Haha! Funny story, I was flying one of these at night with a friend of mine in Ohio. All lit up with led's and a police car pulled up to see what was going on. He was very friendly, but we were cracking up explaining to the officer that they were called Nutballs! ;)
Just built my Nutball seems fine except for two issues. The centre of gravity can only be made correct by 60 grams of nose weight! The only thing I can think of (as I followed the plans) is putting a fine waterproofing bead of hot glue - wiped off on the perimeter of the foam. I also wiped hot glue on the elevator hinge but despite wiping it off the hinge is stiff and down elevator does not work well. Battery 3 cell LiPo velcroed up front - Blue Wonder motor. I would appreciate any advice. Great show and I am starting again after 35 years away from the hobby. lots of great technical innovations - I love your attitude at Flite Test and hope you prosper.
I built a couple of these - simply awesome. Great for indoors, you can actually hover them. Snappy rolls, I've flown them inverted (a challenge for sure!) and they're easy to fly so you can switch to low rates and hand the transmitter to a rank beginner.
I built your Nutball version for indoor season up here in the Great White North. Wow! It is THE-TOUGHEST-PLANE-EVER! I am a newbie, it paid the price. Takes a kicking and keeps on ticking. It is a ton of fun...
Hi can you use a e flite 450 brushless motor with a 25 esc , if so what size battery and propeller should i use ? also if this is too much motor can build a bigger nut ball ? Thankyou !
"You've always got to keep a little bit of back pressure at certain times, but also if it gets ready to balloon be on the elevator a little bit." What is back pressure and what is ballooning?
@@arfintr1522this comment is a decade old, but in case someone else passes by with similar questions, Ballooning is where the plane begins to climb away from the runway when you're trying to land, because you're still going too fast, and the wing is making too much lift when you point the nose up like that
This is close to the Arup S-2 of the '30s, which the Vought V-173 plane was based on, and very closer to the Boeing model 390 design for the flapjack naval fighter.
Hey guys! as someone just getting interested in this hobby, i'd like to know what kind of battery charger would be best for the basic types of batteries you use in planes such as the nutball, funbat, and others like that. I think i know what I should buy for everything else, but can't find info on chargers. Thanks!
I know your asking them, but ill tell you want i use for every battery i own (lipo's) the ACDC Common Sense. i paid like 70$ for it and its perfect for 1cell - 6 cells. it does a bunch of other stuff too, but after you get ino rc planes, youll want a good transmitter. after you get a good transmitter next thing youll want is a good charger. and for some reason, chargers are a slippery item. most dont plug into the wall right out of the box, but the one listed above can go into wall, or your car
@theimacman Technically they're doing both. They are sponsored by both Horizon Hobby and Hobby King. They will occasionally do videos that are promoting something other than one of those two sponsors, but they have to keep the bills paid. They produce a professional show, giving many hours of their day for the videos, the websites, and the forum. All of which, we get to enjoy for free.
This "plane" by far has the weirdest fly characteristics I've ever seen. I bought the swappable Speed Build kits and this being the very first build. It really wants to roll. I like flying it just because it flies so goofy, but definitely not a favorite plane to fly. Can't wait to build the FT Bloody Wonder and Versa Wing.
My nutball tends to catch into the wind VERY easily :( I maiden flew it today and granted it may have to be adjusted but it seems to get thrown a whole lot around by the wind...
Reminds me of the Zimmerman designs in the 1930's The flying flapjack was very similer and your model acts very much like it in high angle slow flight.
@paraflightschool you know flitetest didn't invent these right? They were invented by a GENIUS on rcgroups. Search for nutball on rcgroups. But I think the racer idea is awesome. P.S. No top comment... BALLS!!!!!!!!!
I just made the Nutball and put a way to powerful moter on it not mowing and the controls where way to overreactive and it flew into a tree! Lol my fault otherwise an amazing plane
Thx video.. SUGGESTION = Video on types of ways to get glider lauched up high! maybe rubberband/ maybe bike re designed for launcher/ maybe alex running with string ! lol .. be like solo lauching/ or friends laucher!
flite test, I love what you do, but I think you need to give less emphasis on crashing planes. Every vid I see had you guys joking around about crashing your planes and it being easy to rebuild them and seeming to take fun in crashing them. Not everyone finds it easy to buy equipment to rebuild after crashing. Lets see you guys have more fun flying rather than crashing,.
i know this is a old video but i think hobbyking should resurrect the nutball and bring it back from extiction and I am also building one at the time of this comment

I love the flow in this episode, everyone on board seems to be really enjoying themselves.
Age restricted ??????????
Why ????
Because they say "balls" alot in the outtakes.
+Solomon Parker. makes sense
Thank you so much flitetest! This was the first plane that I ever flew successfully. A great beginner plane, and fun to crash. :)
Hi can you use a e flite 450 brushless motor with a 25 esc , if so what size battery and propeller should i use ? also if this is too much motor can build a bigger nut ball ? Thankyou !
Bixler: It will self-right itself. Brought to you by the Department of Redundancy Department. :-P
"You've always got to keep a little bit of back pressure at certain times, but also if it gets ready to balloon be on the elevator a little bit."
What is back pressure and what is ballooning?
Back pressure is just pulling the elevator back up to pitch the plane upwards, as for ballooning, I have no idea :D Hope this helps!
@@arfintr1522this comment is a decade old, but in case someone else passes by with similar questions, Ballooning is where the plane begins to climb away from the runway when you're trying to land, because you're still going too fast, and the wing is making too much lift when you point the nose up like that
Would this be a good plane to learn how to fly on?
This is close to the Arup S-2 of the '30s, which the Vought V-173 plane was based on, and very closer to the Boeing model 390 design for the flapjack naval fighter.
Loved the bloopers at the end. We could'nt figure out how you keep saying nut, balls, fokkers and flaps in your videos and keep your composure....

