2003 NLDS, Game 4: Giants @ Marlins

- San Francisco Giants 6 at Florida Marlins 7, F -- Rookie pitcher Dontrelle Willis faced Jerome Williams in this Series-winning game on October 4th. The Giants scored first in the top of the 2nd of a sacrifice fly, but the Marlins came back in the third and fourth innings before the Giants tied it up once again in the sixth. The Marlins took the lead again in the 8th inning when Miguel Cabrera would single home two runs to take the lead. But the Giants came back fighting with a leadoff double and a base hit to make it a one run game. With one out left for the Marlins to win, Ugueth Urbina hit a batter and put J.T. Snow in scoring position. When Snow tried to score on a single to left, Jeff Conine threw to Ivan Rodriguez at the plate, who tagged Snow as he was pushed to the ground. Rodriguez managed to hold on the ball, recording the final out for the Marlins victory. This was the first time in history that a series ended with a potential ting run thrown out at the plate.
Man! 2003 was a magical year to be a kid following the Marlins.
As a long time Rangers fan, it was a pleasure watching Pudge win the MVP, those gold gloves, and throwing out base runners. I remember the first time he threw out Rickey Henderson, he threw him out by a mile, and Rickey couldnt believe it. Best catcher to ever play, a lock for the Hall of Fame
Bench was the greatest catcher of all time.
Watching from in 2018 and from China. Great childhood memories. I really miss the old school Marlins.
It's scary how right the broadcasters were about Cabrera.
"The uspet of the 2003 postseason" haha wait a little bit
Ali Kringel Like seriously.. Its like McKeon heard him say that and was like, "Oh, ok, BRB"
Are you a Yankees fan?
For a team that is 25 years with 2 world series still not that bad
@@Party931southFl yeah but you think winning 2 in 10 years would mean at least 3 by now . I'm grateful as hell man but it's been rough ... Born here in 84 so I've been a fan since day one but wow it's been real tough lately. Hope better days are ahead.
@MANCHESTER UNITED who gives a fuck! baseball is the highest paid sport
Yoo the park has NEVER been that pack for a baseball game since lol
I was at this game! I was only 9 years old. I don't think I've ever witnessed a stadium erupt like Pro Player did that day when Pudge hung on for the winning out.
I'm your age, and I was at Game 5 of the World Series. That atmosphere was the best I've ever seen and will probably ever see again at any sporting event. A Series at Marlins Park would probably get loud, but there's a big difference between a 37k crowd and a 65k crowd. Great memories.
So glad this showed up in my feed. I was at the game on the third base line. One of the best I've ever been to
Dontrelle Willis could've been a great pitcher, him and Cabrera were stud rookies that season. Flash forward 10 years later, Cabrera is racking up triple crowns and MVP's while Willis is no longer in the MLB..
I think this game impacted him into 2004. He wasn’t the same for the rest of the playoffs after having a torrid _offensive_ performance in this game, especially the triple. I saw it for myself, I was there with my grandfather to the very last pitch. D-Train was terrible in the NLCS, and was relegated to relief for the World Series.
That was an amazing season! I'm forever a Florida/Miami Marlins fan! GO FISH!!!
Marlins had such a great club that they didn't even know what they had. Lowell and Beckett hands down won Sox the title in 07. D train later became a 20 game winner. Pavano won 18 games later. Gonzalez was one of the best defensive SS in the game with Castillo as the best double combo in the MLB. Keep Pudge at catcher. Pierre-most durable players in the game as leadoff. Lee won a batting title later on. Cabrera-Triple Crown! Nothing more to be said. Now try facing this lineup 1-9 defensively.
They knew exactly what they had but the owner got salty after he was denied a new ballpark so he stripped the team.
