The Lou Smith character could’ve been a rehab arc vs. re-abandoning his son again, where Ben Vereen could’ve been signed for multiple episodes to try and be part of Will’s future while renouncing or redeeming his past misdeeds. Unfortunately, they basically had dude come back for 20 minutes to get Will to remind Phil he wasn’t his father, yet by the end, we’re reminded that Phil is the closest thing to a father he will ever have.

Perhaps this episode just reminds everyone that your birth dad ceases being your real dad once he no longer acknowledges the family he created, while men like Uncle Phil exist to show that you don't have to be a birth father to be a true father, especially since you volunteered your home to a wayward boy even if he disagreed with his lifestyle most of the time.
Those are hard to watch but a great showcase of Will Smith's dramatic acting. They used clips from the speed episode for an annual multimedia presentation on the dangers of drug and alcohol abuse. The dance where Carlton speed dances and passes out as well as Will's apology to everyone. Gets you right in the feels. :(

I certainly never would've thumbed my nose at a father figure like Uncle Phil in my life, it would've been great to just experience that sense of closeness...I knew even though Uncle Phil found Will annoying, he still loved him like his own biological son, and that's something you certainly just wanna secretly lock away in a little box in your heart and keep it there for as long as it lasts.

When will said "how come he don't want me man" I felt that, that was just heartbreaking, that's something a lot of people can relate too from all different walks of life!
marvin braswell actually that scene was not planned. Will was originally supposed to just shrug off his father leaving again and act like he didn't care. The scene that we see here is actually Will Smith projecting his personal experience and his anger against his own father who walked out on him.

I always thought Will got a raw deal in that pill episode. Some weird dude pretty much shoved those in his hand and left. Will just threw them in his locker because he was kinda caught off guard. Carlton's the one who took a handful without even knowing what they were...
That was the point. The lesson to be learned is NEVER take unidentified pills which is what Vivian told Carlton in the hospital earlier in that episode. Also, Will knew exactly what they were when he took the pills from that kid, they were not 'shoved in his hand'. He could have said no or threw them away.
This was such a good show when I was younger and watching this made me feel emotional, Will's biological Father reminded me of my own Father who was similar to this...in real life a lot of youngsters are experiencing the same thing and it's quite humbling indeed. This was a great show indeed and found it quite funny indeed, all the times Jazz was thrown out of the house, all of Carlton's cheesy antics and Will's fat jokes about Uncle Phil. It was nice to know that Uncle Phil secretly loved Will, even when his own Father wouldn't and was never there. Having such a warm and caring love and fun filled family is somewhat of a very rare commodity.
Yeah, I wish that Will said that he learned how to love his children through Uncle Phil, but he was so hurt at the moment and thinking of himself. A common thing for young people to do.
Just for the record, WIll's real life Biological father has always been around with him, in fact his career would never have taken off without his fathers helping hand. It's also a testament to WIll Smith's acting in that the scene hit home so well despite him having had both parents in his life.

Derek Langley i can understand why your daughter may not want to accept you as a part of her life. you can earn her trust, though. it’ll take a lot of time, and a lot of patience, but through kindness and gentleness you can show her that you love her and want to be a functioning part of her life. don’t get angry at her; it may be frustrating, but if you show her that you’re angry at her she won’t want to trust you and will try to distance herself from you. just be patient, she will eventually understand that you love her and want to be there for her. :)

It never mattered how much Will made fun of Carlton... that was his boy at the end of the day in any episode that involved him having his back or showing emotion for him. Man i miss this show !
The scene about the pills was done very well. It really shined a light on how drugs can hurt not just you but the people around you. Acting was superb. But the scene with his father leaving and when he is talking with uncle Phil that’s when I knew that this guy is going to be a great actor. The issues in these scenes are still relevant today and I don’t think many shows in 2019 emulate these issues like this show did and many other shows during that time.

Season 4 episode 24 was a milestone in Wills life in my opinion. To this day I cant watch him say "how come he dont want me man?" without tearing up. I think that's when movie producers were saying "Damn... this kid has a promising future in movies" Will Smith was born for this.
Lot of little things in that lou scene... suring the "some business come down" first exchange, you see will smile disapearing slowly, a little incomprehension at first that disapear completly at the "you understand". The tense "yeah that's cool i understand" while he process everything, containing himself from rage. The tense laugh and little smile he give, to hide his disapointement at "i'll give you the details" time. Then the "it was great seeing you son" followed by a simple "yeah me too" and since he cannot find any rage, just sadness, he add the "lou" putting a wall between him and his father, clearly glaring at him with disgust. The attempt to protect himself the way he always did, with some humoristic comeback. Uncle phil telling him "it's all right to be angry" but will don't want to give his father satisfaction so he keep the mask some seconds more... He fight it back wile showing to uncle phil that he bought his dad a resent cause he want to show off he is not like his father, he refuse to throw it an put it nicely on the table. His past come back in his mind and his rage build up, until he explode. He come back again with the mask a last time.... thn=en it's over he can't take it anymore.
I really like how in the pills scene, Uncle Phil gave Will shit for what he did. No excuses nothing and had him apologize to the family. But at the end he hugged Will because he could see he was genuinely sorry. That is true love and true parenting.
Uncle Phil is the best dad. One to be admired and emulated. RIP

The scene with his dad makes me cry Every time
Season 4 episode 24 was a milestone in Wills life in my opinion. To this day I cant watch him say "how come he dont want me man?" without tearing up. I think that's when movie producers were saying "Damn... this kid has a promising future in movies" Will Smith was born for this.
I've seen that scene where Will's dad leaves 1000 times, but every time it hits me just as hard.
One of my favourite moments in tv history.

No Doubt Will Smith Acted Very Emotional Sentimental Scenes.
Lot of little things in that lou scene...
suring the "some business come down" first exchange, you see will smile disapearing slowly, a little incomprehension at first that disapear completly at the "you understand".
The tense "yeah that's cool i understand" while he process everything, containing himself from rage.
The tense laugh and little smile he give, to hide his disapointement at "i'll give you the details" time.
Then the "it was great seeing you son" followed by a simple "yeah me too" and since he cannot find any rage, just sadness, he add the "lou" putting a wall between him and his father, clearly glaring at him with disgust.
The attempt to protect himself the way he always did, with some humoristic comeback.
Uncle phil telling him "it's all right to be angry" but will don't want to give his father satisfaction so he keep the mask some seconds more...
He fight it back wile showing to uncle phil that he bought his dad a resent cause he want to show off he is not like his father, he refuse to throw it an put it nicely on the table.
His past come back in his mind and his rage build up, until he explode.
He come back again with the mask a last time.... thn=en it's over he can't take it anymore.
I really like how in the pills scene, Uncle Phil gave Will shit for what he did. No excuses nothing and had him apologize to the family. But at the end he hugged Will because he could see he was genuinely sorry. That is true love and true parenting.
