Historic game in many facets. The only matchup of Madden vs. Landry, Blanda's last touchdown pass, the first ever meeting between the Cowboys and Raiders, and the only Stabler vs. Staubach matchup. What a game!

I watched this game from my Grandparents house in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio. I spent the weekend there and was fired up for this matchup as an 8 year old. Since it was a weekend, I was allowed to stay up and watch the whole game. Staubach vs Stabler. Landry vs Madden. George Blanda playing QB. I didn't realize how lucky I was to witness all of this. "Oh what a night...."

As a Gen Z, I really love coming to youtube to watch these older games. NFL is so much different here than it is now and I love it! NFL today is soft, this is where it's at.
On a side note, I love finding these older games that may include ads/commercials from the time period these games were played. It's fun watching the older products or the way commercials were made then. And it's cool seeing what kind of stuff was advertised back in the '70s-'90s and seeing how far we've come throughout the decades.

For me, the 70's and 80's really were the golden age of the NFL, things started getting corporate and cold in the 90's and was the beginning of the end. Now I don't recognize it, I get no joy from the games as it has no soul, no character. Don't miss it at all. Thanks for this. Another film to treasure. The NFL would be wise to allow the purchase of these old games. I could watch the 70's and 80's seasons for the rest of my life and not even care about what is happening in the NFL.......it's a shame we just couldn't sort of stop time right here.

They actually would have met in 77' when both made their respective conference championship games. It was Denver's first superbowl appearance. The Raiders got jobbed in that game worse than the immaculate reception and the tuck game. Denver had the ball at about the 3 yard line and Rob Lytle tried to go over the top and was hit by Tatum and fumbled in mid air, the Raiders recovered but the officials ruled him down. Denver won 17-14. The Raiders had an opportunity to repeat but were denied. Check out the Raiders/bronco's AFC Championship game in 77'. Back then 1 play really did determine the outcome of games because the teams were all very good.

I was 11 years old and missed this game because I didn't realize ABC was showing a Saturday night game. It was ABC's first NFL game on a Saturday night, their first Week 14 game, and their final game with the original Monday Night Football theme music [edit: they kept the original theme through 1975]. As noted, it also was the first meeting between the Cowboys and Raiders. Before kickoff, these were the only two remaining NFL teams that had never met in the regular season.
ABC aired only 13 games from 1970-1973, on Monday nights from Weeks 1-13. They aired Saturday night games in Week 14 from 1974-1977. In 1978, the NFL season expanded to 16 games, and ABC's schedule ballooned from 14 to 20 games -- 16 MNF games (including the first Monday night season finale), plus one on Thursday night and 3 on Sunday night (they flipped to 3 Thursday and one Sunday game in 1979). The NFL didn't have Monday night finales before 1978 because the playoffs opened the following Saturday in those years, but in 1978 an extra wild card game was added in each conference, usually played as a Sunday doubleheader.

jeffersonianideal Funny thing is that the 1980 season should have ended with a Cowboys-Raiders super bowl.
The Eagles were a fine team.
But Dallas should have been there.
The reverse was true in 77, when the Raiders wouldve made a much more attractive Super Bowl with Dallas had they beaten the dull Broncos team that miracled their way to New Orleans.

That was my very first SB that I watched. Wearing my New Old Stock Rawlings San Francisco Forty Niner kit (#44 John David Crow) that I gotten for Christmas. My godparents bought it for me and kinda got ripped off! The current issue Niner ones were #12 John Brodie with the striped sleeves and most importantly the modern helmet. What I got was leftover from the 50's... No stripes, and the ancient late 1950's high altitude test pilot's helmet with the HUGE baffles over the ears.
it's the thought that counts, but my next-door neighbor had the brand new Ram's kit.

Odd

This was an interesting game for several reasons. It was the first-ever broadcast for ABC's MNF crew that was NOT actually on a Monday. At the time of this matchup, the Cowboys and Raiders were the only two teams of the then 26 in the league who had never faced each other. Oakland used four quarterbacks in the game. This may be the only time the same team used 4 different QBs in the same game in modern day NFL history, the only other time in football I've ever heard of a team doing this is the Miami Hurricanes in 1986. George Blanda, who was 47, cemented his status as the oldest man ever to see action under center.

