That's just one of many things I liked so much about Iroh, he was well rounded and understanding but also knew when it was time to give up on something that could bear no fruit from your efforts. Some people, no matter how hard you try, are so set in their ways that they end up destroying you with them if you stick around for too long. A good example is from Avatar Kiyoshi with the Earth kingdom ruler (sorry forgot his name). She warned him time and time again that he would be destroyed if he did not change his mind. Now I have to give him props, not only did he stand up to the Avatar but also for standing his ground even as it fell out from under him. That takes balls! But it shows just how foolish being so devoted to someone or something to absurdity can be. Iroh knew this... RIP Mako, you are greatly missed.
@Tattle Boad Pride is not opposed to humility, I don't see it like that. Arrogance is opposed to humility. I also don't understand why you're suddenly talking about egoism? My idea is more that arrogance is pride without self-esteem, and self-hatred is humility without self-esteem.
@Tattle Boad "{According to the Oxford Dictionary, pride is defined as “the quality of having an excessively high opinion of oneself or one's importance; whereas," confidence is defined as “a feeling of self-assurance arising from an appreciation of one's own abilities or qualities.”}" www.google.com/url?sa=t&source=web&rct=j&url=haitiantimes.com/2016/10/23/pride-vs-confidence-whats-the-difference/%23:~:text%3DAccording%2520to%2520the%2520Oxford%2520Dictionary,one%27s%2520own%2520abilities%2520or%2520qualities.%25E2%2580%259D&ved=2ahUKEwjhhoO0h4jrAhVBKH0KHSBUCHwQFjABegQIEBAG&usg=AOvVaw1lvRfH5qoWHd18_DBxFC6_ Therefore there is a difference between pride and confidence. Confidence is a feeling and understanding of your worth in abilities where as pride is thinking of yourself as superior. One can NOT have pride without confidence, but one can have confidence without pride.
That resonated. I met a lady who lived on portobello road in London back in the day. She gave me some advice on perspectives. When you enter into an argument with someone. Imagine that the two of you are sat on opposite sides of this massive beach ball, sat in a deck chair. The ball is so big you can’t see the other side or someone on the other side. One side of the ball is blue. One is orange. You can sit in your chair on your side of the ball and argue ad infinitum over the ball being blue! But. For them. It’s orange. It’s blue! It’s orange! .... It is only when you get up out of your chair and walk around to the other side that you can see the situation from the other persons perspective. And in doing so, getting up, moving around and seeing it from the other persons side, you also free up your chair for others. ✌️
This is one of my favorite and most impactful quotes by Iroh: *_"You must never give in to despair._* *_Allow yourself to slip down that road and you surrender to your lowest instincts._* *_In the darkest times, hope is something you give yourself._* *_That is the meaning of inner strength."_*
@@barbershopbible no no that doesn't mean wishful thinking, their talking about being an optimist, seeing light in the darkness, and working towards self improvement so you know that things can be better if you just put the effort
I remember someone once saying that "The quietest acts of humility are greater than the most boisterous acts of pride," and also "Humility is not the act of thinking less of oneself but of thinking of oneself less."
@@Xgarbil well if it's a loud act of humility it might very well be because you want the attention unless it's part of some sort of apology I suppose. that wasnt quite the reason, i think atla was overall just rly rly good but kora was cool too, seeing more of the avatar world, where ppl tried to make it as much enjoyable is better than nothing
@@Shizuka136 yes. Even though I like the last airbender more, I have to admit I enjoyed many Korra episodes. (Not UnaVatoo though. Never🤣) But now the writer that made avatar cool is cowriting the dragon prince, I have the feeling this show could be the last airbender's reincarnation 😁

You know this show is amazing when there's a deeper philosophy to be found. The fact that this was introduced to us as children and now that we're older we can look back on it like this is awesome.
This actually fits in perfectly with the growth mindset, how life is a constant journey and you never stop learning until the end of your life, there's always gonna be more to learn
The fact that that voice actor of Iroh was dying due to cancer as he was making The Last Airbender is heart wrenching. He was something of a healthy father figure to millions as he suffered from his own failing health. RIP Makoto Iwamatsu. 🙏
What's amazing about Iroh's character is that he started out completely differently to how we see him in the show. He was all about pride, a warmongering general, believing the lies he was told...after his son's death, his world collapsed, and everything he knew was a lie. He then remade himself over time into one of the wisest and strongest people in the world, and certainly one of the most enlightened characters ever in a TV show. True power, as it turns out, comes from knowledge and compassion.

