i was going to do a diy build of the ssl bus comp. In the end I decided not to take the effort because after extensive use of my rnc I found out it was (way)better and more to my taste than any ssl plugin on the mix bus. You have to tweak around, get to know it, but the result is THERE ! when mastering with two units for dual mono the results are stellar.
Funny, I was looking into these a lot a year or so ago. Then I stopped, never spoke or even thought about it again. But then a week ago I bought one, now it's in every suggestion from anything Google. Awesome compressor though ;)
May I ask how you have it connected? I'm not getting any signal. I have two. They worked in the past but I'm not sure which kind of cables I used. It seems common sense.. TRS from the Preamp IN to the RNC, TRS OUT to the DAC's SEND/RECEIVE.
Superb on female vocals , very warm With clarity. However on the full mix , it dampens the sound makes the acoustic guitars sound muffled and muted . I also use this compressor and use it as a thickener . Nice song BTW 😊

So I have the RNC 1773 and I seem to only get it to work when the threshold is -40 and the ratio Is 25:1 or slightly under. I’ve got the 1773 going through an insert on my Allen & Heath Zed 14 so not sure why it’s the gain reduction is working. Any tips or ideas as to what could be happening?
prufrockrenegade thank you! The song is called „Down by the Salley Gardens“ which is actually a poem by William Butler Yeats. There are quite some songs based on this poem and Maura O’Conell recorded a great version of it in the 90s. The song in this video is our rendition, basically a cover of Maura‘s version.

I've been trying desperately to hook this up to track vocals live in logic pro. I've been using TRS cables into the inputs and outputs of both the compressor and interface. Would you recommend me going out and buying an XLR to TRS converter or just using TS cables? Really confused some feedback would be much appreciated!
+longboardguy2788 Hooking up the RNC to gear other than TRS inserts (like on mixing boards) must be done with a pair of TS (Tip-Sleeve) jacks for each RNC channel. Thus, the full ste- reo hook-up of an RNC must be done with four TS 1/4'' cables. Hooking up the RNC to balanced lines with TRS 1/4'' plugs will not work.
When I set a Compressor I Know where to start then slowly turn the knobs until the unit and my imagination come togather. This video is as a Caveman Compresses
Hi . Ive just bought one of these and wondered how you hook it up to old multitrack? Ive got a Tascam 2488 neo , which has effect sends 1 and 2 which are unbalanced outputs and then it somehow wants to come out of the RNC and into the channel inputs on the Tascam. I have an idea but just want to be sure of the type of leads to get before It order them . If anyone can help that would be great .
They should come back to your returns, or if you want to record only the compression to another channel of you prefer and then you can mix between the comp channel and the original signal as in parallel compression.
Not really! The GRL is more like a second threshold controller for the compressor. While the ‘reg- ular’ threshold controller tells the compressor when to start working, the GRL controller tells it when to compress no further. The „Super Nice“ mode of the RNC is for near invisible compression. This mode cascades three stereo compressors in series to reduce compression artifacts. Even with high gain reduction you can‘t hear the typical „pumping“ effect.
can anyone explain which cables should I use, I've hooked this up with both stereo and mono cables and still haven't been able to make it work, don't really understand the whole tip=in, ring=out stuff, what does that mean. Please really want to use this, I would really appreciate some help here, thanks!
You can use it in 3 ways (first 2 are for insert channels) 1. with a standard Stereo TRS cable (TRS: Tip-Ring-Sleve) on each input channel as an insert (e.g. on a mixing console): www.thomann.de/gb/the_sssnake_spp2030.htm 2. with a Y- Insert Cable (one connector for the input and one for the output) like this: www.thomann.de/gb/the_sssnake_ypp2010.htm 3. with 4 unbalanced Patch cables (Mono) to use it with a Preamp/Audio Interface. Something like this: www.thomann.de/gb/cordial_ccfi_09_pp.htm
OK great, and with the 4 unbalanced patch cables, they can be hooked up in any direction, I mean 'cuz both ends of the cable are exactly the same right?, it's the whole tip=in, ring=out stuff that confuses me. And the same with the two other types of cable right? Thanks for getting back to me
yes right, the 4 unbalanced cables can be connected in any direction. FMR did special thing with the tip=in, ring=out option: if you want to use the compressor as an insert on a mixing console you simply can use just one stereo cable hooked up to each input of the RNC. It serves both, input and output. So you don't need another cable for the outputs. A stereo cable is also called "Balanced cable" or "TRS cable" where T=Tip and R=Ring. FMR uses the Tip as Input and Ring as Output.

I can’t see much reason to ever turn off the Super Nice Mode. It pretty much always sounded better with it on. You get the same amount of compression but with less artifacts. It’s almost like it’s mixing the dry signal back in or something, but I figure if it was parallel compression they would call it that.
