tremendous interview. Thank you for posting. There's a certain sadness in seeing 9th sort of accept his legacy as someone that is worth much more than he is recognized for, but it's also impressive that he's not stuck trying to revisit his past and relive a timeframe or window that perhaps has passed--instead, he's teaching and is passing the baton of his body of work to new artists, and that's truly the type of the thing that makes heroes
For everyone wondering what Hip Hop is and what it looks like. The minds that it creates and harbors. 9th Wonder is all of the above. 9th Wonder is Hip Hop and what it sounds like today when it's at it's best. 9th Wonder is a monster!
"We live in a time when people see music before they hear it." That is such an incredible piece of insight. I never would have thought of that, but it's true and does represent a difference between previous generations of music listeners and this one. Sometimes, I have to make a conscious decision to hide the RUclips window when I'm listening to a song for the first time, because I'm afraid that the production of the video or the on-screen lyrics will affect my first impression of it, and that's not something that previous generations even had to think about. Because of when I grew up, I prefer to romanticise music as something that's independent of video (although they do compliment one another), but that's not really how it is, now, in this broadband age, where you can hear (and watch) any song that you want, at will, on RUclips. I guess that it's like Video Killed the Radio Star all over again, but on a whole 'nother level.
yeah man, i always minimise RUclips when listening to a track I've not heard before.... Plus, if it's hiphop I don't always wanna be watching black women shaking their bums.... =/
what about online stream like spotify? the audio is excellent in contrast to the audio destruction perfomed by youtube. Also, it's only music, no visuals
Shinji's Delusion I couldn't compare them, since I've never used a paid streaming service. If I did, I probably wouldn't be so frustrated by this, haha. I never even considered that the audio quality might be better, since I assumed all audio streaming was probably more-or-less equal (sub-MP3 256kbps quality).
lol, I understand! you shouldn't really take my word for it, I would rather have you subscribing for a month - free trial - and see if there is any difference! If you ever get around doing that, let me know how it goes! I used to listen to stuff on RUclips too, but now I'm here exclusively for the videos.
For those that are so-called anti sampling just understand that this is the original form of hip hop. Without the forefathers using cuts from other genres this art form wouldn't exist in the way that it dominates today. Hell most of you wouldn't know a sample if you heard it undressed.
If it wasnt for 9th wonder i dont think i would of been able to make a beat like this. Thank you 9th wonder you inspired me!!! ----------- >>>> Search Real Love (Sampled Beat) Prod. By Superb
I want to work with 9th wonder one day, this guy just has such an organic and upright spirit about him and his music. I agree, there is an art to sampling, and he's like, Leonardo DaVinci wit it.
I agree. 9th is mos definitely one of the best record choppers in the hip hop game. His sound/production is original, and i gotta respect him for that.
THIS IS SO REAL! People don't realize how much work it takes to rhyme...produce...do any of this hip hop shit. Cats just wake up and say "i'm going to become a rapper/producer"....which is fine...but you have to understand the science. I've spent years studying poetic form to hone my MC game. The great Producers understand Music Theory to a 'T'. I just wish more could understand.
"I would like to hear them take "Today" by Tom Scott and turn it into "They Reminisce Over You." That quote proved his legitimacy to me. I don't think any other producer could have done what Pete Rock did with that song.
9th wonders music speaks for itself. all i bump is 9th wonder instrumentals allday. it takes you on a journey. as a producer and as a music lover 9th wonder is an inspiration and ive learn so much from him. if hes looking for an apprentice, where do i sign up !!!
Sampling is composing. If you make complex beats and really take pride in it, what you're really doing is composing and arranging a piece of music of your own creation, just using sounds off records to do it. It's like sitting down writing out a piece of music, telling different instruments what to do.
and to answer your question get yourself a turntable, (one that has different speeds you can use), get some cords to hook up to your drum machine/sampler (MPC 60/1000/2000/2000xl/2500/3000/4000/5000). or sp-1200, or motif, or ASR 10. so you can sample the record, and chop it up yourself, you can use programs like fl-studio, reason, or garage band to chop a sample up for you, but its better to do it yourself(you'll have better control of the sample).
9th Wonder... not oldschool, not newschool, he`s trueschool! HipHop today is nearly dead, but producers like him keep HipHop alive. Greetings from germany.
I'm an old schooler & I agree with what he said about the difficulty 7 imagination that it takes to use sampling effectively. Try to sit & listen to "Today" if you can. T.R.O.Y. is a classic REGARDLESS of era & genre. And Pete Rock's genius in sifting through about 8 minutes of The Ohio Players & finding about 6 secs at the end "What's Goin' On'" & crafting THAT into "Lots Of Lovin'", is sheer genius which produced yet another classic