I love Iroh. he is the best character in the whole series, in my opinion. It's really interesting how his arc has completely before the series. I love his advice and it really does teach you about morality and life.
@@ilke3192 kinda reminds me of how people speak of me when i act. I don't rush into things, i take my time and think, ponder, i ask questions and seek external knowledge instead of any self truth i can tell myself. People say i am scared but really i'm not sure of anything, cautious or uncertain you could say, how can any person be so? I don't jump into relationships, i wanna know the person i'm interested in as much as possible (those that rush into love almost always end up heartbroken or alone). Let's say you never doubt your skills in an area of life, then you fail. You failed because you thought you could do no wrong. You didn't wonder if another person knew better and could give a better solution. Now lets say another man is confident in his skills and attempts a similar thing, but instead of going in like he knows everything, he finds that he can't find a clear solution from his experience. He accepts that he is uncertain, it's human to be so, and tries to understand more in order to resolve the problem. Even if he fails it was not due to his ego, but rather his acceptance of uncertainty offered a better result(albeit never a gaurantee). To never be cautious is to be a fool, When i have been uncertain of things, i seek to relieve myself of such feelings by seeking wisdom, and even when i fail i don't feel bad because i tried the best i could, i wasn't stupid in my approach to life's occurances. But when i was shamed into being "scared" and i went in head first i almost always failed. Gotta learn from past mistakes or you'll forever repeat them. As was said in the video, the US has a terrible human mentality when it comes to politics, there is no middle ground, no cooperation, no compromise, no humbleness in ones beliefs. There is democrats or republicans, liberals or conservatives. This YES/NO mentality rejects any chance of deeper understanding, of better decisions. Those that claim independent thought are put down as stupid or ignorant on both sides as well. Foolishness can adopt any form imaginable, and it's up to people to figure out when they are being foolish and when humility is necessary. The reason such ideas like humility is almost always beneficial, or an excess of certainty leads to unseen consequences exist for so long because they have truth to them. Being wise isn't about knowing everything there is to know, it's to know oneself, to know one's lack in anything, and the understanding that there are things you should seek external knowledge from, to be uncertain but for the reason of being better than the certain man who can never learn.
@@Adrian-qr6gk Thanks, but how does it explain me 'missing the point of the quote' ? I just pointed out that the word 'always' suggests certainty, which is contradictory to the quote itself. My issue was not with what the quote is trying to tell, but rather why it insists on choosing the contradictory phrases in itself. How is this 'not understanding the point of the quote'?
Considering the subject matter I'd like to share this: "War does not determine who is right, only who is left." - I have no idea who, and I kind of prefer it like that.
Admiral Murphy That quote’s from Bertrand Russell, I think. I remember seeing this quote and his name in the original Cod4 Modern warfare death screens lol

