For the base i did square knot pattern. then I attached the cords on the base by double half hicth one by one attach all to base ring. Its mentioned into video as well. Thank you

Using smaller diameter will affect the measurements and overall cords used. If you can recalculate the cords measurements by yourself then yes you can use 5mm. It will be used more in order to fill the rings and also more rows will be made. Hope it will help. Thank you.