Did it ever occur to you that people will never stop learning how to play instruments? Music cannot be killed. There are so many different genres and artists out there. 9th isn't killing music. He just makes it differently. He takes something that has already been made and turns it into something totally different! A different sound, feel and vibe.. to me, Hip Hop is about being creative. and it doesn't just stick to sampling. There are actual musicians out there who make hip hop music.
The song will be on Remo's JAMLA debut album. It will be out in 2010. If you want to hear some of the song being recorded, search for "de blog jam 3 "on youtube. That's the most you'll see before the album comes out.
anyone can make bad or mediocre beats. But to make great beats consistently takes undeniable talent. Whether you want to call them musicians or not, you can't deny the artistic integrity of the craft. Maybe "musical artist" would be a more appropriate label to satisfy all the musician snobs.
Ultimately, this conversation you've been engaged in for while now is about what is, or is not art. I think this is a very interesting question, so I'll just give you my perspective. Art is defined by it's effect or result, not it's method. Although beauty isn't exclusively expressed by an artist, it has a strong intangible correlation. Artists like 9th, Dilla or Pete rock create a powerful and unique emotional experience for many of us, independent of semantics or your critique.
@SuniDays87 The track at 6.10 is called "is she the reason" you can find this on here as well! As 4 9th wonder beats that stand out. I could go on for days about what 9th tracks stand out 4 me, It depends on what you're looking for. the 9th wonder stuff I follow, are all the early little brother/ justus league stuff he produced years back with khrysis. Also a lot of the unreleased instrumentals that are floating around. you'll find plenty on here!!
thats a good point ya made. in a way it is similar to a rock group covering a classic track and making it better. like Pantera covered Black Sabbath's Electric Funeral and made it hundred times better and metal-heads loved it, damn i loved it!
One of my fav producers of today even though his hip hop joints be having the same snare!! Change that ish up yo! His R&B tracks slump and shows his diversity.
Seein as how you need a strong knowledge of hip hop just to be aware of his greatness i would say 9th wonder is just about The GREATEST name you could ever have for someone in his shoes. f-ckin awesome
all those mpc's i mentioned are hardware based(a drum machine that acts on its own), its not a controller like the mpk's or the mpc reniassiance, or the NI maschine, those are things you hook up to a PC or Laptop, and you use it with garage band, reason fl studio, you can't use those by yourself, so it depends on what your trying to do, whats your type of method of music production, or if your a keyboardist and you make music on a styth workstation, its all about how you want to make beats.
sometimes a great musician is not determined by what he/she uses but what he/she does with whatever they have. making the best of what they got. i remember an interview with 9th stating he couldn't afford an mpc at the time or instruments so he found a way to make the music he wanted with the equipment he could afford. Max Cavalera of sepultura/soulfly couldn't afford a proper guitar so he only had a 4-string cheapo and got good at that. he may have sold a few records but still rocks the 4
Great video and he is so right, good music should speek for itself,it should'nt matter what someone looks like or how they act,if the music's hot thats it .
i haven't taken the time to skim thru all these damn comments but id like to know if that instrumental that comes out in the beginning from 0:17, its oh so nice..
@SaturnDyer how far have you gotten "keepin it real" with your mpc? not hating on the mpc but i bet 9th wonder would make a lot better stuff than any of us would with it. show us your music and i'll take my comment back.
it depends on how you wanna work. maybe you could try to get an understanding of how different machines work. watch tutorials, read discusson forums, compare alternatives etc. a few months ago i was deciding myself on what to buy. i ended up buying an MPC 1000.
That may be how you define legend. Pete Rock and Dj Premier are in a whole nother class. Legends Africa Bam, Marley mall, Scottlarock, Slick Rick and Doug E Fresh, The Fat Boys, Funky 4 Plus one more, Dj Kool Hurc, The Rock steady Crew, Melle Mell, jThe Sugar Hill Gang, Curtis Blow, Whoodini, The real Roxanne Shanta, The Get Fresh Crew, Dj Jazzy Jeff, Grand Wizare Theador, Grandmaster Flash Grand Master Cash,Ect.... I Think you get the Picture. Big up to Hip Hop!!!
@Runningjoels Okay, but i hope you understand that the art of sampling is something else than just timestretching loops. Thats why i think that if you do not notice what sample it is, than its a good flip.
Yo I feel this dude ,with me it's all about the music, i come from the era of music, the beat means everything. When you mention dope producers you have to mention the Large Professor AKA Xtra P & Diamond D, these dudes are in the elite but often get over looked.....
''its never the machine, its the man behind the machine''...word up.
Lies, it's always both
'The Listening' by Little Brother is one of the most underrated hip hop albums of all time. 9th's production on that was insane.
tremendous interview. Thank you for posting. 9th Wonder is the real deal.
wow dude is so smart he hit the nail on the hammer when he said big band didn't understand jazz when it came out
Noah Hancock I read this comment right as he said that 😂
For everyone wondering what Hip Hop is and what it looks like. The minds that it creates and harbors. 9th Wonder is all of the above. 9th Wonder is Hip Hop and what it sounds like today when it's at it's best. 9th Wonder is a monster!
4 years later your thoughts on todays "hiphop"?
🙄

