    I respect videographers that report failures more than the ones who only show successes.

    I loved your video! ZX Spectrum 48K + was my first computer. So it was why I entered this magical world of computers! I admire your knowledge of these machines. I wish I knew to do that. I almost felt that you loved its hardware and brought it back to life in such a way! Fantastic! :)

    Always entertaining. I have mixed feelings about doing a wholesale recap of old electronics. One part of me says replace because the caps are old, another part says don’t screw with something that’s working.

    Your theme tune (Sorry, Adrian) is on a loop when I go to bed. It's soothing, jazz-funky and helps me get to sleep. EDIT: I should add that it's never the content that makes me feel sleepy.. Investronica.. siesta.. toast rack... AY zzzz.. woken up now for innuendo watch between you and Mark Fixes Stuff 🙂

    For some odd reason I feelt slightly depressed when watching the section where you clean and put back together, because the 80s game music playing in the background reminds me of a much simpler time when hearing such music meant fun.

    Recapping just for the sake of it can cause more problems than it fixes. If it 'aint broke, don't fix it.

      Have to agree. I would perform if possible, a close visual check on the caps for leakage. If there is none, or zero signs of swelling, I’m leaving it. Particularly if it’s working!

    Was it just me that cringed at the reassembly when using a powered screwdriver without backing out the screws as to avoid cutting new threads in the 40-year-old plastic? I spotted at least once screw crossthreading/cutting new threads.

    • @Flashy7
      @Flashy7 8 месяцев назад +1

      Same. I am not that type who thinks that things can only be done only one specific way, but since these battery powered screwdrivers appeared, everybody uses them like it was the world's largest problem to screw in a few screws by hand - especially into our beloved old and fragile computer cases...

    if u replaced the 7805 regulator with a new one then the external heatsink is not going to get hot and you lose certain retro feeling,also on cold days you won't warm your right hand either, and ur 128k will not be a toast rack aymore, bad bad idea

      I actually agree but I'd probably recap a sinclair toast rack 128 as a matter of course if one came to me for repair (unlikely these days as I don't do that anymore), they have a tendency to be unreliable. Not in every case but definitely more than enough for me to just say "f*ck it, ill do the whole thing" to save myself a headache later.

    I genuinely don't understand why these is this fascination with replacing linear regulators with switchmode ones. You can end up with noise on the board from the switching and the power saving is pointless, you aren't going to be running this machine more than a few hours here and there. It isn't going to be on constantly. Why replace when the OG works well.

    • @OscarSommerbo
      @OscarSommerbo 8 месяцев назад

      Or at least supplement the switching supply with a beefy cap to at least lessen the high frequency noise.
