That's what he gets for hating dogs and has to watch Joey bang his wife for the remainder of his dog days. Why is he a dog I dunno he pissed off Phoebe or destroyed Gladys or Glynnis cursing him, this occult perspective delves into Phoebe's new age religion she always seemed like a written off charmed character. To wit, when Cheers was ending, the producers considered doing a spinoff of Norm or Cliff. They soon realized this would be a bad idea as the one liners they gave was great once or twice a show (even about to carry a few episodes over 11 years) but, every week, no. So they went to the guy who instead of one liners was the reactor of the show. And thus Fraser was born.

In Friends everyone's arc was completed except that of Joey's.
Monica : She wanted baby, a chef career, a relationship. And she got it all at the end.
Chandler: Hated his job, wanted a partner. He got a job he loved and married a woman he loved.
Ross: He wanted to be married. He had a huge unresolved crush on Rachel. He got it all at the end.
Rachel: She wanted to be independent and not be the spoiled daddy's little girl. She was a successful executive and a responsible mother at the end.
Phoebe: She just wanted a family of her own. And she got it at the end.
But Joey neither had a stable relationship nor a successful acting career at the end. So the spinoff attempted to address it.
But the big problem was they literally forgot FRIENDS. I mean Joey was getting married and there is no mention of his friends ?
IMO, they could have ended in Season 2 with his marriage and they should have announced all his friends are coming to the wedding. The viewership would have skyrocketed and it would be a good ending.

    • @dvchel
      @dvchel 4 года назад +167

@libby young To simply put it, the writers *never* got it that the magic ensemble of Aniston, Schwimmer, Perry, Cox, Kudrow and of course LeBlanc is what made Friends able to exist for 10 seasons and becoming so popular the way it did. Even though Friends was averaging in the number of "accolades" in comparison to other sitcoms, like Everybody Loves Raymond and the Larry Summers Show, the ratings were still far larger than many others in part of the popularity and "talent" of the cast members.
The writers thought that Friends would be able to exist without the six actors complete. And it's not the first time. Back when the actors went for a pay-raise going to $250.000 per episode, both NBC, WB and many of the producers/writers sought to exclude some of the actors and replacing them. Didn't work. They were all very professional, didn't budge and continued their work.
Last but not least, both Matt LeBlanc and Kevin Bright wanted to give Joey a fair chance at becoming a complete character. However, the plug was pulled once Joey's character kept going in the wrong direction.

Perhaps including College too. Concerning this is where Rachel and Monica had lost touch with each other (in a prelude to the Pilot) and we get to meet Chandler etc. It would further help creating a more organic, interesting and meaningful backstory to Ross & Rachel's arc. @TheSherBru Valid point. However, another "great" reason why it was known Joey the spin-off was going to fail beforehand was due to the flanderization of his character at the end of Friends. His was the worst out of all. He began in season 1 as a street-smart guy. Towards the end in season 10 he was in serious need of a supervisor. Compare this to the great development you saw in season 8 when Joey finally came to understand women on a different level, it was disappointing to see the writers then made the decision to dumb him down again to a person unable to speak French. These poor decisions left Joey with not much to stand on his own. His character definitely should have been written more complete by the show's end. Then again, often money and greed rules in terms of deciding that Friends wasn't enough by Warner Brothers and NBC.

They did got the _"will they or won't they"_ paradigm between Ted and Robin better than Ross and Rachel in Friends. Not to forget the drama coming off right, whereas in Friends it was coming off cheesy very often.
After Rachel had given birth to her child with Ross by her side, millions upon millions had the desire and wanting to see these two starting to build on their relationship again. However, the creators made the decision to throw Joey in the equation because they liked playing with fire, even though it made no sense at that moment in time of Friends - what else, you get burned!
The reason why, in addition to the ending of HIMYM, it continues to amaze me how writers, producers and creators can be so out of touch with the public and what it wants. Their incompetence just left too much open for the imagination.

The problem was that none of Friends characters have their own charisma and lives, they don't work by themselves, they need the others to exist. Have you been in a group of friends that works super awesome but the individual lives of each one of the persons is really boring, lame, dull, or just not funny? Have you been in a group of like 6 or 7 friends where you only have fun when you ALL hang out together, but if it was only you and another dude or dudette from the group it's just not the same (even if it's the funny one)? Welcome to the answer on why Joey didn't work, and a similar premise will never work.

