  • We had a talk with Tommy just before their epic show at the Ziggo Dome in Amsterdam, one of the many stops on the European leg of Sabaton's "Tour to End All Tours". Tommy's inspirations as a (power) metal guitarist, how he believes Sabaton is power metal and a little peek at some future plans were all part of the highly interesting conversation!

    So glad to see this interview. In one of the Sabaton vlogs (or something) Tommy mentions that he's having tea, that not all musicians are always drinking beer. I really, really appreciate him saying that. Beer is great, and I've drunk my share of it. But, there are also pitfalls with the stuff. It means a lot to people that someone can be cool and talented without drinking alcohol. Just wondering if Tommy gets mobbed at the store when he's getting milk and toilet paper before returning to his mansion on the hill:)

(Love that album) .. suspect he likes history.. both story and storytelling . My take on it is that the foundation is the most important and transcends what’s on top .. you can take inspiration from the music no matter what 😉

    Thank you so much for conducting this interview! It was very interesting for me especially to hear you ask questions from your perspective as it is sort of the logical opposite of mine (as in, I was a fan of Tommy's music with ReinXeed/Majestica and elsewhere well before ever hearing a Sabaton song.)
    And I was glad to hear you pick up so well on his character. I think that is one of the main reasons he has so many faithful fans - he's not just an amazing artist and performer, but always conducts himself as a genuinely good, down-to-earth person as well. If anyone would have reason to act haughty, with his extremely high level of talent and skill, he would, and yet he doesn't at all, and I think that is highly respectable.🙂

    • @aquilamxp6267
      @aquilamxp6267 Год назад +3

      Thank you for those kind words ❤ I knew Majestica also, but Sabaton for quite a lot longer. However, what amazed me to a large degree is his deep knowledge of music and particularly how power metal works. So, I hope we can do a special on power metal with Tommy somewhere in the future, reflecting on the genre and its evolutions. He would be the perfect pick for that.

    • @elizabethofstainlesshearts
      @elizabethofstainlesshearts Год назад +2

      @@aquilamxp6267 Definitely! He's mentioned that he decided to become a musician when he was 9 when his dad (who also started teaching him guitar) introduced him to Gary Moore's music, getting him interested in rock and blues, and that he then found power metal at age 15 via bands like Stratovarius (a favorite of mine as well), Helloween and Hammerfall. He's also shown his interest in film soundtracks and, of course, 80s music in a variety of genres, in the albums he's written over the years and cover choices on RUclips. I'd think a lot of his deep understanding of music in general comes from not only learning to compose and play several instruments, but also in exposing himself to so many genres, and he has displayed a good deal of his musical brilliance in the ability to pass said genres through the lens of power metal in so many of his covers.
      ..So, yes - definitely agreed that Tommy would be an excellent choice for your power metal special, and I will definitely be excited to watch it!🙂

    couldn´t "The last stand" count as a medieval song?

    • @aquilamxp6267
      @aquilamxp6267 Год назад +1

      Early modern period. But early in that period as it happens in 1527. However, in this time period with rulers as Charles v and Francis I. State structures in both Habsburg lands such as the Staten generaal or in France as the parliament, as well as the use of standing armies, it is hard to consider this period as ‘medieval’. But good remark and indeed very close to the Middle Ages!
      It is actually the reason why the papal guard up to this date are still Swiss ‘mercenaries’.
      To be sure, there is quite some history between the Swiss and the Habsburg rulers as well as their Burgundian brand that goes back well into tje 14th century.

    I have 2 categories of music: Music I like and music I don't like. Sabaton are sat in the first category. Don't particularly care whether they technically fit a certain genre or not and ultimately who does? Gatekeeping a music genre is so pointless.

    • @aquilamxp6267
      @aquilamxp6267 Год назад

      in the interview, we were not as much gate keeping rather than having an interest in music. I find genres a good way of analyzing music and nerding out about that is just fun.

    Power Metal is Nerd Metal. War Nerds are still nerds. Butr Power Metal is more about the style not the content of the songs. Most power Metal Bands are about Vikings and thats more historic with mythology not just fantasy stuff.

    • @GRIMMGent
      @GRIMMGent  Год назад +1

      I don't know where you get your power metal from, but we'd love to hear about some of those power metal bands that are about vikings. Because we have a hard time thinking of much power metal bands that mostly sing about vikings.
      And power metal not just fantasy stuff? Probably at least half of the existing power metal bands sing more about fantasy things than anything else. Heck, it's what the genre actually is well-known for.
