I believe that sound in Wah-Wah is a Zurna, a Turkish woodwind instrument that is heavily featured on their album they released after this, "Flying Microtonal Banana"
Personally I think they have vastly improved as musicians/songwriters since 2020. My fave is ice,death,planets... But all post 2020 albums slay. Double LP kg/lw, butterfly 3000, omnium gatherum, changes, laminated denim, petrodragonic. All s-tier
Personally, i like your insights into the music industry. Also I'm a fairly new (though die-hard) King Gizzard fan. Found them late 2021. I think post 2017 gizz blows everything that came before it out of the water. (Except Eyes Like the Sky)
Since the addition of heavy metal to their live repertoire, Road Train is played with a double kick and it slays twice as hard. Very much excited to see your impressions of Polygondwanaland. I think it should be broken into four segments, as each is meant to be a suite. If you're digging the Arabic sounding scales, I would recommend that your album after Poly should be Flying Microtonal Banana, which is based around Turkish music and uses non-western tuning. It's very arabic-sounding throughout the whole record.
Repeating my recommendation to check out the KEXP session for Ice, Death, Planets, Lungs, Mushrooms and Lava. Magma and Iron Lung from that show have to be some of my favorite Gizz live performances ever.
if you’re listening to polygon make sure to break it up like this > Crumbling Castle > Polygondwanaland/The Castle In The Air/Deserted Dunes Welcome Weary Feet > Inner Cell/Loyalty/Horology > Tetrachromacy/Searching…/The Fourth Color
@@rockdariff You should totally check out the KEXP versions of the Poly songs (not all of them are available but could check out the ones they do have). It would give the videos more of a visual element and as a musician also I think you would dig seeing the studio performances!
@@rockdariff I hope so, Ice Death is insanely awesome. Have to watch Ice V, Iron Lung and Magma from the KEXP sessions. Most intense live recordings of these songs. Very mind blowing.
So for polygondwanaland - crumbling castle has an amazing, high quality live recording at KEXP. The studio version however would help you get more accustomed to the sound and vibes of polygondwanaland.
I woukd also very very highly recommend looking at lyrics for the album too, bc there’s no music videos and the lyrics tell a story but can be hard to hear bc of the unique way they’re sung
If you want their real peak (imo) you should check later Ice, Death, Planets, Lungs, Mushrooms and Lava, it's a full 1 hour jam session that flows so well into your ears. And other recommendation I didn't see that much is Changes, it has so much variety and its overall sound is described as "soaked in the warm sonics of 70s R’n’B and guided by simple chord-changes that contain multitudes" Something funny is that these are 2 of the 3 albums that they released in... October lmao
If it hasn't been said before, and it's probably something that is going to make you itch for it more rather than scratch your itch. But that riff in People Vultures that you so wished the song was based on and that you were so sure would show up in other albums is actually played in the 18 second song, Track 10 on Murder of the Universe titled "Some Context".
@@nothinginmyway5568 i just think the live videos are more entertaining to watch and as a musician it’s fun to watch how the band works, and in my opinion it makes for a better reaction
Good job man! I was worried you wouldn't like them because of all the pressure making videos puts on it, and that if you just stumbled upon them and dabbled into it you would like them more objectively. Because it's nice to hear how people have / have had the same experience as me of becoming obsessed with them.
Stu's wooos are iconic 🔥 Also, for Poly, the Inner Cell, Loyalty, Horology suite should be done together. There's a great live recording from Red Rocks!
Since you're checking out Polygon next, the songs Inner Cell, Loyalty, Horology are a cohesive story and musical concept that should really be listened to all at once. Hell, even the band always plays these songs together live.
lol! I died when you realized they were saying Road Train. Not because I think your a dumbass, but because when PetroDragonic came out I did the same thing with Motor Spirit. I was like, "why are they chanting "murder spirit"? lol
Man you are gonna do a backflip (from excitement) when crumbling castle comes on. Might I suggest smoking a little dooby beforehand. ;) This is my excitement don't you get too excited.
OK here's what you should do. Finish Polygondwana then listen to Butterfly 3000, then listen to LW, then Fishing for Fishies then listen to Infest the Rats Nest. It's quite the build up but that's what I just did. Getting a little stoned is recommended.
I think Poly is a great choice for the next one. After that I highly recommend one of the microtonal albums as you keep bringing up the eastern sound. Those albums are all about that! That is: Flying Microtonal Banana KG LW I would start with KG as it has the most variation in styles (though all 3 albums are great). They really take the microtonal sound to a bunch of different genres on this one and it's awesome!
Not trying to be a suck up but I really do like your reactions with your comments, different reactions give me added perspective on KGs music, don't censor yourself too much! Excited for Polygondwanaland.
Those DMs are right. Way moreso than this, poly can be broken up into tracks. I'd say less so the title suite. Those songs are short and very similar in vibe, so you might as well marathon those. But the Horology suite is so good BECAUSE the songs stand on their own. They're also pretty hefty songs to absorb fully, so trying them individually at first would be beneficial to focus. But the last 3 songs can also be broken up. I wouldn't listen to Searching by itself, though 🤔 THIS ALBUM IS COMPLICATED.
Hard disagree with mostly everything you said. You can definitely do them individually but each part of the album tells an interconnected story that you won’t pick up on if you do them separately.
Highly recommend you DONT go for the KEXP version of Crumbling Castle first, like many Gizz fans say to do. As good as the KEXP version is, the studio version is more complete and has a much cleaner tone than the live version. Also, im firmly on team "break Poly up into groups of three."
Hmm... I am one of the people pushing for the 3 song break up of Polygondwanaland. Buuut... If you do choose to do it track by track, I HIGHLY recommend that you at least do that last 2 songs together. The last long really starts at the end of the previous one.
You talking about your band is a musician's perspective that only makes your reactions better! I love to hear it.
I believe that sound in Wah-Wah is a Zurna, a Turkish woodwind instrument that is heavily featured on their album they released after this, "Flying Microtonal Banana"
the song wah-wah has the same key as their other song called "the river" and they often transition in and out of it while playing them live
they're also both in 5/4 time signature
When I first heard the river transition into wah wah on chunky shrapnel I lost my fucking mind.
Such a great song live

Eyes like the sky is actually pretty f'ing good imo.

If you said you like the middle eastern sound you're going to love Flying Microtonal Banana and LW
LW most def !!!
No love for KG??? AUTOMATIONNNNN AUTOMATIONNNNN
And KG. It's the most varied. I would start with that as it shows the diversity of the band for their microtonal music.

Ice death is my favourite album by far, with polygondwanaland in second. Ice death is such a cool and varied and quality release
Ice Death and Laminated Denim are my faves. And both released in the same month also.

Yeah I thought it was a MOTU sound.
If you’re gonna do Poly, I’d recommend the KEXP for Crumbling Castle, the first song of the album. It’s sick
Yes!
It cuts off the intro to that track tho, which is pretty much essential to the whole thing

Insane that Nonogon, Murder, Poly (and Flying Microtonal Banana and Gumboot) were all released in the same year.
Nonagon was released a year prior to the others in 2016