Joey's character never evolved from the womanizer/dumb/optimistic guy. That problem was already in Friends and carried over to Joey, that's why he couldn't be a lead. There was nothing going for him. This video failed to touch on that issue.
All the other characters had grown up by the end of the series, Joey stayed the same. It was even a recurring joke in the series, even by the end of it Joey can't deal with Chandler and Monica moving to a new house and Chandler says they got a spare room for Joey, and he gets all happy kiddy like. The show touched early on (and again a few seasons later with that girl Mon and Rach wanted Joey to date because they liked her) how he wanted to have a deeper relationship and find love, the girls left him and he went back to square one. The writers never explored that issue. Joey stayed the womanizer from the start of the series to the end of it, even though he could evolve from that.
Chandler got over his fears of serious relationships, made peace with his father. Monica got the family she always wanted and Richard didn't want to give her. Rachel became successful with her own career. Ross resolved his issues with Rachel and got back with her, which was what he always wanted. Phoebe also had the same kind of problem as Joey, she loved David but he left. She found love with Mike and settled down with him. They all started a new chapter in their lives, and Joey was put to the side.

In season 4-5 of Friends (London and the following few episodes) they show the viewers not only how much Joey cares about his friends, but how much he loves his life in its current state and how he hates changes. This not only makes the Joey show improbable but also impossible, as he nearly broke down when he lived in the big apartment and when Chandler moved out. There is no possible way for that same character to abandon his friends, family, and life to live in L.A. to follow his career which was always second to him behind the people in his life that mattered most.

Theoretically, a spinoff about Monica and Chandler's family life would have probably been better (or at least easier to manage from a writer's perspective).
After they got together and made their relationship known to the other friends, their individual storylines started to merge and they ended up focusing on their romance and daily life rather than individual "misadventures".
Basically, they could have easily carried the weight of a show on their own because they seem more like protagonists and not simply side characters. Joey, however? He was created as a side character (like Phoebe) and was meant to stay that way.
That said, I'm glad that they didn't make another spinoff with Monica and Chandler, trying to "resuscitate" a show that is already over is 99% of the time a bad idea.

Mondler raising the twins would’ve been interesting to see, or Mike and Phoebe since she wanted her own kids after seeing Mondler’s set of twins, or even Roschel raising Emma since they got back together (for the 100th time). But…well…ultimately it felt like Joey regressed in a lot of ways, and his stupidity was amped up a bit too high. And I didn’t care a thing about the other new main characters, whereas the show was wanting to put a ton of focus on them. Bleh.

Referring as an example to the season 9 plot of Rachel & Joey. Knowing it just made no sense on the basis of seasons 1-7, where Rachel never showed any interest in his manners, behaviour or personality. It was Ross all the way for the most part.
And moments like season 9 are where Ross & Rachel should have slowly and steadily come back together. You know, to make the final reunion feel more organic and meaningful. With the 3x divorces behind you, and seeming to slowly drift apart over the most simplest of issues, just didn't felt right on the basis of watching seasons 1-3 etc.

First of all there shouldn't have been any spin-off. I remember what Matthew Perry said in an interview and I agree with him. He said something like- we are afraid to make another season or spin- off because the level we set was so high and I am afraid that we don't fall down (something like this). Plus if they had to make a spin-off I would have liked a short film which showed all the friends a few years later together drinking coffee at central perk and talking about their day. It should have been revealed that they hung out everyday one time in central perk and were still very very close friends. And Joey would also have ended up with someone.
Anyways I like the friends reunion and I am glad they decided to only show the whole cast talking and an interview, watching bloopers, treading scripts etc. And not any crap

When I heard of this spinoff, I thought, "Finally! Joey's going to grow up and be more than the sidekick!" I thought about what would challenge him the most and also fit his character the most, from what we knew of him. While living in New York, he gets a phone call from a girl he'd dated for a few months. She tells him she's had a baby and it's his. He councils with his friends (cameo, like 90210 did for Melrose Place's first episode), takes a DNA test and decides to go to LA to man-up (as foreshadowed) and ask her to marry him.
She won't marry someone she barely knows, and she won't leave LA, because her single dad is there. Joey was the one to hate change the most and the least likely to leave his friends (his family), but, as hard as it is, he can't abandon his daughter/son and decides to stay. While in LA, he may as well kill two birds with one stone by also trying to improve his career and becoming successful for his child.
This concept opened so many doors for humour, warmth, tension, meaningful romance, blunders and character growth.
It was pretty disappointing that the writers threw the character under the bus, for cheap laughs.

