    My older son (who’s almost 30 now) had a gaming channel in high school and he would show me the mean comments sometimes. I couldn’t believe how horrible people could be. I asked him how he could stand to read them and he’d just explain that they were haters or trolls and it didn’t bother him. That’s the reason I’ve never had even the slightest desire to be on social media. I guess my skin is too thin 😟. Great video!

    I fully understand the blocking of cumulative comments. I've started doing that on my FB with even longtime "friends" because like you said, it's my space to express myself. If you don't like what I think about something just scroll on by but I'm old enough now to realize I don't need toxic comments or things that bring me down. And I especially don't like sarcasm or people claiming they're being funny when it's really just mean under the cover of humor.

    • @jbbb7418
      @jbbb7418 6 месяцев назад +4

      Please Don’t forget how easy it is to misinterpret the written word. Some people just can not express themselves well, or communicate well in writing. There have been many times, I have looked back at my own comments or texts that I thought were saying one thing, then looked back or received a weird response and thought, well, I wrote that poorly didn’t I? I think part of that is the rush rush of life. It is disheartening on both ends.

      I get it! One time I got into a really bad car accident and I was SO sad. I posted on my FB about it and this guy shows up out of no where to talk down to me about the situation and how it’s most likely my fault on and on. But that wasn’t the only time, he’d left one or two hurtful things before. So I blocked him. He was really upset and tried to contact me about it! Sometimes I miss MySpace 😅

    • @Diana-qp2rw
      @Diana-qp2rw 6 месяцев назад

      @@jbbb7418Yes! I also believe that if you post your opinion and someone comments their own differing opinion, that’s not a reason to block if they are trying to have a civil discussion or just want to show you a different perspective. After all, you yourself wanted to share your opinion, why shouldn’t other people share theirs, too? Having conversations and exchanging different views, instead of always scrolling by unless you want to express agreement, can be a huge win for all of us and we might be wiser at the end if the day.
      That being said, if someone only wants to pick a fight all the time, I block people like that, too. But I think we should always ask how they meant what they wrote if it’s not obvious that they just wanted to fight. Like you said, written words can often be misunderstand.
      For example, I once wrote “I see where you’re coming from” meaning “I can understand why you have this point of view” (though I disagreed), and the other person thought I meant where they geographically came from and was mad and thought I was racist. Luckily, I had the chance to explain what I really meant and we could continue our conversation.

  • @Diana-qp2rw
    @Diana-qp2rw 6 месяцев назад +10

    Very interesting.
    Personally, while I can understand blocking people who make you feel bad, no matter what their intentions are (I’ve done that on Facebook, even with people who were very nice to me, but just extremely pushy, or people who posted stuff that was harmful to me personally.
    However, I do think it’s problematic when very big accounts just block anyone they don’t want there for whatever reason or when they restrict certain words or comments. Sometimes, more critical comments are so helpful to other viewers (e.g. make them think twice if a product is really that good or if they really need it, if something actually works, etc.) or they even raise awareness on an issue the influencer tries to deflect from (like spreading misinformation, exploiting your children for content, scamming the viewers, etc.). That’s why I urge everyone to look for more information when really big influencers always only have very positive comments. It doesn’t necessarily mean anything bad, but looking for some more information elsewhere might be a good idea.

    When it comes to blocking, creators have a right to not be harassed on their social media. You’re not being denied free-speech, because you also can create content and enjoy getting harassed for your opinions.
    Don’t forget, whatever percentage of the population is mentally unstable, there will be that percentage among influencers. Some of it might be strategic, but plenty will be unstable people doing unpredictable, strange things for no logical reason.

    The cumulative negativity block is so true. I like to share my life on social media, and when I had a really rough year due to trauma I really noticed the ppl who are always negative. I could literally end a post with "This is just stupid fun because I'm sad, please don't offer constructive criticism" and some ppl would still go at it and not apologize when I pointed out that instruction. Like yes I get that I can't control others, but if you're gonna be on my social media commenting on my life as someone I know in real life... Have some manners. As you said, this is my house, act like a guest or leave.

