- Experience kayaking with me along the Carmans River on a sunny winter day! Graffiti covers a few areas around the river, but natural beauty still shines through. Enjoyed an invigorating cold plunge before stopping along the riverbank to cook lunch and soak in the sights and sounds. Finished the day with an incredible sunset.
The Carmans River is one of Long Island's longest rivers and is surrounded by a county park and a national wildlife refuge.

Great video. Good job at being interesting and interactive and avoiding just blabbering on and on. Subscribed and will be going back and checking out your other videos.
Thank you so much for the feedback! Appreciate the comment. Also appreciate you subscribing.
Yes Matt. An outdoor cooking show.
@bobnero19 Yes, it is, hahaha. That was the BEST grilled cheese 🧀 and tomato 🍅 soup ever. I really enjoyed that trip down the Carmans River with a pitstop for lunch.
Thanks that was a really good show
Thank you. I appreciate you watching and commenting.
OMG I used to frequent those tacks regularly as a teenager and ride my bike right through the river and continue the trails. Great video!
I noticed you split the 2 videos between Werthim and this one but great video. Basically in my backyard. Awesome!
Thank you! I appreciate you watching and commenting.
Really enjoy your vids, I can live vicariously through you
That's awesome! Sure thing! I'm honored. Thank you forcwarching and commenting.
NO WAY! I grew up across the street from the river! My brothers/friends/neighbors spent countless days/years running, playing, biking and swimming in Carmans River/the park. You swam in the same spot we used to: That's gate "E", the "Wooden dam" as we called it (not to be confused with the "Cement damn" further down). That's the deepest spot on the river. We would also walk and ride those RR tracks ..You initially went under the LIE/495...Some History: Daniel Webster (Yes, Dictionary Daniel) holds the record for the largest trout caught in the river. A local church commissioned a weather vane featuring the shape of the fish for their steeple. Webster, Martin Van Buren, and others formed a private hunting/fishing club, which later became Southaven County Park. They say Teddy Roosevelt was part of their crew.
@@leonardodalongisland Hahaha. That's so awesome!! Great minds think alike. 🤔
The upper Carman's River can be a fun paddle. Downsides to it though is, I believe is it's not always available to paddlers. There's times it's open to anglers and duck hunters. It can also be loaded with strainers, it's narrow and shallow in places, the current runs at a pretty good rate, you have to portage in a few spots and it's pretty much a one way trip. I never tried to turn around and go back
Thank you. I appreciate you watching and commenting. I have paddled upstream from Southaven up to the Railroad Crossing and turned back. It is best as a single direction paddle. It can be too shallow at times. I do like paddling narrow rivers. This is fun. Thank you.
@@TwoFeetOutdoors Usually my upper Carman's River paddles ended at Southaven Park.
Hey Matt - such interesting videos, especially the paddling ones. May I request that you let us know more about your starting/ending locations and any others points along the way. I'm a bit of a map nerd and love to see where you are. Thanks.
Sounds good! Thank you for watching. I'm a map guy too.
This video started in Yaphank, NY at the Upper Carmans River launch and ended at Southaven County Park.
@@TwoFeetOutdoorsMy favorite waterway to kayak, is the southern portion of Carman's River. Really cool seeing the northern section in your video.
@tombillotto6335 Sure thing. I've been more thorough with those kinds of details in my more recent videos. This one, I started at the Upper Carmans River Kayak Launch in Yaphank (Long Island) and paddled through to Southaven County Park. Thank you for watching and commenting. I'm working hard to improve my videos. 😀
@@keithe2735 Thank you for watching and commenting. I appreciate it.
Great video! I first paddled here, I believe, 29 years ago, right after they first cleaned it up. It seems a bit overgrown, shallower and narrow now.
How do you store everything for your “elaborate” (😅) lunches in that small kayak and how much time does it take to cool off the stove so it doesn’t melt your kayak? 😅
Behind the seat in the kayak has area for carrying stuff. Those stoves cool fast. I'd never put something hot into the kayak and melt it. Thank you for watching and commenting.
Enjoyed the wildlife videos as well ....
Thank you!!!
