Thank you American friends for learning from history and sharing with the world. - Greetings from Ontario (your honesty and diligence is greatly appreciated)
@@HistoryMysteryMan I was seven years old when it happened and it was the first time I watched the news. Ten years later I tried to get into the Port McNicol Inn to see Gordon Lightfoot but got refused for being too young.(Gordon was a local here) The hotel, the ships and the elevator are long gone but I still hear the ring of that tattle tale sound when I come down the hill.
Hello @keithbaker6931. I follow the Anderson on Marine Tracker - beautiful ship. Are you laying up in Toledo this year? Would love to take a tour and get some photos. Be safe out there!
My brother & I truly appreciate your presentations on the Fitz. Our grandfather retired from Columbia Transportation & sailed on the Crispin Oglebay; our grandparents lived in Oregon, OH. They were friends with Captain McSorley and his wife. My grandfather, to the best of my knowledge, knew Captain Darrell's uncle Grant.
Cptn Walton asked us to, so I will do so! Leave a comment that is. Amazing Videos! I love them. Thank you for putting them together for us to enjoy. And super thanks to Cptn Walton for his honesty and flavour he brings to the interviews.( that's how we spell flavour up in here in Canada, eh!)
Thanks guys for another great video covering the tragedy of the Mighty Fitz...this story touches so many on such deep levels that a movie should cover the entire event especially with first hand advisors like yourselves still on hand for your real deal input....thank you and God bless!
Great tribute! And as you say, "The Fitz is the Titanic of the Great Lakes!". so true. Loved the bow shot of the launch of the Arthur M. Anderson. Thanks to Capt. Darrell for all of his insight - what an awesome story teller.
Thanks so much for keeping this alive and the memories, I was 17 years old at the time and remember it at that time, especially when Gordon Lightfoot sang that song, it still hits me every time I here it, thanks again.
Very, very good stuff. The most comprehensive compendium of big Fitz information I've ever seen. My condolences to, Captain Walton on the loss of his uncle. RIP the 29.😊
I agree with you, Don. That's not the way I want to leave this planet . The thought of getting flipped upside down and crashing into the bottom of the lake is not pleasant . 48 years ago tonight, this tragedy played out . I always enjoy listening to you and Captain Darrell .

Outstanding. Once again you and Darrell have shined light on the darkest place in Great Lakes shipping history. Thank you both. It means so much to so many.
When I was a youngster I remember hearing the song Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald. I asked my father what the song was about, and he explained to me about what had happened to the ship and crew. It still fascinates me to this day hearing information and stories about this great ship and crew as well as other ships lost on the Great Lakes. I thoroughly enjoy watching your videos with Capt. I met Bruce Hudson's mother once at church in North Ridgeville. She told me who she was, and I remember her as being proud of her son, and how Gordon Lightfoot was very special in her life. I believe that she has now been reunited with them.

Darrell mentioned something like that to me...maybe getting something together at local libraries or something. Considering it. Thanks again, John. HMM
Hello HMM and Capt Darrell! Thank you for sharing this it is a sad time in history and one that was learned from. Capt Darrell speaking of riveted ships and welded ships- The Homer was seen to have had faults- welded- some that served on the Fitz said She creaked and groaned- welded- not to take away from the ppl who welded on Her- As a pressure vessels welder, If not properly prepped as in pre heating, post heating in both using a heat source such as a propane tiger torch to expel moisture from the steel, heat to desired temp , weld, and then using a tiger torch to gradually reduce heat to marry the atoms in a way that allows proper arrangement and no weak points once completed.Capt Darrell agreed, Hitting Caribou Shoal was part of Her demise. To find the Homer had stress cracks (all welded) and decommissioned because of. That does not speak against the welders who welded on the Fitz. It speaks about the 3 cargo holds in each the Fitz and Homer. Did both Sykes and Anderson < believe She has has 5? All welded vs Riveted? Each of those processes can be seen as sign of the times. Its always harder longer faster in the world of progress.Unfortunately safety standards were not a stringent as they are now maybe why no ship has been lost on the great lakes since the Fitz . God Bless all 29 souls on the mighty Fitz and their families. Thanks Again HMM, It is a real treat having Capt Darrell aboard.
Many thanks...and thanks for all your information...very informative. Yes...as I understand it, the Sykes and the Anderson have 5 cargo holds compared to the Fitz's 3. HMM
These videos about the sinking of the Edmund Fitzgerald is just incredible and informative!!! Capt Darrell Walton is just so exciting to listen to!!!!! Such an awesome person!!
Same situation with the captain of the Titanic. He was on his last voyage, before retiring. So tragic for Captain Smith and Captain McSorley. RIP to all the victims lost to the Great Lakes. 🙏 I was born and raised in Michigan my whole life and remember the Fitz all over the news.
I remeber listening to the song of the same name. When I discovered, years later, it was a real vessel I went down the rabbit hole looking for all the information I could. But it does not compare to boots on the ground beating the streets. Thank you, Sir: For your will to entertain and enlighten the rest of us, and for the future content I can't wait to see.
Love this video, my prayers are also with Capt McSorley and the crew of the Edmund Fitzgerald RIP 51st anniversary. Thank you for your service Captain Darrel.

Thanks David; we appreciate that. HMM
Wow...just one more voyage for each. So sad...thanks. HMM
Thanks...I really appreciate that. Your support means a lot to me...helps keep me inspired to keep going. HMM