    I once got to work with this group of exchange students from Turkey, and they were literally the best group I’ve ever gotten to work with. But there was one girl who was tall and brunette, and so beautiful inside and out. Her skin tone was actually more
    on the 🍊 side and that was her natural tan! She confided to us that she was actually blonde, but died her hair brown because she felt that her blonde hair did not match her skin tone. She didn’t mind if people thought her hair color was not real, but it did bother her greatly if people were not OK with her skin tone. That really made me sad for her. Her brown hair was so so so pretty. I could only imagine how gorgeous her blonde hair was. But that is an actual person that actually exist! And I never understand why people cannot just take something at face value. For myself, I am blonde, and I have no heritage in my blood that allows me to tan. I will just burn. That means that I am from very blonde countries. Think Viking! Think anything Europe! But no matter what I still have people around me in my real life trying to catch me in some lie about where I’m getting my hair bleached. My eyebrows are blonde. My eyelashes are blonde which, actually you can’t fake that, you cannot fake blonde eye lashes. I seriously do not prefer myself without mascara, but I will show up sometimes, with no mascara just so that people can stop talking for a little while. It becomes such a burden. I really wish people would just lighten up, if they think that something is not real why go so hard on it?

    Charlotte, question please. You said this in todays video, but I have heard recently a lot of other RUclipsrs say the same thing. “The clock app”, why do people seem to be saying that lately? Does something bad happen if you say the “clock” apps actual name? Does it cause problems for your channel?? It is so curious, and I am absolutely ignorant of all of this kind of social media thing.
    Great video today, but also, it is really truly sad. The whole thing. People being intentionally mean or harsh, and the flip side, the inability to communicate well in writing, or misinterpreting the written word. It has happened to me to from the viewer end. I have commented, then later realized either by a response, or by thinking the video and comment over later, that what I wrote did not come across as intended, or I wrote it very poorly. I just want to say thank you for always listing your nail polish and clothing in the description box so I never have to ask ☺I've heard all these secrets except the tricking us into engagement by withholding. Also saw another creator say that influencers make a higher commission off of products sold within the first week of launch. She said that's why a lot of their "first impressions" are always positive but they say they will have to update us later in their monthly favorites and that's when we get their real thoughts. Is that true?
    I do try to comment on every video watched as an added way to thank someone for their content, even though some say they only read the comments within the first hour and I know it may not be seen. Glad to know that's not true for you. ♥

      @omegasobsessions 6 месяцев назад +1

      I honestly think part of this is that many creators say things like “what do you think? Let me know in the comments.” Which is also a trick to up engagement, so someone says to themselves, well, they asked so (insert *I don’t like that* comments) so in some cases it isn’t purely being mean for sport. Also some leave open ended questions that DRAW criticism as a mean comment is still a comment and engagement makes the algorithm happy. Back when you could see the downvotes so people used them it WAS STILL ENGAGEMENT so still “helped” the video.

One thing I don’t understand from creators is when they say “let me know in the comments” and then don’t respond to people. Now after watching this video, I’m guessing they don’t really want to know, but only asked in order to boost engagement. But any time I discuss Final Fantasy 7 they will show up just to make a negative comment or joke about the game not being "the real game" or to pick fights with people in the comments. They've never said anything mean or offense, so I've not blocked or banned them - engagement is nice - but they do bring my own vibe down enough so I know their name without thinking, but not in a good way.

How we say things is just as important as what we say, and it actually does influence the energy of our surroundings. Thank you for helping to spread this message via your incredibly lovely, informative, funny, helpful, applicable, useful, positive content, I am so grateful for you. In case no one has told you yet today - you are such a valuable, lovely human, you rock girl!! ❤

    I don’t usually say anything if I don’t like a look, but I had no idea that only compliments are allowed when an influencer asks how we like a look they’ve done. Thank you so much for making it clear that constructive criticism or true honest feedback is not allowed unless one thinks they look good.
    Also, thank you for making it clear that not watching is the appropriate way to state if the product an influencer is producing--their videos--is not meeting one's needs. I appreciate knowing that!
    I don’t blame you all for blocking people. The bullying that goes on on social media is horrendous. I used to be too shy to comment on videos, and I think I had it right the first time. RUclips is creating a really wonky society. I think I’ll observe from a distance from now on, thank you very much.😂

    Had no idea about all this stuff, Charlotte! As you say, if you behave yourself and be nice to people, no problem. Why can't people just get along and be nice to each other? Social media seems to give people a platform to be nasty when they would never say these things to their face. Thanks for giving us quality content.

