Blackie... the way we were taught in the Army... at least the way that "I" was taught with the old open top canteen stove was when we placed the cup on the stove, we put it on in the opposite kidney shape. I see everyone putting the cup with the kidney shape in the same direction, which makes the cup fall into the stove. Like I said, setting it on in the opposite direction is how I was taught, and I still do it that way these days. Also... the fuel we used was the blue trioxane. Just thought to throw this out to you. SFC (Ret) AL Williams
Blackie , way back in the 60s scouting taught us to coat the outside of the cup and frying pan or cook pot with a bar of Ivory soap. I've always done this and the soot never has been a problem for me. It works beautifully. Plus gives you suds when down at the creek. Usually just enough to warsh the utensils as well. Then rinse with fresh water and dry in the sun.
I really like the way you young fellows talk and share information and ideas. I like the way y'all watch one another's videos and promote their gear. It's enjoyable hearing y'all giving credit to others for their innovations. I believe I have found just the right place for me. Thanks for all you do.
Blackie, Great Video and Outstanding Information ,Thank You Sir for sharing your Vast Knowledge, Experience, Wisdom and Time, I Greatly Appreciate Your Ways Of Teaching. God Bless Y'all You and Mrs. Blackie.
Hey Blackie great video ! I just wanted to say I have a similar set-up , and I've added aluminum foil like you suggested . Behind the canteen cup , under the flap , I have also squeezed in a collapsible Sea To Summit cup which makes drinking hot beverages more practical while they're still warm , without burning your lips ; it also has measurements on it . Have a great day Sir !
👍 Good video. I have used the Pathfinder Canteen Cup set for years. As you said it is an excellent kit. Canterbury’s greatest contribution to camping is the production of very good gear at very reasonable prices. I have been buying from so long I remember when you called in Dave actually answered the phone. Having said that I was glad to hear you mention the old Canteen Shop. Rob Simpson doesn’t get enough credit for his development of gear, like the stove for this kit and the lid you demonstrated, that we still use today. In fact, when Dave went off to make the Dual Survival show Rob took over his store until Canterbury returned.
Good info as always. If you go to Lowe's in the area they sell for sale signs and get some peel and stick reflective tape. Cut a circle shaped piece and stick it on the top of the lid. It will make it easy to find your canteen at night and help keep the lid from getting lost.
Customising your gear is a great tip. I always carried a mismatched scout kit because someone would pick up pieces of my gear and took whatever waa left.
Blackie, interesting idea about painting the cup etc. I’ve thought about using thick aluminium from a aluminium foil barbecue dish a wind break and other things. Keep the videos coming, thank you
I got one of the original canteen sets from SRO, and hated the fold under cup handle. I could never get it to stay locked and not dump when I used it. I was really happy to get the butterfly handled cup, so now I have the complete set, two canteens, a stove, lid, and butterfly handles cup. SRO does have a lid like you want, it has a small d ring handle, strainer holes, and is recessed to lock into the cup. I suspect it would work like you want, I also suspect one could use the recess to pile coals on top to heat food similar to how one would a Dutch oven. I believe SRO offer the lid separately. By the way, the canteen cap is the exact same as the one on their round bottle if you need a spare.
I enjoyed the video and picked up some tips as always. I have been enjoying useing my Pathfinder canteen set since I got it but I may hafto pick up one with the bat wing Handel's as well and I will be looking forward to the new canteen cup cooking series.
Thanks mate for your video I am from Australia and I enjoy and take alot from your shows. I have the original canteen set and love it. Can not wait until you start the cooking videos I'm super excited
Great setup. I believe you could use automotive header paint as well if one wants too. I like to put something not easily duplicated by someone even by accident. Like attaching an old coin or small medallion to the lid. Indian head penny, buffalo head nickle or a silver wolf emblem.
Nice video Blackie. I have your last set up; nalgene canteen, surplus canteen cup/stove/lid, and mollie cover. Good enough for me so far. The stainless outfit looks real nice though. I plan to skrive my old USAF duty stations into the cup, like some WW2 guys used to do. Thanks!
Great video Blackie!! I have recently upgraded my canteen situation in my so called practice kit lol, its really just a kit that I keep ready to go in case of impromptu trips on the mtn behind my house. I use it for times when I want to just scout the area or try out different skills. But like you, I prefer to carry my bottle in a sling carry mode because of accessibility, that way I am not having to take my pack off every time I want to take a sip. What I bought was a complete set up off Amazon, the bottle, cup, lid and it came with a spork. But I didn't have a way to carry it, so I bought a waxed canvas foraging pouch with a shoulder sling and it has two pockets on the front as well, and it works beautifully!!
I have the older canteen cup set with the other handle. Looks like you don't have to snap the two butterfly handles together like on the military canteen, for it to stay solid? I missed the boat on those heavy cover canteen lids, I've been regretting that for a long time now. Don't understand why nobody makes them now. Hopefully Dave will. Can't wait for the cooking series.👍🏻
I’ve been running with Nalgene canteens for many years. I have recently purchased a Pathfinder canteen kit with the updated L handle cup. I’m considering another kit with this style cup as well.
Great video, great ideas 💡 THANKS SIR BLACKIE. I've gotta get me that military cover so I can carry mine on a belt rig. I purchased the kit w/ the bag from SRO just rescently. In my kit bag I have #1 thing... COFFEE packets , but I also take the individual lipton chicken-noodle-soup mixes and carry a couple packets of the envelope chicken (lit'l more protein and calories) ...Alan in 🇨🇱 which canteen cover is that, does it have a number or size that fits that 39oz SRO canteen ? I looked on Colemans site ???
Blackie, I would be interested in knowing how those measuring marks hold up with lots of use. I love measurement marks in cooking pots (takes much of the guesswork out), but if the marks scrub off, .....
I have the "kit" and this set. The kit still uses the L handle config last i saw.... part of the reason the stove isnt all that tight because the original design would "lock in" with the L handle
Blackie, Thanks! I am thinking of adding a tether to my pathfinder canteen cap. I am planing on; adding an eyelet to the cap, and attaching it to kit with a soft shackle. The question is; do I epoxy the eyelet to the out side of the cap, or do I attach one via a thru hole, nuts, lock/washers, and then seal it with food grade silicon?
Can you advise on which high-temp paint you recommend for stainless steel items? I have used an orbital palm/detail sander (and strips of sandpaper for the hard-to-reach spots) using 320 grit sandpaper. I have glass-bead blasted some other items, but with very thin stainless steel, the glass beads can warp some items. Just awaiting paint suggestions.
Hey Blackie! I’ve questioned if I should spray paint my kit as well. I was wondering, are you going to also spray paint the canteen as well? I’m assuming you’re going to boil in your canteen now that you have a metal canteen and not a plastic one. I didnt hear you mention if you where planning to or not I was just wondering if in fact you are going to also spray paint the canteen to make it easier to clean off ash and whatnot easier when you boil your water in the fire
Cleaning the lip around the opening can be difficult because of how it curls inward, unlike the SRO Bottle that is turned to the outside affording easy access to clean. A toothbrush helps to solve this issue. Otherwise it is a great piece of gear.
Hi Blackie, For the lid, I totally disagree with you. I use the Canteen stand upside down also with the cross stand for the cup stand. It make the cup more stable. For the canteen cover, Jolmo Lander sells them all complete with the sides pocket, a shoulder strap, anf the molle strap. Unfortunately, it's a chinese company. Thanks for the info.