Theyve done this 4 times 1997, 2003, 2010 and 2016
RIP Tony Gwynn
Since ted Williams the best hitter of his era
@@erics2739 I lost brain cells reading that comment
@@bondsgoat25it’s just a missing comma , he’s still right
I remember this weekend vividly. I watched this game, with its incredible ending, then I watched my Red Sox beat the A's on Trot Nixon's walk-off hr. The next day, I went to the Patriots game (Titans). In the 4th quarter, the pats came back to win and highlights of David Ortizs game-winning double came on the titantron. It was euphoric pandemonium.
the 1st MLB game i had was MLB 06 with Vladimir Guerrero on it. the Marlins were my favorite team because of watching them in 03. Dontrelle Willis was my favorite pitcher, Carlos Delgado was my favorite hitter on MLB 06. Loved that game
Was that Tony Gwynn broadcasting there? Wow RIP.
Ricardo Cangas no one better to talk about hitting
@MANCHESTER UNITED Say Liverpool the best lul
@MAN UTD Man City is better, and screw you flooding all sports videos except soccers with your drivel.
Tony Gwynn was great as a color guy and it sucks that we lost him so young.
My home state born and raised in South Florida West Palm Beach and I'd say I give respect for the Marlins including their world series championship of 2003
Thank you so much for uploading this! I wish I had all the games from the 2003 and the 1997 runs.
The EPIC Miracle Marlins! I will never forget this game and this MAGICAL moment!
This game will probably be remembered best for how it ends.
Rip Jose Fernandez
I don't know why people say the Marlins didn't deserve to win the World Series that year at the end we kicked the yanks ass we defenetly deserved it. This year the Marlins look good as well I believe in all my south Florida sports till the day die 🔥🐬🐠
youre a fucking idiot gerry. fucking yankee fans suck
Salty Yankee fuck. We beat your ass that year. The Marlins were cocky because they were good. So stop crying. Cubs suck
Nope. I got your mom.
king_jakub it's because of the Steve Bartman play but I don't agree with that
dude who gives a fuck. they didn't deserve to win the WS because of TV ratings? who. gives. a fuck. cocky players?! on a professional baseball team?! my stars, surely the marlins are the only team in the league with cocky players, curses to them. PS, fan of neither team. terrible comment.
Fucking Pudge Rodriguez⚾️🐐
Nice quality, thanks for posting!
Skipped work and convinced my best friend to skip and come with me. We were upper deck behind the plate. One of the best times of my life. That year was magic in south florida.
I was only five in 2003, too young and wasnt a fan yet. The next time they make it to the postseason, I can’t wait to skip school/work to go see the games
A post-season classic!
Dave O'Brien, former Marlins broadcaster, doing play-by-play...
I wanna make these memories in our new ballpark. It's going to take some time but I think we will get there.
You won’t ever see a game-ending play as exciting as that ever again
This is why I love baseball
Pudge at the plate.
I'm watching this game again just to listen to Rick Sutcliffe and Tony Gwynn.
The game that led to the infamous Mad Dog Russo rant. "Win one time! Just one goddamn time!!"
With the new rules, that would of never been an out at home plate! I hate the new rules in baseball!
- IKR?? This was one of the BEST home plate collisions EVER largely due to the magnitude of the moment. Little did anyone know that this was just the tip of the iceberg for the Marlins' postseason run that year. But now with the new home plate rules in effect we don't see these as often( all due to the fact that Buster Posey broke his ankle during a home plate collision a few years ago ). I understand they want to avoid players suffering concussions & injuries & that kind of thing, but taking away one of the best plays in baseball isn't exactly the answer either.
I don't think this is true. You CAN block the plate if you have the ball. Pudge did not block the plate from the runner until he got the ball in his possession. I think if this happened today, he'd still be out.
jeason gagnon you can block the plate but the runner has the right to knock you down.
You can block the plate if it comes in the act of Fielding the ball
Ivan the pudge Rodriguez the best....!!
I guess the first and only time that a playoff series ended with an out at the plate. Umbelievable.
I miss D-Train...
Nostalgia is a beautiful thing
Both of the Marlins' World Series championships came at the expense of the San Francisco Giants in the NLDS (1997 & 2003).
As a Giants fan, this was the best game I saw that the Giants did not win. Such an excruciatingly close game, but I knew that JT was dead meat when they sent him.
Willis could have been such a great pitcher, but that anxiety, his mechanics killed him...he lost just about every bit of control he had.
