thanx for the info , I ride a Suzuki Vz800 , I'm thinkn most if not all info you gave will relate , gonna change my oil for the first time... been sending it to a mechanic , over that ... thankx again
Glad to help. Sad thing is I sold my bike. I miss it a lot! But we were moving and I didn't want to have to worry about it during the move. I'll buy a bike again one of these days. I love to ride!
I never changed the coolant in mine. I just sold this bike about a month ago. Maybe someone else can answer? There seems to be a lack of video content on street bike service and maintenance. I should have done more videos! 🤨🤷🏼♂️
Motorcycles with a wet clutch need oil designed specifically for motorcycles, not cars. Most auto parts stores carry it. You can even find it at Walmart.
I swear to God my 2003 intruder looks almost the same as yours ,if not for the custom paint job and custom made seat to match, they would look identical to one another. I have always hade a suzuki since I was old enough to have one in my name, My father made me start out on a FJ-1200 wait , I mean when I turned 16 years old my father went out and bought me a brand new Yamaha FJ-1200. I loved that bike and it just happened to be one of if not the fastest bikes in my hometown, after a couple of tickets my father told me that if i ever even got a ticket for going five mph too fast that he would sale my bike, but that turned out to be a good thing, hell it might have even saved my life a couple of times, unfortunately I lost a couple of friends back in high school because of motorcycle accidents that happened while they were drag racing, After l lost my second friend my father and I had a talk, it was probably one of the most important talks that we had ever had. I decided to sale the FJ- rocket that was the name of my bike, I sold it the first day I told people at school that I was really selling it for ten thousand dollars, After all the custom work that my father and I put into that bike we ended up just about getting what we had in it, we might have actually lost a couple hundred because of my speeding tickets but it was all good, out of everyone in my school that wanted to get that bike, it ended up going to this kid that I played football against, we started playing against each other in pop warner and all the way through high school ball. Me and him become best of friends he was even the best man at my wedding, well anyways I love just about any kinda of motorcycle new or older ,AMERICAN MUCLE TO FARN HUSTLE, But please remember Regardless of whatever your ridding from 49cc to 2000cc when a 4000 pound metal car hits you head on you can never possibly win, im not saying don't enjoy yourself but just give yourself a fighting chance, watch out and dont take advantage that just because you have crossed that center lane a thousands times, that one of these days there's not going to be something comeing in that other lane, sorry I'm not trying to bring anyone down, But I have seen first hand from my own set of eyes just how quick a night of fun turns into a tragedy in a matter of seconds! Peace out and hay if it only takes one onehundrth of a second to look twice before crossing over into that other lane why would you not do it?
Hi there, Can you give me your opinion on how reliable the bike has been for you and any problems you’ve had with it? I’m in the process of buying one and would appreciate any help you can give me. Cheers in anticipation 👍 Mark
I had zero issues while I owned this bike for 3 years. I rode it almost daily with exception of winter days with temps below 38 (I’m a fair weather rider). My advice would be to use ethanol free gas during the winter months when your riding days are more limited or if you are storing the bike. Turn the fuel supply off and let it burn up the fuel in the carbs. This will keep it from getting clogged and needing work that can be expensive. Hope you get the bike. You’re going love it!
Why do they put oil filters horizontally? Still best to fill them up quick to the top with new oil, then after they soak it up (5 minutes it will appear to be empty again) spin it on quick.
Hey Troy thanks for the video! I have the same bike and year. I had a question about the carbs. My bike starts up but has a hard time running for a few minutes without it dying. And it has a hard time idling. Could that be a carb issue? Since you have the same bike I thought maybe you've done that.
That is very likely a carb issue. If you’ve already checked the air filter then it’s probably time for a carb rebuild. With this being a twin carb system I would recommend taking it to a service center. Best to have that done professionally. One way to avoid carb issues is to turn off the fuel switch and run all the gas out of the line before storing for the winter. That keeps the points from corroding and makes for lower maintenance costs in the end. This is true for lawnmowers, weed trimmers, etc as well.
Mine is a 1999 vl1500 and it does the same thing. Also backfires. I've changed plugs, boots, air filter. And it's still backfiring. However, here's the real kicker. My clutch keeps getting air in the line. At first I thought it was the slave cylinder so I had it replaced. Replaced my master cylinder as well. Still gets air and I have to stop, pull the cover off, and bleed the slave cylinder.
the electrical and fuel are 2 different systems. turn off the fuel has no affect on the electrical. get real here. the real problem is the shitty gas. use a fuel additive that kills ethanol. @@troysgarage
Just bought the same bike as my very first bike. Thanks for the clear instructions on how to do this. Random question, are the rear view mirrors move-able?? i dunno if mine are just hard stuck in their position for being an old bike, but im afraid that i'm going to break the damn things when i try to adjust it. Nice video!
