This is a single-segment (RTA) Any% speedrun of the Japanese version of Final Fantasy Tactics, completed in 4 hours, 12 minutes, and 22 seconds. This run was obtained on April 17th, 2014. This run attempts to complete the game as fast as possible, timed from Power On to The End, with no restrictions. Similar to the North American Any% category, this run uses Math Skill to complete the game as fast as possible. However, there are several version differences that make the runs a tad bit different. For the purposes of this run, the main differences are:
    1. Faster text, most noticeably in cutscenes where the text cannot be advanced manually.
    2. The job level requirements for unlocking Calculator are higher.
    3. The job points required to reach each job level are higher. Combined with point #2, there is much more grinding needed to unlock the Calculator class in this version.
    4. Certain bosses are stronger (either by having more HP, or in the case of Wiegraf 2 / 3, having more SPD).
    5. There is an exclusive glitch where, by soft-resetting during the tutorial, you gain access to 99 of every item in the game in the Fur Shop in Ch. 3.
The fifth point is extremely important for this run, as it allows you buy many items you don’t normally have access to very early on, such as the Faith Rod, Secret Clothes, Cursed Ring, and more. This makes Ch. 3 & Ch. 4 much faster and much more consistent. Although the timing standards between the versions vary, running this version & this category is the overall fastest way of completing the game.
In addition to the Fur Shop Glitch, this run also makes use of the JP-Scroll glitch, which allows you to underflow your JP in certain classes to learn many abilities very quickly. JP-Scroll works slightly different on the Japanese version as far as which abilities you use to underflow, but overall, it allows you to scroll the same classes as you would in the North American version. The main difference is that scrolling Orlandu is easier, allowing for more consistent access to his powerful (and faster) abilities.
I won’t provide full comments on every battle for this run (as I did in my NA Any% run), but a few key points:
    1. I fight two random encounters in this run, as it is faster than reloading to grind in a storyline battle if an encounter is obtained (and far more consistent). The first encounter I get features a fight against a single Goblin, which (to my knowledge) is a 1/256 chance, and the best possible fight you can get! The second encounter also features fairly good luck, only containing 2 additional enemies besides the Goblin. I bring an extra Wizard just in case I get an encounter with 5 additional enemies in it.
    2. I invite a Thief at Dorter Trade City II, as you need a unit with Secret Hunt set in order to gain access to the Fur Shop in Ch. 3. The fight itself goes somewhat poorly; however, under ideal circumstances, it is much faster than unlocking Thief on a generic unit by using propositions.
    3. In Ch.4, I cross all 5 green dots from Limberry to Igros in one attempt, as it is faster (via less saving) and more consistent due to the way the random encounter algorithm works.
    4. At the battle of Outside Murond in Ch.4, I face an enemy Priest with MP Switch - which is quite rare! It cost a bit of time, but it’s more amusing than anything else.
Overall, this run is quite good, but still improvable. There were 5 random encounters, and 8 additional turns of Math Skill - which account for a majority of the luck-related time loss in this run. There were also plenty of mistakes with miscalculating damage, and using Bolt 3 when I should have used Flare, or Flare when I should have used Holy, and so forth. However, I am very satisfied with this run, and will not return it to it anytime soon (unless it gets beaten!). I would love for aspiring Japanese runners to pick this game up, because as of right now, there are essentially zero active runners of FFT on Nico (or elsewhere, for that matter).
Thank you for watching! If you enjoyed this run, feel free to check me out elsewhere:

This is great. By Googling some random quote from this video, I was able to find the entire game script in Japanese. That site also has all sorts of stat lists. Now I get to experience FFT while sidestepping the original wonky PS1 translation and the ornate PSP translation, read the game script at my leisure, and watch this video to view the cutscenes and hear the music (a little bit, anyway).

Do you have any idea how to play the Japanese version on a computer to record like this? I'm in the US.

    裏技使用は元より、最後エンディングの途中の部分を飛ばしてタイマーカウントしていましたね…😱
    私が『PS1』で最初に手に入れたソフトなので、その部分はわかりますよ──😅

      PS版の有名な裏技です。
