Now that is a damned interesting design. Handpiece on rails next to a a vertical lap spewing grit. Strange but it must work. Thanks for these machine reviews, they are eye-opening!

Dop holder looks like watchmaker collet B8 / spindle, along with a depth stop, also from watchmaker lathe equipment. this machine set~up looks very similar to a tool bit grinder made by Agathon or Deckel, also Swiss. looks like a mutation of such machines, adapted for faceting. Also note the flexible tool design approach, allowing multiple geometries, also a staple of swiss watchmaking equipment, such as Schaublin 70 . Craftsman’s adaptability to different tasks. I am by no mean a specialist of such machines. I use watchmaking equipment, not as a watchmaker, but as a design engineer. very inspiring.

You are exactly correct. These are essentially watch makers lathes adapted for gemstones. I’ve seen pics of early bunters and they were making watch lathes as well.

Thanks Justin. Great video of a fabulous machine.
I have a Boremasters Tiplap carbide lapping machine that works in a very similar manner although the work holding element is captive on the horizontal bar. It would be nice to be able to lift it off like on the Bunter.

Thanks for this video. I have the same machine, but I lost the hand piece that holds the stone. Where can I get it?
    Thank you

There is a newer company in Geneva making similar machines. I’m not sure if there Handpiece is directly compatible with the Bunter but it’s worth asking. They are quite expensive though. www.rmsa.ch

Can anyone suggest where to look for used ones? I understand they don't make these any more, unfortunately :-(

Really the only place to find these is in the used market of Geneva but they are extremely rare. In the last 7 years I’ve only know of three to be available. There is a company that makes them still called Regis Mauron SA www.rmsa.ch . I think we inquired a year or two ago and a new machine with handpiece, dops, and laps was over $20,000

You need to keep an eye on the used market in Geneva. Thats the only way.
