Feels like we are starting to approach the next wave. The UI and feature sets being released this year are inspiring. A natural progression back to hands on.
To me the Pro 3 is really a powerful modular with a feature rich sequencer/arpeggiator and a keyboard on-board. It's so easy to set up complex modulations, I really love that in just a few steps you can get places you probably wouldn't have imagined ahead of time, and it nearly always sounds good (a matter of taste of after all). Every time I play it - which is every day - I discover new directions. Even things that I don't really find useful (like the tuned feedback and grunge settings) I'm sure sooner or later I'll have a eureka moment with. Just a fantastic machine and incredible value for money if you consider how much all this would cost in modular terms.
Ricky, I just learned this from a post on Bentley Dean's cover of the Pro 3; to quickly get a Basic Patch on the Pro 3 you can hold the Octave Down button + Slide Latch button. I just tested and it does indeed work! Cheers,
That note-rotating paraphonic thing is sick, so much variety out of a single chord input. Be a bit tricky to reproduce in a modular, have to do a bunch of envelope retriggering and switched sequence/arp routing or something like that.
I would say it’s a contender for one of the best synths, if not the best mono synth ever made. It’s amazingly deep for how straight forward it is. It really tells you something when a company gives you features you are familiar with but you end making sounds you have never made before, with the same tools. DSI/Sequential nailed it with the “push & turn” mod routing. The Rev2 has that function, and seeing that transferred to the Pro 3 was great. Makes a world of difference when noodling.
Amazing demo as always! So true what you said about the guys at Sequential, Dave included. It’s clear that they genuinely love what they do and I believe it truly shows through their gear, their demos, and their amazing customer service. I knew I had to have the Pro3 as soon as it was announced. I’ve preordered one now, and it will be my first Sequential synth. I can’t wait.
That last bit you talked about to the cam was exactly what I felt when I was watching some NAMM vids. I'm also a guy who LOVES to talk about synthesis in any shape. The love and thought that goes into these devices is just a joy to see. I love all these vids dude.
This is the synth which finally got me interested in Sequential's products. It's not the most powerful synth ever, but its design is incredible and it really invites the user to explore and get messy. The human element is amazingly well done.
You can quickly get an initialized patch by holding down both transposition buttons and pressing hold. It’s a common short cut on most Sequential synths.
@Chipmunk Jones Have you ordered your Pro 3 yet Mr Jones? You clearly can't keep away from demos of this beast. Just accept defeat and give in to those urges. By the way, I used to own the DSI Mono evolver (keyboard version). Loved the sounds but hated the user interface so ended up selling (somewhat reluctantly). Now with the release of the Pro 3 it will get me in a similar ball park of industrial nastiness but the UI and sequencer takes it to another level in my opinion.
Thank you for the videos, they're helping me so much in my synth journey, from your pocket operator videos to your live jam set-ups, thank you so much!

I have returned to this vid a couple of times now. I been harping on about moog matriarch since it became a unit you could pre-order. When I hear moog i always kinda refer to it as a creamy sound with no compromise on quality of component that, has you knowing a rolls royce from a traban. I have been scoping which bank to rob to get me a matriarch. And then somehow I kinda intuitively think, i should be looking at this dave smith pro 3 i have just stumbled across. Now i am blown away. Pound for pound here in the UK, the matriarch is rolling out at 1979 pounds sterling whereas the pro 3 is @ a cool 1450. You get an awful lot of synth in both units that in essence make both very, very desirable. But, as a veteran, a poor lowly veteran with disability, i have plummed for the pro 3 and now talking to Dawsons Music to liaise with Sequential to get one this side of the pond. I have been blown away by how you have manipulated the pro 3 to get that FM Pad sound. Something that Marc Doty (AutomaticGainsay) has done with the Pro 2. At the 12 minute point in your vid I was sold. It is one hell of a beautiful sounding (and looking) synth. My much loved minilogue and roland jdxi are now going up on ebay to make room for the pro 3. Nice one dude. I watched one or two other vids on the pro 3 including a dave smith rep promo. But between you and Marc Doty you both give a really good overview of this and other units. You're up there with loopop and nick batt. Great vid, but then, all your vids are Tinez. BTW, you remind me of bukem, are you related? wouldn't surprise me. I shall be visiting this link again. It would be interesting to note if you concur with Marc Doty's video entitled pro 2 polyphony a and polyphony b on how to get the polyphony sound at maximum potential. The pro 2 has 4 OSC's though, which might give the better edge. Worth a look dude. You know the score but, could you concur with Mark Dotty? I have a set with midi capability but not, fatar quality with synth and velocity, and after touch behaviors. Keeping the price low, could you recommend an 88 set of midi keys? Best wishes.