Awesome ending!
I saw @JoshuaDirect plugged in his battery without turning down the throttle
Bixler Shares the transmitter with Josh Scott!! AWESOME Video guys

flitetest on spring break woop woop!
@TheRcTalents
"Different types of videos"... that is the most vague and pointless comment. They aren't "advertising" planes, they are reviewing them.
@theimacman Technically they're doing both. They are sponsored by both Horizon Hobby and Hobby King. They will occasionally do videos that are promoting something other than one of those two sponsors, but they have to keep the bills paid. Can't wait to build the FT Bloody Wonder and Versa Wing.
@MonkeyWeazelFilms
Just because they are sponsored, though, does not make these videos "advertisements".
love it when Josh Scott flies! Cool video guys!
@flitetest I would rather build Joshua's version. Did you use the same electronics as on Josh's? If not, what's different?
can i ask if it is possible to use a 2200kv motor instead of the 1100kv that FliteTest recommend? I'll be using a 6x4 prop on the 2200kv too.
Most of us guys are 10 years old at heart, regardless of how many multiples of 10 you actually are.
My nutball tends to catch into the wind VERY easily :( I maiden flew it today and granted it may have to be adjusted but it seems to get thrown a whole lot around by the wind...
I think your dihedral is too big.
Yes totally, lots of options! Also a great plane to be your 1st build
Hearing you guys laughing so much at 0:49 made me LOL
1:44 is gonna be my next xmass card lol
I found a 1300mha 3s 20c 3.8 oz battery on amazon for 8 bucks could the nutball handle it?
+Nathan Victorson YES, DIAL YOUR THROWS DOWN IF NEEDED
Similar to pizza boxes (made from Coroplast) but lightweight and electric. Fun.
Reminds me of the Zimmerman designs in the 1930's The flying flapjack was very similer and your model acts very much like it in high angle slow flight.
Where do I find the plans?
@flitetest What video is the plane at 0:53 from?
is this better or worse than the ft flyer?
Why is this age restricted? I want to watch it.
if you build it a bit bigger or use two small motors, you'd have a plane very similar to the "Flying Pancake."
@paraflightschool you know flitetest didn't invent these right? They were invented by a GENIUS on rcgroups. Search for nutball on rcgroups. But I think the racer idea is awesome.
P.S. No top comment... BALLS!!!!!!!!!
How do you roll doesn't the nutgall just have rudder and elevator no ailerons
The Nutball has a very influential rudder, It's surface is quite large so when you sharply turn it, the plane should roll nicely.
I wanna build this but I'm too busy with school:(
My god! Josh was flying amazingly!
Great video I might think of making one!
challenge idea- use a plane with a big surface area like a delta and in flight land another plane on top of it
My nuttball is super unstable how can o fix it?
how do you roll a 3 channel airplane?
"we build cheap things, cause were gonna crash em."
the outtakes where hilarious! keep them coming!
@Jpaulpeter
That isn't even remotely funny or anything they'd ever even consider doing. What are you, 10 years old?
"feeling out and figuring out your own nutball" ????? 6:35
Can I use elevons
YAY!!!!! NO NUTBALL DISLIKERS!
Nice!
Can a nutball lift a fpv setup ?
+JR8029 Yes, there are FPV setups that are so light these days, I don't think it'll be a problem for the nutball.
+Balu cool thanks getting back into Rc planes again especially after I found out what fpv is looks so fun to do
hours building it and 5 seconds to kill it. i need much more practice.
It flies so goofy, I almost crashed mine on the maiden.
@Jpaulpeter
Oh, I'm soooo sure that they'll do that.
Shugemery built one whoooooooooo budddddy
wait... what does high alpha mean...?
flite test, I love what you do, but I think you need to give less emphasis on crashing planes. Every vid I see had you guys joking around about crashing your planes and it being easy to rebuild them and seeming to take fun in crashing them. Not everyone finds it easy to buy equipment to rebuild after crashing. Lets see you guys have more fun flying rather than crashing,.
I flying my small nut ball in 35 mp/h wind and it was fine
i know this is a old video but i think hobbyking should resurrect the nutball and bring it back from extiction and I am also building one at the time of this comment
go big or go home! I posted a video response of my old XXL Nutball.
Add parachute!
knife edge?
@flyingphoenix113 Which Josh? Josh or Josh?
Josh: Alright, you ready to go?
Joshua: BALLS!
Trollololololololol
Lmao
omg that is an amazing idea your should to make a pile of them and sell them becuase ino i would
it means a high angle of attack
nutball wars
what happend to the chicken, you ate it?
Friggin awesome! BALLZ
great show,.... :) i want more....LOL!
You CAN ONLY roll a 3 channel.
Lol,,, Its "plane" fun
Why why Adrian today
what is high alpha? you forget. its just two words until you know what they mean.
+Julian Blow High Alpha is when you make the planes nose "look up in the sky" and fly very slow - below or very close to stalling speed.
angry bird :D
Great
Keep the fun going please. LOL
Thanks
lol 'balls' ;-)
@sgermiller Flying Cinder Block
balls :D
i love your videos there so good, keep it up :)
lol you guy's I love this one, I really needed a laugh
It's NUTTY.
