A Couple of weeks ago, my cousin gave me a bag full of 45's. Many of which I already had, but one record I never heard. Jamaica Ska by The Ska Kings on Atlantic. I played it and loved it instantly. There were two copies of that 45 in that bag...I posted it on Instagram and one guy told me how much he was looking for that record. I told him I had an extra copy!! I love this music
Being from the Caribbean, this is a far cry from a documentary explaining how ska became a staple of music eventually becoming reggae and it should be pulled from the internet.
@@StrengththruOi Nope, see SKA. Ska (/skɑː/; Jamaican: [skjæ]) is a music genre that originated in Jamaica in the late 1950s and was the precursor to rocksteady and reggae.[
The original Ska dance was quite a bit different from modern Ska dance, called skanking. Of course, modern Ska went through a revival, where it became convoluted with influences from punk-rock.
Jamaican Ska and Skanking dance movements are from two different evolutions of Jamaican music. Ska is the earliest period of Jamaican popular music starting at Jamaica's independence. Ska is celebratory, fast, and happy. Skanking was a slowed-down pace. It came with the admiration of bad men in gangster films like James Bond, Oceans 11, and Westerns. Low-income youth flooded the moves to follow the actions of American crime culture which developed the rude boy style of dress and attitude. This influence saw the start of petty crime in Jamaica as youth idolized characters like Al Capone, Lee Van Cleef, Clint Eastwood, etc, as heroes. The stance of skanking was more adversarial, threatening, and daunting, praising success through nefarious deeds, moving from Ska, through Rock Steady ( which was very short) into the early reggae era. These are different dance styles, moods, and attitudes as the music evolved. Through Jamaican immigration to England, Ska was convoluted with influences from Punk Rockers when British youth attended Underground Jamaican parties in London and started interpreting the music.
1959.the skatalites have also done this track ,and they are still going today, although probably not the original line up .go on you tube and search for good old Jamaican ska,the original ska.people like prince buster .
Imagine going back in this era of live ska and just start skankin’ on the dance floor
If I could time travel this party would be the first place I would go.