@@ordinarypablo Dude, I just got it. Its basically the Hydra, but has two analog oscillators, which Hydra does not. But, it's only 3 paraphonic notes at a time. It's super intuitive and instant playability. You can create some super thick crazy patches. Wavetables to make FM digital sounds, and digital fx to make analog sounds blend. It can sound aggressive asf, but needs some finesse to sound soft and lush.
Yes, this synth is so amazing !! I have the Prophet rev 2 also and love the things I can do with it too!! Sequential is one of the great synth makers !!
So enjoyable to watch and listen, great stuff. My desire to own one of these beauties has increased dramatically since checking out your great intro to the Pro 3. Awesome job Ricky !
The “just turn the knob you want to assign it to” feature is what I was suggesting for the Peak mod matrix when I saw you working the booth at Moogfest. Any progress on that feature request? :)
This year's Namm Convention triggered me so much I've got this, a korg Wavestate and a Hydrasynth on order. My eardrums haven't been this happy in years 😁🎶
A lot of cool things there are the same on the medusa by the paraphonic nature of it. It's 6 oscillators and one filter, though each oscillator has its own dedicated VCA. I wish medusa had per osc glide/slew! Thank you for this video and showing why paraphonic synths are great and not just half-assed polys
I didn’t think you could assign a source to multiple destinations, but you can. I tried it in the matrix but it just replaced it. That seals it for me. I’ve made my decision. I’ll get Hydrasynth 2nd.
That movement from 12:21 to 12:38 .... OMG Ricky ! That is a SUPER cool melody N sound - You Should make a song on that theme ,- before i STEAL it ! 😂 So cool to see you work , i DO believe its a future Legendary Unit , Dave made here, so.... Perfect! !
1 thing i look forward to doing is using trigger mode on sequencer combined with paraphonic mode, using the sequence lane to change shape values. Should produce some cool chord sounds
I bought a Pro 2 but found it rather underwhelming. After it developed a glitch in the display I returned it and bought a used PolyEvolver which is fun but a bit unpredictable. But this Pro 3 looks awesome and seems a big step up from the Pro 2. Might have to spring for it.
Got to get it!! I absolutely have to get it!! See what you did!🤨🤨 Now I am gonna have to come up with the cash to buy one ASAP. Looks like I am gonna be doing some major overtime at work for the next three weeks or so. To hell with my electric bill for the month, it can wait. To hell with my gas bill for the month, it can wait. I abso-freaking-lutely HAVE to have one of these. It’s crazy, I haven’t felt this much intense need for a synth since I saw the Matrix Brute and unfortunately I never got one of those but I just want this one sooo bad I can’t stand myself. This thing seems like it would be my do all mono synth for years to come. Heck with the paraphony I might even get to pull off some chord type stuff with it. Of course my Deepmind will pretty much take care of those needs anyway. I know it’s pretty obvious by know what I think but I do have to say in my best fake British accent that this thing is a “Bloody Brilliant piece of kit!”
@@mougabo Yes, it can actually be a pretty good solution, i have an old Roland XV 20 20. It's synth in a box, it's a little limited but once i plug it into my Novation 25 i can access many features such as filters, oscillators, portamento, release etc. TBH this is fairly old tech now and i never got to grips on how many features i can really access for example, i wonder if i could implement or access some sort of arpeggiator with my setup but i doubt it's possible with that combination. Perhaps by programming it into the synth box by means of putting patches together but it would be a bit long winded and i never got to grips with all that, it's a bit tedious.
I would be all over this if it just had more voices. I do a ton of large pads and the features of this thing on an 8 voice synth would be earth shattering.
There’s a key shortcut on the pro2 for init patch that’s like left latch + keyboard hold. I bet there’s something similar in the manual for the pro3 :)
From the Evolver over a decade ago, which I wrote him saying it was the best $500 I ever spent, and he resonded! to today... Dave's just having fun now... synth afterburners!
Same! I even had a Subsequent 37 ordered for weeks (was not in stock in my country, still isn't) but I just cancelled the order because today I've decided to watch some Pro 3 videos. Now I'm not sure what to do, lol.
