If You allow me, a funny memory. It was a couple of years ago, I was working in Milton Keynes, and I remember the fascination of a British bus driver when he got the only Mercedes Bus in his entire company. He actually told me how impressed he was. I told him that I like more British buses, it is hard to see a British bus in Romania, we have Mercs, in all major cites.

When you turn on the lights in the bus, don't turn on the third one from the left (with the horizontal line on it). That's your driver's cabin light, you'll see better with it off ;)

is it possible that you had the hand brake activated on the night drive? There is a red light on the dashboard that never went out. Maybe thats why the bus sounded so strange. I am not sure.