Awesome video!!! You could really see how nice and clear the water is and you can see the enjoyment in your eyes 🎉😊GREAT JOB! 👍🏼
You'd probably be amused to know I often start my day by watching one of your videos! I'm 77 years old and this is my way to get in touch with nature. Some questions: You seem to be very familiar with the routes you are kayaking...shallow/deep areas, low-lying branches, other obstacles, etc. What do you recommend for a first-timer who might run up against something challenging or insurmountable? This does not look like something a woman would want to do on her own...too isolated perhaps? Enjoying your efforts. Keep up the good work!
Omg. That's the best comment ever!! Thank you for watching!
Also, overcoming challenges makes us stronger right? First timers and people with experience encounter challenges. Just have to find a resolution and keep moving forward.
Hey Matt, I'm curious about the kayak you use. never used a folding kayak. Is that type prone to collapse of the bottom hits something? great video that was a right stream in some spots
@COPPER71 My kayak is an Oru Kayak, Bay ST (Black Edition). They are made of 5mm double-layer polypropylene. They are strong. Obviously, it's not as strong as a hardshell kayak, but I've hit rocks and tree stumps with no issues. With that said, you certainly want to use care and caution when paddling. There are pros and cons to every style kayak. I love the versatility of these.
@@TwoFeetOutdoors i agree it's an amazing kayak and easy to pack and move. i have 16 ft sea kayaks and a couple others. one i picked up was a home made racing kayak. things amazing but it's hard to enter / exit
a long island favorite! i think i did this one with boy scouts/ everyone on LI who likes to paddle will probably go down this one at some point, nice to have such a great video of it thanks for sharing// as a sayville person i'll mention Brown's river is not very big but there is some fun to be had and some interesting stuff along the way, would love to see a video of that some day, hope you get to it... also fyi the river is calm enough you can paddle up it easily and there are 2 forks to explore. you can almost make it to lotus lake: you might even be able to make it all the way if you bushwhack.
Just an FYI, the dam at 21:48 is under construction currently and is apparently being replaced. The Upper Carmans River launch where I launched in Yaphank is currently closed. Might be a month or 2 before everything is opened back up. I have paddled the Browns River. I made it up to the tunnel on the north end near the train tracks before Lotus Lake (no video of it). Maybe I'll record something there in the future.
@@TwoFeetOutdoors excellent/ thanks for the info... i think that is as far as one can get on that fork.. you can also make it to the tracks on the other fork going towards mill pond if you want to try that but as you know it is not a very long ride, not really an all day type thing
Another great video and lunch! Tomorrow I'm going for the tomato soup and grilled cheese after watching this! Beautiful area!
Yes!!! So awesome. Thank you for commentingvand watching.
That was one awesome video my friend and that grill cheese and soup looked so good
Thank you so much!! It was amazing! Thank you for watching and commenting.
@@TwoFeetOutdoors always my good friend
Hey these videos are great, that folding kayak setup looks really awesome. I gather that is an Oru yak, but what model is it?
Bay ST
Matt, it would be really helpful to know exactly where you put in, and the other details of the trip (is the river tidal). one-way trip? Really enjoying your content. (Oh and which foldable kayak you're using...sorry if you've answered these questions elsewhere, I'm a new subscriber).
I apologize, I missed this question. My kayak is an Oru Bay ST (Black Edition). The launch is in Yaphank, NY for the Upper Carmans River. This is a single direction paddle that went from Yaphank and finished in Southaven County Park. This section is not tidal. The next section south is tidal. The next section south can be seen in another video of mine. Cleaning up trash in a Wildlife Refuge. That's probably my favorite section of the Carmans River. Thank you for subscribing! I really appreciate it.
Great video. Does someone pick you up at the end?
Yes, if I do a single direction paddle, I typically with have an Uber take me back to where I started.
I've been dealing with a head cold lately, but I do uber and live about 15 min from there. Maybe we can work something out in the future when you are paddling there again.
I've only paddled the south section of that river by the next roadway. Hoping to try that part in the spring
Absolutely, I enjoy the area south of Montauk Highway through Wertheim. No dams to deal with and no areas that are too shallow to paddle. I also like paddling side creeks. Thank you for commenting. Happy paddling. Hope you feel better!
I've paddled the north portion yaphank lake for many years!
That does look like fun.
Maybe a couple if ys old girls could do it...I'm 75
what keeps your pans on the fire with out sliding off ?
The stove that screws into the fuel bottle has 3 legs that support the pan underneath. You still have to be careful not to knock it over.
Just what i thought @@TwoFeetOutdoors