I actually meant to say "what Iroh's fathers started, he would conclude". They started the war and he could've finished it. But ig it wasn't very clear since a lot of people are saying I got this wrong
It was one of the last best shows out of Nickelodeon, next to Drake & Josh, ICarly and The Fairly Odd Parents. These shows taught us things. Avatar: the last airbender taught us wisdom and humility. Drake & josh taught us that no matter what crud happens in life, brotherly love always prevails. ICarly taught us to always be loyal to your friends. Fairly odd parents encourages us to be wild with our imagination and creativity. (This is my taking from these shows.)
It's hard to believe the Iroh we know and love was once almost just like the Ozai we hate. My mom taught me to judge the person you see before you now, not who they used to be. Because bad people are capable of doing good things, and good people are capable of doing bad things. Even if someone hurt you, don't take it personally. Look at them from a point of sympathy, empathy, and understanding. Because the cycle of abuse is self perpetuating and hurt people hurt people. My mom is very far from a perfect person, but I'll always value this lesson and pass it on to anyone who will listen.
I'm listening, and your mom is very wise. I got beat up by police officers once - while I was handcuffed. They broke my jaw and grabbed me by my liver or kidney. That was years ago, so according to your mom's wisdom (if they've changed, that is) I shouldn't judge them today, but I just can't accept them or forgive them. Their "boss" lied and told me they were perfectly within their right to do anything they wanted, even though I was pacified.
Pride is never something that you want. It's okay to feel good about what you accomplish, but not pride. Pride, at it's root, is enmity. It is enmity towards others, a belief that you are better than them, that you are better than everyone. There is a reason why pride always comes before the fall, because if you were humble, if you had the humility to learn from others, to see yourself as just one man in a sea of humanity, and that everyone around you has something they can teach you, you would never have put yourself into a position where you could fall. If you are willing to learn from others, to humble yourself, and become the student, there is nothing that you cannot accomplish, nothing you cannot learn, nothing you cannot do. The moment you believe yourself better than others, though, is the moment that you have truly lost yourself.
I don't believe it wise to equate humility to the complete removal pride. Pride in excess amounts is certainly dangerous, but if you completely snuff self pride out, what remains is depression, anguish, and despair.
That is not what pride has to mean, the definition of pride is "a feeling or deep pleasure or satisfaction derived from one's own achievements, the achievements of those with whom one is closely associated, or from qualities or possessions that are widely admired." What you describe is an extreme form of pride and that is dangerous, just like everything else when taken to an extreme.
Avatar is so deep in meanings and morals, and you make it even better, I just really wish everyone took onboard all this and actually started applying this to the real world such as presidents and world leaders, the world would be a better place.
I watch this video time to time to cleanse my soul. It's not just an analysis about iroh, it gives much more valid points about things from our lives. I can literally think about my own life and certain situations while watching and it gives me a deeper look into things. It helps me adjust myself to those situations and become a better person.
I really want a mini series, comic, or a book about Iroh's past. His upbringing, his family, him after Ozai took the throne, how he knew so much about spirits(so much he could see them), the dragons, TEA! There's so much I wish we could know about him
Never thought about this but Iroh probably saw a shit ton of himself in Zuko. He knew the self-reevaluation and changes before and after Ba Sing Se was the same things that Zuko would benefit most from, but he never preached "This is what you should do because this is how I did it" to him. Iroh was always roundabout and made Zuko have to learn those things his own way applied to his own destiny, and he knew that was the right move.
i think he saw a lot of his own son in Zuko too. i mean, when his actual dad's a ruthless pridful dictator why not your Humble uncle be the next best thing as a rolemodel?
@@TheEel228 Oh yeah. Especially when you add the fact that his son died never seeing what the fire nation was doing was wrong and never found his own destiny. Lieu Ten and season 1 Zuko were probably a lot a like. A lot of Irohs dedication to helping Zuko find his own path came from his regret of failing to help his son do that. I think that's what he was alluding to when he says "I wish I could have helped you" in Story of Iroh