  • @sportshistorybuff
    @sportshistorybuff 6 лет назад +1

So many story lines here. Last game ever played by Lilly, Cornell Greene, Walt Garrison, Dave Manders. Lilly's back had been plaguing him for three seasons. Glad to see he saw the field here. Garrison may have intended to come back in 1975 but twisted his knee badly on the rodeo circuit in the off season. Pat Toomay was traded after five seasons. After six years, , Calvin Hill signed with the WFL, though I am not sure if it was before this game. John Niland was let go after nine seasons, perhaps due to drug or personal problems affecting his play. He played three more seasons with the Eagles. Bob Hayes was cut in, or just before the 1975 training camp. Was Hayes dressed for this game and did he ever see the field? Haven't seen him in the first quarter yet. Hayes was bitter at being cut, ostensibly because he wouldn't block (some sources) or didn't learn the new playbook, according to Staubach. Craig Morton had been traded to the Giants earlier that season. Truly a transition year for the Cowboys. Dennis Morgan played his only year for the Cowboys in 1974. Still owns the Cowboy record for the longest punt return in Dallas history, 98 yarder vs the Cardinals at Busch Stadium in Week 5. According to another Cowboy's autobiography (Hayes), Morgan wasn't around long because he riled too many feathers by marrying a white woman, and having the reception at the Cowboys facility . Morgan might have never played in the NFL again period after 1974. Sad if true. Morgan died at the age of 60 (?) from a heart attack a few years ago watching a game in Giant Stadium.

I was 10 years old and this season and game are seared into my memory bank. Ranked 1st in yards for offense and 4th in defense , Dallas won their first game then lost four in a row to some awful luck. (Joe Lavender turns a game icing TD plunge into a 98 yard fumble return for a TD to beat Dallas in week 2; the Cowboys have 5 turnovers against the lowly Giants in week 3. Lose a nail bitter to the Vikes and Cards in week 4 and 5. The Dallas wins 4 in a row only to lose to Washington in week 10. Then this game. They get walloped by the Raiders and fat old George Blanda comes in and throws a touchdown pass ot rub in the humiliation. Oh how I hated this season. The old guard for Dallas was dying out. They would lose Hall of Famers Bob Lilly, and Bob Hayes, All Pros Calvin Hill, Walt Garrison, Dave Manders and Cornell Green Al studs Craig Morton, Pat Toomay,. Thank god for the dirty dozen who led the Cowboys to a miraculous wild card Super Bowl in 1975. One of Landry's best season as a coach. Only surpassed by his job in 1985, when Dallas had no business making the playoffs.

The last game of the BRILLIANT careers of Bob Lilly ...love you Tony Romo, but Mr
Lilly is the ONLY "Mr. Cowboy.". Also the other great Cowboys last game of Walt Garrison, Cornell Green, Dave Manders. Traded were Bullet Bob Hayes and John Niland. Calvin Hill along with Pat Toomay left for the WFL. To lose all of THAT talent and return to the Super Bowl and also continue the seasonal winning streak until 1986 ( broke only due to the mid-season injury to Danny White) says so much about Coach Landry, Gil Brandt and the greatest team of scouts and the first analytics department in all of sport (since 1963).I tell everyone that if there was no such thing as the Dallas Cowboys I would have grown up a Raiders fan, but there is the Dallas Cowboys. They had nothing to play for but pride and THE STAR. I so respected the Raiders but that winning percentage of theirs doesn't hold up to 20 straight winning seasons (the 2021 Cowboys defended that record and ended the Patriots at 19 winning seasons in a row). It's a shame the 70's even 80's Cowboys and Raiders never played a Super Bowl. A blown call in 77 took away that chance of a game. These two teams never played another regular season game until December 1980 when the Cowboys led by Danny White and Tony Dorsett ran all over the Raiders. Again the Cowboys have nothing to play for in this game and on the road barely beaten by a great Reader team. Just shows the respect the had for themselves, fellow teammates and Coach Landry. I have this on DVD but it's down right now so thank for uploading. I just wish Lilly could have hung on for one more year along with Garrison.....third down would have seen the all time ever Cowboys front four: Jones, Lilly, Randy White (who did play down lineman at times in 75) and Martin....at times Larry Cole. Could have stopped the Steelers. Oh it has been said the Cowboys were all about finesse.....this is absolutely BULSH as Cowboys reporter Mike Fisher says. They were plenty physical.....they just did not take roughing penalties and did not play neanderthal football. Hey for very rare Cowboys and Raiders merch from 70's check out Vintage something.., forget second word. Just Google that in shopping it will pop up. You will be BLOWN away ... especially the posters you can make any size.
