    Transalpina us an adjective referring to something or someone 'beyond the Alps' from the point of view of Italy, so it means 'french' (or rarely 'german')

    Regarding Gesualdo never being convicted for murder, here's a passage from the Gesualdo Hex, a book I highly recommend: "...custom held that a cuckolded male, and particularly a Neapolitan prince, not only had the right but the duty to protect the honor of the family name by murdering the guilty parties."