U know, now that I think of it, iroh is master of all 4 elements by using tea. The leaf is like anything in the world, its connected to the earth. While the water helps to navigate the leaf, the fire helps the water to extract the juice from the leaf and infuse it with the water (think about this one when iroh study the water benders and created the technique on how to redirect lightning) . And air helps to cool down the tea to the perfect temperature for him to drink it, basically all 4 elements in one . The avatar isn't the only one that can master all the elements. EDIT: Most people dont know this but uncle iroh is one of the most powerful and skillful benders of the series because of his knowledge of all 4 nations.Think about it this way, you were born with a type of bending ( doesnt matter which one) whats your goal ? to train, to learn your culture, become stronger with each passing day and be the best. Now whats the goal of the avatar? not just master all 4 elements, but to learn and knowledge other cultures, techniques, different fightning styles etc, what stopping you to do the same ? who says thats only for the avatar to do ?why stop on what u learn of your own culture and not gain more knowledge from others. If you have an open mind you can see all the posibilities beyond your limitations. You can get more stronger, smarter, faster, wiser. You can learn weak spots of any bender and use anything around you for your advantage. I think this is what Iroh was trying to teach zuko in the first and second season. EDIT#2 - this came from random users from the fandom. Iroh basically has all the elements in one. Water - how redirect lighting. Earth - Mastering Neutral jing. Rember when he gave himself up in book 2 and escape during the solar eclipse? He waited for the right moment to strike. (Neutral jing is the Key of earthbending) Fire - He mastered Lightning and knew the all secrets of firebending by the dragons. Air - Breath of Fire. Airbenders can keep their body temperature warm by crontolling their breathing. Thats why we never saw aang used a coat in book 1. By iroh studying the airbenders, he created the breath of fire, adding to the fact that fire comes from the breath and not muscle. (Sorry is my English is bad)
And that's why his tea is so good! He uses his knowledge of all the elements! That's why he's so angry at Zuko when he says that tea is just leaves mixed with water!
Believe it or not iroh is actually the man that I look up to now more then ever, he left everything and gained more then he could ever own and I love that
"It's the people who believe they're less than perfect who are the ones who are able to acknowledge their evil potential" That should earn an "amen" from every Christian in the house.
@@brittoncain5090 And yet, many continue to subscribe to the idea that they are some how better than their fellow humans just because they pay lip service to a being they only half believe in once a week. The true tragedy of Christianity in the 21st century is that people have forgotten Jesus is a symbol of humility first and foremost. And they do not honor eachother or the Maker in forgetting this.
I still believe that because Iroh’s core beliefs had changed and he seen the dragons. That he was able to firebend during the day of black sun eclipse and broke out.
"The only thing better than finding something you are looking for is finding something you weren't looking for at a great bargain!" Iroh. literally use this all the time. Love Iroh's quotes
I think there's a pretty big difference between being proud of your accomplishments and being prideful as a personality trait. Satisfaction with how far you've come must be tempered by a desire to be better, yes. But without satisfaction, one feels empty, and may lose motivation to improve. Humility for the sake of humility, tearing yourself down because you're afraid to take any joy in being, that can be maladaptive too.
brieoncrackers My belief is that you don't need any satistaction for yourself when you learn to take it from others or from normal life. It is also the same with happiness, if you learn to be happy and satisfied with things such as nice weather, victory of your favourite sportsman or marriage of your best friend, it can fill you to the top ;)
@@tomassklenar8277 humility is often taken to mean being unable to accept compliments too, so other people telling you you're good at things wouldn't help. A complete lack of satisfaction with oneself as one is can be associated with depression and potentially suicide, and people telling you you're actually pretty great doesn't necessarily penetrate that kind of deprecation.
@@tomassklenar8277 you can't always rely on other people to keep you happy. More people feel like they have too few friends than ever before. We don't have the social support we need. Until culture gets better, we have to survive.
Oh so similar to what I have heard people say but with Iroh instead of Mr. Rodgers. I have heard that people say "Be the person Mr. Rodgers knows you can be" as an insult towards criminals. And many of them actually get a little teary if they still have a heart.
I was arguing with a friend almost every time we saw each other for a year. It was advice from Iroh that made me realize how we were hurting each other, and I was able to start talking instead of yelling at him. That is the only reason we are still friends today. Iroh is a damn hero if you ask me.