9th made a great point about the music industry today being so visual. People have forgotten what the true purpose of music really is.
For those that are so-called anti sampling just understand that this is the original form of hip hop. Without the forefathers using cuts from other genres this art form wouldn't exist in the way that it dominates today. Hell most of you wouldn't know a sample if you heard it undressed.
You're speaking the truth.
Facts.
Watching this has changed my producing style so much. Think I watched this about two yrs ago
2:47-2:53 9th named my favorite producers of all time

9th Wonder is real. Has my full respect and admiration.
It's all creative, it's hard, but it's rewarding. 9th wonder one of my biggest influences!
Everytime great to hear and see a Master speakin

i would love for 9th wonder to be my teacher on the arts of beat making and sampling
9th deserves much more respect. But as long as he keeps the good music coming, I'm happy.
9th wonders music speaks for itself.

9th wonder THE BEST keep doing your thing! does anyone knows what the beat is called at 0:19 ?

Happy late bday 9th!!
@SaturnDyer
how far have you gotten "keepin it real" with your mpc? not hating on the mpc but i bet 9th wonder would make a lot better stuff than any of us would with it. show us your music and i'll take my comment back.
HE PREACHING DA TRUTH..
@Foreezybeezy1 it's a track called "Honey" from the Erykah Badu album "new amerykah part one"!
it depends on how you wanna work. maybe you could try to get an understanding of how different machines work. watch tutorials, read discusson forums, compare alternatives etc. a few months ago i was deciding myself on what to buy. i ended up buying an MPC 1000.
9th is one of the greats...
what a wonderful generilzation. i did try. it was fun. actually... been doing it almost every day for the last 20 years. thanks for the tip.

Top 10 producers all time.. no doubt
still so relevant
What's the name of the first song? That shit is bangin'
@Runningjoels Okay, but i hope you understand that the art of sampling is something else than just timestretching loops. Thats why i think that if you do not notice what sample it is, than its a good flip.

Beautiful Lady for 9th's artist Big Remo. youtube search, de blog jam 3, and you'll see them recording the song.