Yup he fell off in 05, and so did the Marlins
Incredible that this was 10 years ago already! Literally seems like yesterday!
Jason Schmidt should’ve pitched this game !!
Nothing makes me happier than to watch the Giants lose a big game! 😆
It took 7 years for the SF Giants to recover from this game at least they redeemed themselves as 2010 World Series Champion
Why would Felix Rodriguez decide to hit Derek Lee to push the winning run in to scoring position ? Strange choice to say the least. And of course Miggy comes through with the winning knock. A sign of things to come. See yah in Cooperstown, Miggy !
Bad memories from a giants fan.. Lol
was glad to be part of this game. The ending seemed like something scripted out of a movie. the crowd erupted even before Pudge collided with Snow. Watching from the upper deck, I saw fans throwing beer bottles out of joy. I was scared for the moment that I forgot they were plastic beer bottles.
WATCHING on night PUDGE goes to the HALL OF FAME!!! HIS GREATEST season in career..Won his first Championship and Id take that over 1999...Best year was his Marlin year! HOF INDEED!
When that final play happened my then 3 year old sister freaked out and jumped on me like a scared cat when 75.000 people erupted all at the same time.. great memories.
I remember this when I was. 9 years old.. back in the days..

Wow, I was at this game. Remember it like it was yesterday. Stadium went nuts!
I WAS THERE! That stadium was moving like a ship on a heavy sea
Chemistry matters and man did they have some chemistry.
I've always loved Urbina's reaction right after the final out at the plate. Too bad he was later arrested for attempted murder.
Where is he now ?
@@ericsigersmith6067 He was sent to prison in 2005 and released in 2012
2:40:05 Series ending play
One of the most underrated games of this century ecspecially with the repercussions
I ran on the FEILD that year earlier in the summer all the way to the infield dirt and back to the right field wall I got arrested HAHAHa and I was at that game one of the best games ive ever been to in my life. The marlins have brought me great memories. They should give me a game ball or something Im not saying it was all me but after I ran on the field in an inter league game vs the A's over the summer we really turned our season around. I was going to run on the field with a dont trade Mike Lowell sign but ended up just doing it in an OJ Mcduffie jersey!!!!
I was at game 3, great memories man
Just as intense as this
For a 4 game series, top non redsox alds of my lifetime
Cruz Jr ironically won the gold glove 😂 that year, but choked and lost the NLDS for the Giants, he had critical errors in game 2 and 3. I remember this game as if this was yesterday.
2:40:00 play of the game!
Pudge GOAT!
2:40:05 Final Out
Why the hell didn't they pinch run for JT Snow lol
The reason they didn't pinch-run for Snow was they had NO position players left. THe Giants carried 12 pitchers for the NLDS. They used Andres Gallarraga in the 6th in the 4-run inning that tied the game, then brought in the struggling Jose Cruz in the 7th as per a double switch. In the 9th, Perez hit for Felix Rodriguez and doubled. After Snow singled in the run, they HAD to leave J.T. in to run, and send up Pedro Feliz to hit for Torrealba. A strikeout and a fly out by their last bullet off the bench, Ex-Marlin Santiago (batting for Cruz), the Giants had no one left.
On a what-if scenario, had Snow taken the wide turn and score and the bottom of the 9th inning was played, there would've been an unconventional outfield arrangement. Having hit for Jose Cruz in the top half, Santiago would've gone to catch, but that would mean Pedro Feliz would've had to go in to play right field, and he only played two innings in the outfield--on June 3 against the Twins--all year long. And with all the manueverings, if it was still tied in the 10th, the Giants would've had the pitchers spot hit third, and you'd need a pitcher to pinch-hit.
Of course, with Pudge holding onto the ball, this scenario is academic as this was the first of several such surprises for the upstart Marlins.
NFL-MLB Classics dang good answer
@@nflmlbclassics wow fucking nailed it. I watched this game live and was wondering that but now I'm older and know much more about baseball
NFL-MLB Classics wow...
best game i ever went to. go fish
Fun fact Jeffrey Hammonds was drafted two picks ahead of Derek Jeter!
when baseball playoffs games were on ESPN.