Once you realize that we're all connected and understand that the Universe flows threw all of us you will understand the natural flow of life and love and why we all need each other. Perfection and power are overrated once you truly understand true balance and love. And what it means to be truly free.
You're quite right, about the natures of pride and humility. It took me a long time to learn this, but as time went on Iroh has become more and more of an inspiration to my way of thinking and the kind of person I want to become. I'm still pretty prideful, but I try not to discount the value of others' opinions. The wisdom of others has been the primary way in which I have learned, as I am also cautious and prefer only to act when I have prepared to the point of surety in whatever I do. Of course, this in and of itself led to a degree of stagnation within myself for a long time. Instead of water, I became like a rock; strong at face value and hardy, but also rigid, inflexible and brittle. Thusly I began to erode. Anyway, the point I initially wanted to make when I began typing this comment is that both Iroh and yourself seem quite wise, and I thank you for this perspective. Best wishes, ma dude.
Pride can never leave you but when you mast how understand it you become the master of it as in I understand that too I am very prideful because I feel my value is size as a aunt but try to explain and try be who I want to be but hard
@@avthendiarie9955 Pride itself usually isn't a bad thing. It can be a great motivator. But you're correct, it is best to master it so it doesn't become arrogance. Once it gets to that point it can hold you back in many ways. At least when it comes to dealing with other people in daily life. You're also right that it's hard to control that pride in ourselves. It took me a long time to even recognize it, let alone control it. There's times still, that I don't control it so well haha. But we live and learn, and do our best :^)
Something that occured to me only recently in my lectures at school. So many of my peers are almost afraid to answer a question or ask one, lest they be thought stupid in the asking or answering. Yet answering right or wrong does not make out anything against one's intelligence. Being wrong is an opportunity for clarification and learning. There is no shame in being wrong. And if you truly wish to learn, you must first accept how little you know. To learn is to be humble.
@@jessesmith4167 while I can understand why one may be hesitant in asking or answering a question, I agree with you. "He who asks a question is a fool for 5 minutes. He who keeps silent is a fool for life." I think that was the adage at least. Adage, proverb, not sure which is the more applicable term there. It can be difficult or even painful at times to learn some of life's lessons. In the case of not asking a question during a lecture, I guess the peers who stay quiet may not want to stretch the lecture into an even longer one. In other cases, it may be that they simply don't want to appear stupid or inadequate to the rest of the class. I was the goofy nerd through most of my time in school so I didn't often bother with such thoughts. Added bonus; sometimes the question or answer may stump the teacher and help them gain a new understanding by facing the same problem from a different perspective. Even better, when the learning is reciprocal, I'd say.
100% agree with your views on politics. Some people make it into such a big "us vs them" game that they flat out refuse to listen to and properly comprehend what "they" are even trying to say. Instead they go and circle-jerk in echo chambers ganging up on strawmen they created to embody their respective political counterparts.
If you think about it Zuko and Iroh share the same story. They both grew up as the first born prince, indoctrinated into the overly prideful fire nation. They believed in their country and were on track to become the next fire lord untill they lost something. For zuko it was his honor and for iroh it was his son. This loss caused them to lose their claim to the throne which resulted in their path to humility and rediscovery, which ultimately led them to aid the avatar in defeating the fire lord.
Iroh’s father didn’t start the war. His grandfather did. Still, this was very wholesome and I congratulate you on spreading the truth effectively through a wonderful video!
Cuz of Iroh I got the perfect contrast between pride and humility. I used to go for the "I want to be the very best" to "there is someone that's always gonna be better than you. I'm thriving to be that someone." It keeps me motivated to keep going but it also displays to that I'm a person who still feels the need to be above others to satisfy my pride and that I can be prideful in the things I want too.
Can Netflix make a show about the life and times of Iroh? I am curious to know what happened to his wife? mother of his son. I want to see if Iroh and Ozi's childhoods mirrored Zuko and Azula. How did Iroh get to the spirit world etc
...and show how he passed the ancient firebending test of Ran and Sha like Aang and Zuko did, or how he earned the nickname "Dragon of the West," and other things...
John Walker passing the dragons test was how he got the name “dragon of the west” you got the name dragon by killing a dragon, that is why they went extinct. Iroh went out to kill the remaining dragons (or to find them and protect them idk) but instead was deemed worthy by them and left them alone, but telling everyone he killed them so nobody would go looking for any more dragons.
@@michaelpugh2617 Well yeah, I knew that part, but I just meant like seeing an episode where Iroh even stumbles upon the ancient people guarding the place and the remaining dragons in them, as well as how he managed to figure out how to pass the test. In the episode where Aang and Zuko did all of this, Zuko mentioned to Aang that no one had been there in centuries when Aang cried out for help after they fell in the temple trap. In that episode, we also see how they accomplished all this, and I thought it might be cool to see a story of Iroh's version of this adventure.

