  • In this video I show you how to make a mixture of a mechanical filtration and settling filtration system. I do not know the name of it but it works for aquaponics. You can see the concept in the video.
    The front pipe is just an overflow in case anything gets clogged. It goes directly to my sump tank. Water enters first in the swirl filter through the back which you can't see. It then passes through a 2" pipe in between both barrels to the mechanical filter. And from there it goes to the grow beds.

    I used loofah as a coarse filter in my system. They're easy to grow process, and they're cheap. When they get plugged up pull them out and bury in the traditional garden for added fertilizer.

    I think the mesh on the underflow side defeats the solids filter collection & removal outlet.
    The mesh on the overflow side should come to the top of the tank to help capture the fine solids. Also adding floating media in the gap between the boards is a good idea

    So in my normal fish tanks I use 100% polyester pillow/quilt stuffing for a mechanical filter. Would I be able to do the same here?

    • @vonponics
      @vonponics  4 года назад

      Yes that will supply a lot of surface area for bacteria to attach and adhere to. The more surface area the more beneficial bacteria.
      Jus make sure that if your water is flowing into the filters via gravity. That you dont put to much of the polyester, causing it to clog and overflow.

    Nice video.
    I can see that the water is coming out from the fish tank, then going to Swirl filter. Same pipe is connected to the Mechanical filter also. Which means, water from the fish tank is going to the Swirl and Mechanical filter both simultaneously. and after that the same water is going to somewhere down. All are connected through the same pipe.
    why is it so?

    • @vonponics
      @vonponics  5 лет назад +2

      Hey
      Actually that front pipe is just the overflow for both the filters and the fish tank. Just an extra safety incase something gets clogged in the filters.
      That front pipe goes directly to my sump tank below.
      Water actually enters through the back of the swirl filter then passes through the pipe in between the two barrels.
      So it first goes to the swirl filter then to the mechanical filter.
      Not to both of them at the same time.
      You can see the filters better in this video. Maybe that will help.

      @@vonponics Can I ask you one more question here?
      How do you take care of the nutrients required by the plants? The most important Macro nutrients everyone says is NPK.
      Nitrogen is available via nitrate, how do you provide if there is any deficiency in Phosphorus and Potassium? What do you use to provide these nutrients?
      Also, many says, P and K are also available in fish wastes. Whats your thought on this?

    • @vonponics
      @vonponics  5 лет назад +1

      @@umesh2063
      I did a lot of reading and looking around before setting up my aquaponics system. But I still have a lot to learn since my system is not done yet.
      However I have always gotten the impression that all the nutrients your plants need is readily available in an aquaponics system.
      You are basically creating a small ecosystem where everything helps each other to survive. The fish, bacteria, worms, plants, and what ever else helps each other thrive.
      So for the nutrients it depends on the conditions of your aquaponic system.
      Nitrogen ofcourse is what is most talked about but I do believe the other nutrients can be readily available.
      The only thing I have read that you need to add is chelated iron (when your leaves turn yellow.
      But everything does revolve around how mature your aquaponic system is. The more mature the more the bacterial process works. Also the conditions of your aquaponics system is important. Ph is very important also for nutients.
      They all have different ph for when the are most readily available.
      You can see a chart here
      nrcca.cals.cornell.edu/nutrient/CA5/CA0539.php
      And here is something you can read about nutrients in aquaponics

    I think it's called "SOLIDS FILTER", if it stops the fishes' waste and solids!

    • @vonponics
      @vonponics  3 года назад +1

      A solids filter is a mechanical filter. There are different types of mechanical filters but all revolve around the basis of removing solids. Whether it is a radial flow filter, swirl filter or this filter design seen in the video.

      When I made the filter I didn't have anything else to put in it. But yes if I had I would have put a lot of bio balls, or i would have used more of the matala mat. But I changed the filter and no longer have those two filters in my system.