The giants almost tied the game by the collision that happened When the runner came running fast.
Willis had swag
first pitch 59 mph...seems legit
Durham did a double take on the scoreboard reading. 59???
also nice last name
I feel like anyone on the Giants not named Snow would have scored on that single.
2:40:03 the tag
"Barely a place...to sit"
-Empty seats everywhere, ESPECIALLY in the upper decks.
It was a football stadium there were more people there than most clubs have in 2 games over 2 days.
@@IAmAHeater Calm down, bro. It's not that serious.
@@IAmAHeater Lol
People that don't know that stadium don't know there are about 1,000 seats that can not be used since it's a foot ball stadium. Especially since you have to have a "batters eye"
The red Sox down to 2-0 to the was the upset of the playoffs the marlins dominating the Yankees in 6 games
Pudge took this game over from the plate.
My favorite part is when Snow puts his head in the dirt! Haaaa! Giants suck! Go Dodgers!!!
Dodgers classic choke artists. Calling Dr. Heimlich! Lol
Ha ha ha seven years later. Orange and Black World Series Championship. Dodgers are plastic lol.
imagine playing chess and you always start with a piece moved. that's barry bonds
holy shit he just fouled out?
This team should have done so much more. The 05 Marlins are one of the most disappointing teams in baseball in the last 30 years. They traded Penny and Pudge was gone but they had LoDuca and Delgado. Then Castillo, Lowell, Gonzalez, Pierre, Cabrera , Encarnacion, Conine.... bullpen was stacked Starters were Beckett Willis Pavano Burnett and Leiter. They should have raped the NL and the pitching just SUCKED outside of 22 game winner Willis. Had a wild card lead entering September. They were built for the postseason. Such a shame.
You can blame Loria for being a money-grabbing excuse of an owner.
@@lcrossmk8563 Loria spent a lot of money on the 05 team and no one went to games even when they were winning. I don't like him either and good riddance....but yeah people lose interest real fast
@@LudaChez That's garbage. The '05 team was essentially the same as the '03 team, but without Ivan Rodriguez and Jeff Conine. It's Loria's fault the Marlins have bad attendance, not the fans. The fans did go when they were winning---look at their attendance in '97.
@@lcrossmk8563 wow the 05 team was better on paper than the 03 team. 04 was a very very similar team and still no one went. So they made a trade mid season and signed Carlos Delgado in the off-season. To great money for the time. And he took less to play here.
You can argue that he didn't give it enough time for sure but he spent to keep it mostly intact in 04 and paid much to get better in 05. Yeah maybe more time. But no one went. So he said screw it.
Now be more upset they didn't spend after 08 or 09 when they had a good core. Don't be mad they dumped 2012 or even then recent dump. Be mad at trading Paddack and Castillo for nothing. Be mad about 08 and 09.
Be mad about Loria for a billion other things. But not 03-05
2020 any1 lmaooooo
I was there.
when baseball teams was still playing in football stadiums
1:02:18 Ozzie Guillen
Why didn't Dusty Baker pinch run for J.T. Snow?? Why was Eric Young Sr. left off the playoff roster, in favor for a third lefty reliever out of the pen? (Jason Christiansen, who had a 5.19 ERA that year, and didn't even throw a pitch in the series). So confounding. Then there's the 1997 Wild Card bounce: why did the Marlins have home field advantage, against a team with a much better record (the Giants)? Of course MLB would rectify this playoff format the next season. Throw in Scott Cousins destroying Buster Posey, and Giants-Marlins is a way underrated rivalry.
Felipe Alou was the manager. Baker was managing the Cubs.
Miguel Cabrera is soooo young and small
Hard to believe this was 10 years ago.
Hard to believe this was almost 17 years ago. I remember watching it on TV (in Miami) and going ape shit when Pudge held onto that ball.
hard to believe this was almost 21 years ago

Willis throwing 59 fastballs haha
Hahahah the radar was so off. I think the old ones couldnt pick him up. His first years he was 89-93 very occasionally 95. But after his 22 win season he never hit over 90.