@@AnaVanilla /sarcasm/ Well a humble and intelligent man such as myself are above the need to "sound humble" since I know my self to be humble and thus have no need to flaunt it over the likes of you. /sarcasm/
I love how they used fire bending and made Iroh’s philosophy. I felt connected to the fire bending message because I have a bad habit of not controlling my high energy, passionate personality, which often made me unaware of how I hurt others, physically and emotionally. It really meant a lot to me that they taught that control and humility in this way. Even with a trait seen as negative (passion/fire bending), you can use it for good if you don’t have that prideful mentality.
Best line of video-"No religion Political opinion Or even success in life Makes u a better person than someone else. Period. Dot. Finish. End of discussion."
I find myself very sentimental & emotional whenever I watch or listen to Iroh’s videos. Throughout the years I’ve carried the wisdom & teachings of Iroh with me wherever I go. He has become the father I needed & I am eternally grateful for it
When I was a kid I enjoyed the show now I admire the wisdom that embedded in the show. The wisdom of the character iroh is profound that it takes a spiritual person to understand the meaning that's hiding out in his words.
"When pride comes, then comes disgrace, but with humility comes wisdom." Honestly, the Bible regards pride as mostly a sin. Not trying to turn this into a sermon. I'm just saying your opinion has corroboration. You also have that concept in other religions as well
As far as I know, the bible says that pride is the worst sin. The rest of the sins are not ranked, so they may be equally bad, but pride is over all of them.
I don't even know speak english yet but when I watched the whole video with the music of the hunter x hunter and the words of wisdom of the uncle Iroh I just fell in love. You earned 1 more subscribe and I hope that anything that the I wrotte here was right.
I am a grown man and I've had a lot of anger inside of me suddenly that wasn't there before. It's not normal for me. I've been thinking about how I can fix this, what's wrong with me, what I can do.. and immediately I thought of Zuko, and Iroh, and how he became such a new man, but still himself. So I searched "Avatar on Anger" - and found this. - This is absolutely beautiful. I think that I'm going to take Iroh's advice, and help myself by helping others. I feel like I am ready for a change, and I have never regretted giving selflessly. Thank you for making this. You just helped a very lost man find his way back to a path forward. Amazing video.
Avatar The Last Airbender: Bending is not a weapon, but one's soul's extension, thus it should not be used as a weapon. Avatar Legend of Korra explaining bending: Lion turtles gave hunters bending so they could have uncontested firepower over spirits and other creatures ???
I find the difference being the time that has passed. The lion turtles gave them bending so they could fight back. But as time moved forward, so did the ideologies surrounding bending. It become as it is during ATLA because of this passage of time.
I believe the purpose was actually to defend themselves against dark or harmful spirits rather than to attack, but there are always going to be people who abuse the power they gain or are given
No lie I can see from the outside that you creators are getting hit bad. I know this takes so much of your time to make but wow it’s such good content. :D I hope things change making it easier for you here on YT :c
Love this up till the end where you apologized, no apologies needed. You did a great job brother. Thank you for this, I needed something like this today.
This vid honestly changed my outlook on life, revisiting one of my favourite shows of all time. Remembering watching the episodes as they came out, I never thought much, I was a young boy. I go back and watch them now, and it's amazing how much wisdom you can get from a kids show. Shame it had to end, it will forever be in my heart.
This is the main lesson I had to learn throughout my life in the 2010s. My maturity throughout that decade could make a flipping anime. But with a different plot. Iroh was always my favorite character. But at this point. He's one of my all time favorite, for any show.
"The fire nation..." * miyazaki music starts playing * Me: uhm. Wait.. "Pride is what keeps us ignorant..." * kung fu panda music starts playing * Me: No. Wait. That's illegal.
What I loved most about Iroh's message of humility is that it showed the self loving version of humility, and not the self loathing version of humility that is all too common. When I had depression I definitely had a warped view of pride/humility; self confidence equated with pride and self hatred equated with humility. I thought I was being humble with my constant negative thoughts about myself, when in reality it was just the chemical imbalance in my brain flipping pride on it's head. I viewed myself as less than compared to everyone else, and it took a lot of introspection to learn to view myself as the person my loved ones saw me as. That's why Iroh and Zuko's arc always struck a chord, because Iroh not only helped Zuko defeat the prideful course his father set him on, but guided Zuko to love himself again, and in doing that Zuko became the person Iroh always knew he was deep down inside.
@@2yoyoyo1Unplugged Ursa her name and Iroh is understand with Ursa's reason why she poisoned Azulon because Ozai won't think twice to kill his first son, Zuko for the throne.
When a RUclips video makes you realize the pride you carry around with yourself, is your weakness not that you are just better or worse than others. Thank you. May you be blessed.
I think Iroh developed his wisdom prior to the death of Lu Ten because Jeong Jeong and him would have known each other in the army and also him sparring the dragons. How he became the Iroh we know is confusing because he mustve been good when he was younger but was still marching on Ba Sing Se.
Yea that whole part is really confusing. I think I said I hope they clear that in the live action in a video. He was obviously not opposed to the war but he most likely wasnt as ruthless as ozai. I think it's safe to assume that he did change after his son's death considering he had no desire for power anymore
You are missing the point, Iroh was very much like Zuko when he was young, a good kid living a destiny someone else wanted him to follow, his wisdom also come from his mistakes, for which is the primal source of wisdom, trial and error, we are not perfect, no one is, we should always strive to learn something from every mistake we make, the question Iroh made to Zuko when he was about to capture/free Appa, was a question he made to himself once his son died, "Are you seeking your own destiny or the destiny someone else wants you to follow?" His only son died because of a destiny someone else had put for him, his own son died because of his mistakes, and that's when his change was completed, he was born good, but not perfect, he had no "uncle" to advise him, he had to learn everything on his own throughout his entire life, he saw himself in Zuko, also, he looked at Zuko like a son, he wanted that Zuko followed a different path, for he had suffered enough already.
I suspect that in his youth Iroh was more of a dilettante. He was a dabbler in wisdom from all over the world, but was still a Fire Nation chauvinist at heart. His privileged upbringing as crown prince probably made him more willfully ignorant of the ills of the Fire Nation, even though his disposition was far removed from his ruthless brother. Perhaps, like a young Sozin, he believed that Fire Nation progress would be a gift to the world, regardless of whether or not they wanted it. In a way, this mindset could have been even more insidious than Ozai's, had it continued. And then Lu Ten died, and for the first time he was forced to confront the reality of the war for everyone who wasn't a princeling bending prodigy, and he walked away from all of it.
This makes me cry. I am such a weak and vulnerable person who is prideful without realizing it. I feel terrible for who I am at times. Thank you for helping me realize this.