Honestly, I think that a spinoff about Joey could've been really good if it was done right.
Because Joey wasn't *just* a character for comedic relief and support, even if that's what he served for the original show.
He had things that could've been explored and developed on. He had issues with commitment in relationships, his potential in acting, his struggling with growing up.
The Joey spinoff could've been great if it touched on the lines of a dramedy if they kept his character intact and just fleshed out his life more instead of tearing it apart.
It might've been really entertaining to see how Joey somehow ended up in some weird conflicts that he managed to solve despite his lack of common sense, like his own subplots in some of the Friends episodes.
There could've been overarching plotlines about one or two main love interests throughout the show that made him think about settling down as he wrestled with getting older. I would've loved to see him have phone calls with Chandler and Phoebe about the things he was going through and asking for advice.
I dunno. I don't think that a Friends spinoff with Joey wasn't wanted. I just don't think it made it something people didn't know they wanted.

  • @Violet_Beauregard

Joey came right after the end of Friends, people were not ready to see only him without the rest of the gang, but the show was not so bad as you said actually! I kinda liked it back then and I've just started a rewatch out of curiosity cause I didn't remember much of it... it actually made me laugh more than once already! Joey is not deprissing AT ALL, the fact that he can't make friends in LA is very well explained in the show itself... It's much harder to make new friends when you're grown up and LA is very different from NY, as Joey said "In NY I could approach people in the street, here in LA everybody drives a car, how do you meet people?". I find it also logical that Joey wanted to try something different as all of his NY friends had moved on in life (got married, had kids, had the job of their dreams...) remember Monica and Chandler left the apartment at the end of the show? So why was Joey supposed not to try something different as well? He's an actor after all, it's only logical that he would try to move to LA at a certain point and see if he had any chances there. This doesn't mean that he won't go back to NY at some point or that he's not calling his friends. I think it would've have been just pathetic to have the show with him on the phone with his friends! And the fact that we don't see him calling them it doesn't mean he didn't and that he's not in touch with them anymore. Most of Friends' characters have really changed in the course of the show, while Joey was the only one who didn't evolve, didn't have a decent carrier and didn't find love. This could've been Joey's chance if only people weren't so nostalgic and narrow-minded. What I didn't like about Joey was the fact that they cast Adam Goldberg as a recurrent character when he had already played one in Friends (remember Eddie, Chandler's weird roommate?). Also Joey's look seems to be very different from Friends, why is he wearing all these shirts, trousers and shiney shoes now? Apart from that, I'm enjoying it very much at the moment and I suggest to give it a try if you can find it.

Here's the thing...the approach the show creators took with "Joey" wasn't actually weird. In fact there was a hugely successful precedent on the same network, "Frasier". NBC took Kelsey Grammar's character from Cheers (like Friends, a very popular ensemble comedy) and moved him across the country. Because Frasier Crane transitioned from being a supporting character to a lead character, his personality broadened to shoulder the new responsibility. The new Frasier Crane was a little more of a loser. Sometimes even a bit of a buffoon. Grammar is an excellent comic actor who made these new character traits work.
And like "Joey", "Frasier" didn't look or feel like its predecessor. Frasier's life back in Boston wasn't heavily referenced either. "Frasier" turned to be a huge success for the network, so it wasn't that crazy to think that "Joey" could be also since it followed a similar formula.
In the end "Joey" suffered from the same things most failed shows suffer from...lackluster cast, poor writing and weak chemistry. Going back to the "Frasier" example, if the Niles Crane character had been given to anyone other than David Hyde Pierce, that show might not have lasted that long. Pierce is an superb comic actor who had excellent chemistry with Kelsey Grammar. That pairing helped make the show a success. Unfortunately Matt LeBlanc didn't have someone as skilled to play off of. It made all the difference.

He obviously didn't need that money considering how much he STILL makes from "Friends" royalties. He NEVER had to do the spinoff. It was a bad decision altogether and that's why none of the other actors agreed to do one without the original showrunners.

