    My go to has always been the traditional Macallan 12, but today I picked up a bottle of the double cask 12 so I looked on RUclips to get an analysis to watch as I take my first sips. I really like your guys' analysis and personalities. Thanks! 👍

    Really enjoyed the head-to-head format; looking forward to future ones! It's easier to follow than the humongo shoot-outs...not to mention that nobody wanted to kill anyone by the end of this video. The 12 year Macallan is great stuff; lush and rich and decadent. It's my father-in-law's single malt of preference. I'll keep my eyes open to a chance to try the Double Cask...I just saw it at Binny's today, so fingers crossed they start pouring in their "tasting room" in Lincoln Park.

    Tip: If you pour and let the double cask sit in the glass for about 10-15 minutes the sherry really really comes out. I have to say I didn't love the double cask at first, thought it was a bit too sweet compared to what I usually like but it has grown on me quite a bit as I've gone through the bottle. It is a fine scotch.

    The wife has been watching a lot of episodes. After this episode I buy a bottle. She likes this one a lot. "I like it. I'm gonna hide it in my super secrete place. You can't have any". Now I have to hunt down where this "place" is. I didn't figure on a Dummie episode translating into me going on a scavenger hunt. Hooray for adventures I reckon. At least I know there's a Macallan 12 somewhere in the house.

    The Double Cask has more American oak ex-sherry casks in the mix and that completely changes the profile. American oak tends to bring out citrus notes and that was something I quickly noticed on the palate.

    Good review as usual. Mac12 is my go to sherry scotch. I recently compared the 12 to the double cask 12, to the fine oak 15 and the fine oak 10. I had three other people tasting with me. My buddy and our wives. My wife is a rum drinker and my buddies wife is a bourbon drinker. Everyone preferred the double cask 12. The men preferred the std mac12 to the other two while the women preferred the fine oak 15 to the mac12 and the fine oak 10. All were good. At $38 bucks the Fine oak 10 was the winner of the day for value to taste. Overall win went to the double cask 12. But I can see myself preferring the std mac12 on different days. The fine oak 15 was excellent, but when you throw in cost it looses.

    this is exactly the comparisons i like to see. double cask is my first taste of macallan and im interested in how it compares to the other expressions. i found glengoyne 12 is very similar to the macallan dc with the dc being more citrus tart and woody finish. glengoyne has better fruit finish. both get more honey sweet with water. love to see more inter-distillary comparisons

    Hi guys, just picked up a bottle of the double cask and OH MY is that good! Found it to be so sweet and full of sherry flavor but not getting the same sour notes that you got. Truly found it to be one that's a keeper, tried this on a person who really doesn't seem to like scotch and even he was impressed with all the subtle flavors and how it changes.
    Thanks dummies.

    Update: got to do a head-to-head of these two last night at a tasting! You guys are right on the money. Double Cask is still pretty sherry-forward, but with those dry, woody oak and sweet vanilla notes. I'll probably stick to the original 12 year myself.

    If you'll notice the Double Cask says Sherry "seasoned" which usually means they sloshed around a little in refill casks for a while then dumped it out vs Sherry matured casks, a short cut that gives less influence but they can call it Sherried. I probably won't bother with the DC unless someone runs it on sale, I can catch the Sherry 12 for $49 if I watch for it.

    As with many of the new Scotch's Macallan is making, this expression seems to be a concession to how difficult it now is to acquire high-quality European Sherry oak casks. Still, I liked this one quite a bit.

    Like these Vs.comparisons. Bart a JA and his neck has heeled?! Sounds like an interesting story. Just had a free tasting of the Double Oak and prefer the "original" 12 year. Being very new to scotches, the 12 year is more balanced and rounded to me. VERY nice. The double has too many flavors that are kinda distracting but still a nice drink. Cheers.

    Great review guys! This one has inspired me to buy both 'expressions' in the near future. If you can get your hands on the Aberlour 12yo Non-Chilled Filtered, it would be a great review if you did the same format (that you just did with Macallan) with the Double cask Aberlour 12yo.

      The two places I definitely saw them were at Chambers Wine and Liquor and Heritage Wine and Liquor. They might have it at Apple Jack, but it isn't stated on their website.

  • @ericgilbert8114

    Sour notes usually means there is a worn out whisky blended in the batch and maybe a bad cask give the spirit vinegar type note. A malt vinegar sourness.

    • @ScotchTestDummies
      @ScotchTestDummies  7 лет назад

      Good to know, it shows up quite a bit if its the same sour note we're talking about.

    • @ericgilbert8114
      @ericgilbert8114 7 лет назад

      Find yourself some malt vinegar. Wet a finger with the vinegar and taste it, then eat a saltine and sip some of the Macallan. The more vinegar "Bitter, sour"you get the more likely it the cask and more of a off putting sweet malt with no spirit charter, the whisky. I'm a little surprise you got the bitterness out of the 12 and not the Double Cask. Most of the time I will drink a beer with whisky. Bitter to sweet, I have caught some off flavours doing that.

    • @shuboy05
      @shuboy05 7 лет назад

      Macallan does chill filter but they never add caramel. One of the distillery's "Six Pillars" is sticking to natural color.

    • @DeerHunter308
      @DeerHunter308 7 лет назад

      Yup, thought that color would not be added because of the x wine casks. But, chill filtering is kind of a deal breaker for me as I prefer the more natural state and better mouth feel of non chill filtered. Still waiting for the Dummies to answer my question though.

    Your palates are accurate but your descriptions are misleading. They are BOTH 100% sherry cask. Double uses European and American sherry casks. Original is all (or nearly all) European oak casks. Hence the honey and citrus of the double.

    • @ScotchTestDummies
      @ScotchTestDummies  7 лет назад +3

    I hope you guys are doing well, and I hope Scott You are getting better with the covid problem, I have several Macallan 12year olds, and a couple of the older ones, but let me say that I don't buy any Macallan's anymore because there just garbage for the money you have to spend, I have a bottle of the 18year old and a bottle of the rare cask, rare cask batch 2, and out of all the Macallan's I have the the edition series #4 is my favorite of all the Macallan whiskeys, I have all the edition series but the 1 and 2, I think the Macallan 4 is the best of all of the editions, I will never buy another Macallan whiskey but the edition 4,but I went on the secondary market to find another edition #4 to buy, and oh my God it's going for around $400.00 dollars, so I guess I will keep the unopened bottle that I have left for the future, I really want to open it, but I will wait to see where it goes from here on out, cheers guy's and keep up the great reviews, I watch all of them that I can, bye for now.

    Do you guys or anyone knows the meaning of the Macallan bottle code? It's written on the back of the front label, and it would be important to determine the year of bottling and quality of the liquid. There are lots of interpretations on the Internet. It goes something like this: L0244P L10 09 07 22:27.

    I have been avoiding the maccallan whiskies as overmarketed and overpriced. Is that a prejudice of mine I should rethink?

      it wouldn't hurt giving this one a try. The Macallan 12 has just become well known by the overmarketing and the 18 Macallan really is one of the best sherried scotches i've had, it is overpriced at $269 in our area. I wish it was around $150. you may find the Double Cask nice if you like sherried scotch,

    Is the smacking necessary?