This is the proper way. Much easier than fighting to separate them. Although, neither one is technically "wrong" if it works for you.
thank you for your service ! and yes set it backwards to lift it off easy
Tried turning it upside down?

Great kit, and it’s a great idea to customize it! I am so looking forward to this cooking series!

i have been using the canteen cup lid for several years and have really liked it i wish they still made this heavy one
@@BLACKIETHOMAS Agree 💯%❗️
Good video. 76 yrs and learning new things. God bless and keep ‘em coming
I mark my gear red and green cuz I had leftover paint from doing a Christmas scene for the elementary school 😅. Very easy to see in the field
nice

i have done that as well for many years i used what i could find or afford
I’m looking forward to the cooking series as I’ve just ordered one of these kits. Different handle on the cup though.

Outstanding information on the cup and canteen
thanks
@@BLACKIETHOMAS you are welcome my friend
You can paint the center circle of your canteen cap w/glow in the dark or hiviz paint then add your initials or 1 initial to mark your cap/canteen. 🤓
Tracks. Mors used to say leave your pot black because a black pot will boil much faster than a shiny one.
Thanks mate for your video I am from Australia and I enjoy and take alot from your shows. I have the original canteen set and love it. Can not wait until you start the cooking videos I'm super excited
Very cool!
Thanks, I just bought a SRO kit so I can play along with the new series!

sounds like a good set
Good video
Thanks Blackie
Thank you Blackie. I have also had problems with soot sticking to stainless steel and being difficult to clean. I will try your BBQ paint method.
Or rub soap on it before using
Glad to help
Good review Blackie, thanks for sharing, YAH bless !
My pleasure
Use ash from the fire that made the soot, loaded up onto your damp scrubbing pad, and the soot will disappear like magic.
Hey Blackie. Great video & info. As well as aluminium foil, I carry a couple of ‘oven roasting bags’ 🏴
Interesting. How do you use them?
good idea
@@mindfulicious Use them in the reflector oven that Blackie describes OR put food in them, then cook in a pot. Keeps things clean.
Great video! Maybe a flask. For cold days.
SRO sells the canteen lid. You mentioned they did not , unless l misunderstood. Thanks for your video.
yes they do sell a lid and its a good one mine is from years ago and is no longer made

perhaps you can ask your niece to create a sticker for the cap lid with either your logo or your initials so it's instantly recognisable
i will do that

Put a silver wolf on the top of your cap.

🤔 Don’t ask a man named Blackie why he paints his cook set black ! 🤣
lol cause i dont have any forest green bbq paint
Man that's a decent set up some tin foil you got it made
Well, I graduated from this set. So, I got something for you 👍. I'll see ya at GatherThing 😁. 2 is one 1 is none😁.
i will be there
Blackie Pathfinder does make a lid for the canteen cup. I have several. They fit the usgi cup aswell.
Do not care for the butterfly handle cup. Not as versatile as the L handle cup with the bushings.