    • @dvchel

@TechJunkie He didn't need the money indeed, but maybe he was hopeful and convinced on the approach by Kevin Bright and some of the other writers/producers who approached him about the spin-off. If there is anyone to blame it is literally Warner Brothers and the producers/writers themselves for being greedy and lacking the vision to complete Joey's character within the Friends era of 1994-2004.
Because, you had over 200 episodes in total, and there were many fun and interesting storylines/developments that were perfectly attributable to him. In season 8 you saw the tip of the ice berg when he finally began to understand women on another level. However, it was a disappointment that it came at the expense of deciding to continue dragging on with Ross and Rachel's relationship, and afterwards dumbing him down again with episodes such as the inability to speak French.

    A few things I remember:
    - That green screen they use behind the taxi cab to mimic driving is unbearable.
    - Joey's new sycophant friend that enters in later episodes is also unbearable.
    - Matt LeBlanc, who was married at the time, had an affair with his co-star. It ended his marriage and he continued with a relationship with that actress.
    - "Joey" occurred in a dark time for NBC, a time that dropped them from being a leading primetime network. Conan O'Brien, who was still host of Late Night, did a song bit about how NBC was "going down the crapper" and had terrible shows in prime time. The same night he did that bit, Matt LeBlanc was a guest to promote "Joey."

I think another issue is, as with the ending of almost every sitcom, their ushers in a new era of tv. A new era of understanding, and a new era of the sitcom itself. But too many of the spin-offs try to skill live in the world of the decade that their home show lived in. Or they try to convert the spin-off into the modern day without any explanation of why/how the setup of the spinoff came to be.

Also, some of Joey's shenanigans were just too far-fetched at that point in the 00s. Hence, the spin-off losing out on other more relatable alternatives, such as Two And A Half Men, or TBBT etc.

The problem with "Joey " is it relied on a comic relief character to hold a show on there own, Joey is a great character but a whole show based on him is abit too much the only way it would of worked is if there was guest appearances from the cast in the first 2 seasons to slowly let Joey completely go on his own

    How to do Joey correctly
    Season 1 Joey is Joey
Season 2 Joey starts to display hints of depression from missing his friends in NY. Chandler is unsuccessful in arranging a visit while Phoebe always answers Joey's phone calls
Season 3 moderate depression here and there as we begin to see Joey change a little bit. Monica comes to visit for a couple of days needing a break from screaming toddlers
Season 4 Joey begins to grow up a little bit. He finds himself a steady girlfriend without things getting too serious. I mean, it's Joey after all
Season 5 Joey's romantic life becomes a little bit more serious and he lands the lead role in a promising movie. Ross and Rachel have a honeymoon pit stop in LA to see Joey. They're headed on a cruise or something idk.
Season 6 Joey finally begins to find his fame and fortune and Chandler visits to attend the premier of Joey's movie. Joey writes him a fat check from the movie advance paychecks in order to finally repay his debts, plus a little something extra. Chandler shits his pants when he sees the total
Season 7 Joey struggles to find balance between his fame and remaining the humble and grounded Joey we all love
Season 8 Joey has had a few movies to his credit now and spends Thanksgiving in NY with everybody at Chandler and Monica's house. Obviously, this is off-screen
Season 9 Joey gets married due to a humorous pregnancy scare, finding himself hell bent on not raising a bastard child like his friend Ross (who has been giving advice over the phone).
The ceremony is held in NY where Gunther serves as the caterer (Monica is far too slammed).
Season 10 Joey and his wife purchase a "second home" in NY. Everybody thinks the deal is hush hush to allow Joey an escape to privacy but, in the series finale, it is revealed that Joey's new vacation home is across the street from Chandler and Monica who are equally surprised that the new neighbor is actually Joey.
And of course, Joey becomes a dad for real.
The idea comes up for Joey's wife and children to remain in NY permanently while Joey will maintain an apartment in LA to use whenever he is working but the kids are better off attending the same private schools as Chandler and Monica's kids
Yes, I played it fast and loose with the cameos. However, this is Joey we're talking about. No matter what, he's gonna be grounded and loyal to his 5 best friends from Central Perk, and they're always going to be supportive of him.
So, Joey is a mega movie star. He does settle down to have a family as normal as possible but, he's still Joey, so he vacations in NY as often as he can where he gets to see everyone while he's there.

Here's how bad Warner Bros. wants to act like "Joey" doesn't exist: It never released the second season on DVD in the U.S. I had to import my copy from Amazon Canada.