RIP Mako, you are greatly missed.

pride is concerned with who is right, humility is concerned with what is right
@Tattle Boad I don't think humility should involve self-hatred or that pride should involve arrogance. There's a self-esteem issue here.
@Tattle Boad Pride is not opposed to humility, I don't see it like that. Arrogance is opposed to humility.
I also don't understand why you're suddenly talking about egoism?
My idea is more that arrogance is pride without self-esteem, and self-hatred is humility without self-esteem.
@Tattle Boad Did I say the two didn't go with each others?
@Tattle Boad Do you think someone can be confident without being arrogant?
@Tattle Boad "{According to the Oxford Dictionary, pride is defined as “the quality of having an excessively high opinion of oneself or one's importance; whereas," confidence is defined as “a feeling of self-assurance arising from an appreciation of one's own abilities or qualities.”}"

Therefore there is a difference between pride and confidence. Confidence is a feeling and understanding of your worth in abilities where as pride is thinking of yourself as superior. One can NOT have pride without confidence, but one can have confidence without pride.
“Pride is not what makes ourselves proud but what prevents us from being proud of others”

There is a saying - The wise always seem so uncertain. The foolish are always so sure of themselves.
Which, I believe, is contradictory, as this saying is like a certain statement, including ambitious word 'always'... :d
@@ilke3192 I believe you missed the point of the quote
@@malachai18zbz22 Would you care to explain?

It's hard to believe the Iroh we know and love was once almost just like the Ozai we hate.
My mom taught me to judge the person you see before you now, not who they used to be. Because bad people are capable of doing good things, and good people are capable of doing bad things.
Even if someone hurt you, don't take it personally. Look at them from a point of sympathy, empathy, and understanding. Because the cycle of abuse is self perpetuating and hurt people hurt people.
My mom is very far from a perfect person, but I'll always value this lesson and pass it on to anyone who will listen.
Don’t treat people for who they are , but for who they could be
I'm listening, and your mom is very wise.
Wow very good insight!
I don't believe it wise to equate humility to the complete removal pride. Pride in excess amounts is certainly dangerous, but if you completely snuff self pride out, what remains is depression, anguish, and despair.
Pride may come before the fall. But without it you'd never climb.

(Neutral jing is the Key of earthbending)
Fire - He mastered Lightning and knew the all secrets of firebending by the dragons.
Air - Breath of Fire. Airbenders can keep their body temperature warm by crontolling their breathing. Thats why we never saw aang used a coat in book 1. By iroh studying the airbenders, he created the breath of fire, adding to the fact that fire comes from the breath and not muscle.

I'd pay for that.
When Iroh grab's Zukko in the white lotus tent, hugs and forgives him made me cry like a little kid. one of the great animated series of all time
Even now it hits so hard in the best way
*We cant concern ourselves with what was, we must act on what is* ~Iroh
sounds like someone running from his past.
After I reconquer Ba Sing Se, I'm going to reconquer my tea shop! (flips the White Lotus Tile) And I'm going to play Pai Sho every day. -Iroh with the most heart shattering smile.
You really be having these legendary Soundtrack in your video xD HxH, Howl´s moving castle and even Kung fu Panda lul
Once you realize that we're all connected and understand that the Universe flows threw all of us you will understand the natural flow of life and love and why we all need each other. Perfection and power are overrated once you truly understand true balance and love. And what it means to be truly free.
Well, seems we have a grey jedi on our hands :P
Yes once you realize
Thanks! I wish you the best too!
I've always loved how iroh is just so philosoper someone whos only goal is to help people in life since he can't help himself
Really? I could've sworn his father was Sozin

That sounds healthy as hell.
You go, dude!
@@chrissi975 Thank you bro 😁✊🏾
The need to be above others sounds rather unhealthy. Why not have the need to constantly strive to be better than yourself?
@@dang579 because I'm a really competitive person and like competing allot
Can Netflix make a show about the life and times of Iroh? I am curious to know what happened to his wife? mother of his son. I want to see if Iroh and Ozi's childhoods mirrored Zuko and Azula. How did Iroh get to the spirit world etc
Dani Alexandria it was part of nickelodeon at the time I'm not sure they continued after kaara
...and show how he passed the ancient firebending test of Ran and Sha like Aang and Zuko did, or how he earned the nickname "Dragon of the West," and other things...
AHHHH
John Walker passing the dragons test was how he got the name “dragon of the west” you got the name dragon by killing a dragon, that is why they went extinct. Iroh went out to kill the remaining dragons (or to find them and protect them idk) but instead was deemed worthy by them and left them alone, but telling everyone he killed them so nobody would go looking for any more dragons.
@@michaelpugh2617
Well yeah, I knew that part, but I just meant like seeing an episode where Iroh even stumbles upon the ancient people guarding the place and the remaining dragons in them, as well as how he managed to figure out how to pass the test.
Your musical choices for this video wrapped all this good information In a frame that drew me in. When interstellar came on. I was hooked.
Thank you
“ In the darkest times, hope is something you give yourself, that is the meaning of inner strength. “
The smartest people are often the most humble, as the more you know the more you know, the more you understand your own ignorance.
Which is why I am one of the humblest people in the world 😁