+Kenneth Ng great purchase and thanks for the kudos! If you back off the nut at the mounting point (near the handlebars) then you can move the in or out. The up and down adjustment I'm sure is also possible but I've never needed to do that so not sure. Comment back if you figure it out. Let's help the other guys/gals here too. 👍🏼
I too was insane and rode year round. My temp limit was 38 degrees. Below that was simply too cold for the gear I had. I can’t remember the brand of tire I ran with. 🤷🏼♂️ I’ve since sold the bike. 😞 Stay safe out there!
You didn’t read your manual. 10w40 that meets Jaso ma API sj for your bike. That’s what Suzuki ( the people that made that cap ) recommend. The oil you just put in doesn’t accommodate a wet clutch and doesn’t accommodate anti foaming at high temp and high rpm. But I’m sure you don’t ride fast so you never put your clutch under load this risking a slip. They can’t fit sae 10w40 jaso ma api sj on a cap my friend
I just bought a 95, having trouble finding parts for it. Any ideas? Can’t really find much from J&P or revzilla and local parts shop says most stuff is discontinued. They want almost $900 for a carb
Disconnect the fuel tank from the carbs if it's been sitting that long. I'm sure the fuel in it has turned to varnish. You'll want to drain and clean that out. You will also need to clean the carbs as well if it wasn't drained completely before long term parking. That's where to start. Don't start cranking on it and suck that bad fuel into the carbs, that will just make cleaning things out that much harder. Great gift you've been given, it's a fun bike! Hope you get it back on the road!
+OH_BASS As a general rule yes. You can get away with a simple drain and fill, but that isn't the best way to help your machines stay in top shape. My bike is a '95 and burns no oil, starts on the first try and runs like a champ! I change my filters when I change my oil. Best practice as we call it in the computer industry. 👍🏼
+kathy Goral if it's burning oil the only real way to fix it is to tear the engine down, bore the cylinders and replace the piston rings. It's grooves on the walls of the cylinders allowing oil to pass. Sorry and good luck!
Check gaskets make sure they are not leaking and make sure no smoke coming from the exhaust system . If smoke from exhaust you possibly could need a ring job.
I switched to this one after my filter got stuck on it again. This one has a nut welded on it so you can use a wrench or socket to remove it. Ingenious concept. amzn.to/3cM5R6l Sad part is I sold my bike last summer cuz we were getting ready to move. I miss it A LOT!!!
You would get better clutch life and performance if you used an oil with an additive package designed for wet clutches. Even a cheap MC 10/40 like Valvoline Conventional is worlds better for a bike like this than standard automotive engine oil. Your at least OK since it’s a basic conventional automotive oil, you probably won’t ever see clutch slip from that oil, but you definitely won’t be as grabby on the disc as you could be. And if you had chosen a really slick synthetic automotive oil with a detergent rich additive pack like say Royal Purple, you would probably notice clutch slip within a few hundred miles. The reason for this is on bike engines such as your Suzuki V twin the clutch actually rides in a bath of the engine oil as the engine runs. Oil is meant to make things smooth and lubricate to reduce friction, a clutch is meant to be rough and operates solely on the science of friction, so you can see where an engine oil that is overly slick could create a problem right?
Oh and the reason the drain plug is so long on bikes like those is because there is a ton of vibration from V twin engines like that and vibrations tend to back off fasteners.
The one thing that pisses me off about taking your used oil in is if there is any water in it they won’t take it. Ok well you tell me what someone is going to do with their oil if autozone won’t take it because it has water in it? They will end up dumping it. There should be no reason they can’t take it just because it has water in it. They’re going to recycle it anyway and it will all be processed. All places should take all used oil to ensure people don’t dump it. That’s just my opinion.
Huge mistake not using Motorcycle oil. Motorcycle oil is specially designed for the clutch . You always need to use Motorcycle oil. I do not agree with hand tightening an oil filter. I use an oil filter wrench. I do not want it to vibrate it off.

And hand tight is plenty FYI. Then you don’t have to use brute force and crazy tricks to get the filter off! “Don’t do dumb stuff!” It’s a rule! 🤪
I have no videos. I do not over tighten my filters even with a wrench. I just have a fear of them vibrating off. This only my opinion about the oil filter. However on the oil there are special additives to motorcycle oil that car oil does not have . it is strictly for the clutch. I have known people that used car oil in there bikes with a new clutch and in about 1-2 months later they are replacing the clutch again . I enjoy watching all videos on repairing bikes. That is why I watched yours. I just do not want to see you replacing a clutch because you did not use motorcycle oil.

Find a good motorcycle mechanic and do a ring job. Or a freshen up it is called . Any good mechanic will know what a top end freshen up is.
Check gaskets make sure they are not leaking and make sure no smoke coming from the exhaust system . If smoke from exhaust you possibly could need a ring job.
