderful Arkell Brewery. 😎🍻
Fantastic. Need to get to Swindon to try some Arkells.
Simon, I live on devizes road, come back when tap and brew and little hop are open and have some more craft beers !
So much rich character in the design and architecture
Absolutely love the history of Arkells. Thanks to them for allowing the tour and for the video Simon.
Essentially a one man documentary. Outstanding content.

I live near swindon in wiltshire and loved this. You should do more of these is the best content I've seen in a long time.

This was a great watch, enjoy the enthusiasm you both have in this video.
Great video Simon loved the old brewery tour didn’t realise how much work went into brewing beer and what a lovely chap he was and very knowledgeable keep up the good work mate loved it 👍
By adding hops to preserve the beer, how long did they expect the life to be of the beer back then? Great video Simon!!