    2) you are making it hard to resist getting that blush. It looks stunning on you every time
    3) *not me checking to see if I’ve been blocked despite never commenting on anything* 😂

    Here's a different angle on this, but it still leads to not leaving negative comments ... I find that if I'm starting to feel negatively while watching someone, then that means I should stop watching them for a time, or unsubscribe. Sometimes people reveal themselves more, the more I watch them, and I realize I like them less than I thought, or their content may change to something I like much less. Instead of putting negative comments on their channel, it's simply time for me to leave. Don't "hate watch!" If you stop liking someone's stuff, just be a grown-up and leave their channel.

      Yes!! It’s so strange to continue to CHOOSE to engage with someone that draws your ire or brings you down. The content creator reaps benefits from all engagement, even if it’s negative! To hate watch is truly cutting off your nose to spite your own face.

    Not gonna lie I can understand why your husband loves discussing the cumulative blocks, lol! We all have those people in our lives, work places, even families sometimes! We need some kind of a real life block feature 😂. I always remind myself that super negative people are almost universally unhappy, and it is themselves, not their targets, with whom they have issues. But by all means, block away! Protect your garden! Tend upur zen!!!
    Fun video !

    Hi Charlotte,
    This was so interesting. I never knew or noticed any of this stuff going on. My mum used to say, "If you can't say anything good, don't say anything at all."
    😊 ❤

    Really interesting! I love the analogy of being in the creators’’home’! If people don’t like the content they don’t have to watch at all, don’t need to be unpleasant. Well said! ❤

      Actually, that metaphor isn’t exactly accurate. It’s more like people being in their business place. This is a business most influencers have created to make money, and it’s a product that they produce. (besides a few that do it as a hobby for fun, which are rare)

    I’ve heard you tubers get really horrible comments but am surprised how thin skinned they can be. I always see comments overly complimentary. I guess the other comments get deleted. Funny how you tube does that sneaky thing and how people pump up their numbers and don’t disclose sponsorships!! Count on you to be the honest one!! You do have the best personality for sure!❤️❤️❤️

    I think everyone has the right to block anyone for any reason. I don't understand why those who get blocked get so upset about it. Why do people get so involved or obsessed over ppl they don't even know personally? I understand the appreciation of someone's art, but not enough to stalk or get upset over. Same with mean comments, you don't know that person enough to be so mean. Glad you're explaining the gate-keeping videos😂. I can't believe people haven't figured it out years ago.

    This was a fascinating and informative video Charlotte! I’ve never understood why people leave mean and hateful comments on someone’s channel. I loved what you said “Freedom of Speech does not mean freedom of consequences” I’ve followed Sam March for years and years. I remember some of the not so nice comments she was receiving about things going on in her life. It’s such a shame. I can’t see anyone being mean to you you’re such a lovely person with amazing content.
    I’ve made comments wondering what bronzer someone used and I see so many of the same comments but the creator never responds to anyone and now I know why.
    Great video ❤❤
    Have a great night!!

    “If you don’t have anything nice to say, don’t say it at all”. It’s really this simple.
    I just don’t get why people say mean things. And sometimes they’re in disguise. Like a friend once said “you look great, don’t let anyone tell you any different”. What exactly was she saying? Was it nice or inferring she thinks so but maybe not every/anyone else? Such a bizarre way to compliment. 🤯

    I love your videos Charlotte! My son sometimes calls me a dinosaur (as I still use email etc) but when I watch your updates and I learn terms like "mood hoover" it's a complete education, and I can drop it in the conversation over dinner and if he hasn't heard it he loves it! And suddenly I'm a super-cool Mum once more! :D

    Thank you for your perspective on negative comments and how someone can think they are not coming across as negative but they do anyway. I never thought about how posting an unpopular opinion can come across negative instead of helpful for people in the comments so they know why some people don't like a product. We should always phrase our constructive criticism of a product in a way that it's understood that just because it didn't work for me it may work for someone else and why that would be. I believe that I do try to phrase things in as much of a positive way but going forward I'll double check and triple check that it cannot be misunderstood. I love your videos and enjoy every bit of your content.