I actually learned that in my political science course LOL
Iroh-nically your comment didn’t sound humble at all tho
@@AnaVanilla that was the point...
@@AnaVanilla /sarcasm/ Well a humble and intelligent man such as myself are above the need to "sound humble" since I know my self to be humble and thus have no need to flaunt it over the likes of you. /sarcasm/
As someone who has been struggling with humility, thank you for this.
Best line of video-"No religion
Political opinion
Or even success in life
Makes u a better person than someone else.
Period. Dot.
"When pride comes, then comes disgrace,
but with humility comes wisdom."
Honestly, the Bible regards pride as mostly a sin. Not trying to turn this into a sermon. I'm just saying your opinion has corroboration. You also have that concept in other religions as well
Actually the Bible did say to be proud of yourself and the lord but don’t let ignorance blind you.
Splitting that hair pretty fine, andy
As far as I know, the bible says that pride is the worst sin.
The rest of the sins are not ranked, so they may be equally bad, but pride is over all of them.
I don't even know speak english yet but when I watched the whole video with the music of the hunter x hunter and the words of wisdom of the uncle Iroh I just fell in love. You earned 1 more subscribe and I hope that anything that the I wrotte here was right.
Props for choosing the hunter hunter song. Perfectly suits the script
Avatar Legend of Korra explaining bending: Lion turtles gave hunters bending so they could have uncontested firepower over spirits and other creatures
???
“from the era before the avatar, we bend not the elements, but the energy within”
-Lion turtles
Korra: it’s reckon time! :D
I find the difference being the time that has passed. The lion turtles gave them bending so they could fight back. But as time moved forward, so did the ideologies surrounding bending. It become as it is during ATLA because of this passage of time.
it’s why The Legend of Korra sucked
I believe the purpose was actually to defend themselves against dark or harmful spirits rather than to attack, but there are always going to be people who abuse the power they gain or are given
It's not a retcon... lion turtle gave them bending them the animals and the moon thaught them how to use as an extension of themselves
I hate you don’t get enough attention. Genuinely amazing video man. Please keep up the great work :)
It's hard out here in these RUclips streets. Nevertheless thanks for the encouragement!

You're welcome. I apologized because it wasnt the type of video my subscribers are used to seeing not for the content
I just started re watching the show and now it’s better than when I was a little kid 😢
This is the main lesson I had to learn throughout my life in the 2010s. My maturity throughout that decade could make a flipping anime. But with a different plot. Iroh was always my favorite character. But at this point. He's one of my all time favorite, for any show.
Gotta say amazing music choices
Than you for that, you gave me a different perspective I’ve never thought of. Peace and blessing to you

Hahah, just when the music started, you comment came into view. Why does this keep happening to me lol😂
Iroh father died by an assassin in the comics tho and there was a letter “wrote” by him making his brother the fire lord

When a RUclips video makes you realize the pride you carry around with yourself, is your weakness not that you are just better or worse than others. Thank you. May you be blessed.
Iroh is one of the best, most thoughtfully written characters ever written and seen on television
You are missing the point, Iroh was very much like Zuko when he was young, a good kid living a destiny someone else wanted him to follow, his wisdom also come from his mistakes, for which is the primal source of wisdom, trial and error, we are not perfect, no one is, we should always strive to learn something from every mistake we make, the question Iroh made to Zuko when he was about to capture/free Appa, was a question he made to himself once his son died, "Are you seeking your own destiny or the destiny someone else wants you to follow?"
His only son died because of a destiny someone else had put for him, his own son died because of his mistakes, and that's when his change was completed, he was born good, but not perfect, he had no "uncle" to advise him, he had to learn everything on his own throughout his entire life, he saw himself in Zuko, also, he looked at Zuko like a son, he wanted that Zuko followed a different path, for he had suffered enough already.
Holy shit dude me too 😕 let’s both take it as a learning experience and be better ppl :)