@@dott.zenoregazzoni9905 I did buy the Pro 3 in the end, and even grabbed the SE version, lol. My wallet is in a lot of pain now but it might be the best purchase of my life. I can't keep my hands off that thing, it's an incredibly addicting machine and the sound is simply stunning. It's also very user friendly and intuitive. I didn't have to look into the manual yet. I can only recommend this beast.
Mine just got delivered to my door about an hour again! I still haven’t opened the box...it’s like that anticipated Christmas gift that you know what it is, but you want to savor the moment. 😁😁
Well, I made my musical Voltron complete recently acquiring the Octatrack, combined w/ the Digitakt and here you are throwing this at me now?!? How dare you Ricky! No! I’m done, finished, my gear slutting days are over now, I’m out! Killer synth though bro. 🤣

1 thing i look forward to doing is using trigger mode on sequencer combined with paraphonic mode, using the sequence lane to change shape values. Should produce some cool chord sounds
Thanks dude I definitely gotta get this. Once all the crazy passes. 💕
I’m seriously considering this for my first hardware synth. Thx for the great vid RT 🙌
Damn. That trick with the glide is dope.
I bought a Pro 2 but found it rather underwhelming. After it developed a glitch in the display I returned it and bought a used PolyEvolver which is fun but a bit unpredictable. But this Pro 3 looks awesome and seems a big step up from the Pro 2. Might have to spring for it.
Hope not to interrupt you and pro3 on honeymoon? Would very much appreciate a follow up video (maybe on any fresh musical ideas it had inspired?)
Really dreamy. Seems quick to dial it and create some Magick. Lots of controls.
Some of that went into really interesting territory. Mars volta synth sections
wow if they make a smaller desktop version im sold
Smaller? You mean a box that you can plug a midi controller into?
izzzzzz6 well yes any device that I would be using as a “daw less brain”
@@mougabo Yes, it can actually be a pretty good solution, i have an old Roland XV 20 20. It's synth in a box, it's a little limited but once i plug it into my Novation 25 i can access many features such as filters, oscillators, portamento, release etc.
TBH this is fairly old tech now and i never got to grips on how many features i can really access for example, i wonder if i could implement or access some sort of arpeggiator with my setup but i doubt it's possible with that combination. Perhaps by programming it into the synth box by means of putting patches together but it would be a bit long winded and i never got to grips with all that, it's a bit tedious.
try the Tempest in synth mode ;)
Why? Go big or go home.
I wasn’t going to get another synth but the pro 3 really grabs my ear and I’ll have to have it when they’re here in the uk. Soon.😎
Thanks Ricky! Like you, the Pro 3 was my fastest synth purchase ever.
I would be all over this if it just had more voices. I do a ton of large pads and the features of this thing on an 8 voice synth would be earth shattering.
That’s basically a Prophet 12.
There’s a key shortcut on the pro2 for init patch that’s like left latch + keyboard hold. I bet there’s something similar in the manual for the pro3 :)
Transpose Down + Slider's Latch Button!!!! Thanks Adam!
From the Evolver over a decade ago, which I wrote him saying it was the best $500 I ever spent, and he resonded! to today... Dave's just having fun now... synth afterburners!
Great Demo!! I LOve this Synth!! 😍
Dave Smith keeps rolling them out
Almost a year later do you still feel the same way about the pro 3?
#44 sitting in my studio. Its really a industrial music weapon, its brilliant 👏
I’ve been dreaming about a sub 37 for years but I feel like I have to get this.
Same! I even had a Subsequent 37 ordered for weeks (was not in stock in my country, still isn't) but I just cancelled the order because today I've decided to watch some Pro 3 videos. Now I'm not sure what to do, lol.
@@martinmohyla ahahahahah exactly the same here! Sub37 it’s out of stock by Thomann, while Pro3 is in stock... 😰
I have a subsequent 37. It’s beautiful. My pro 3 SE comes next week. Get both!
I’d recommend getting both were kind of different the sub 37 is only a duo voice
Mine just got delivered to my door about an hour again! I still haven’t opened the box...it’s like that anticipated Christmas gift that you know what it is, but you want to savor the moment. 😁😁
And you want to wait until Christmas? ;P
Dave owes you a Beer Ricky, just pre-ordered one of these purely on the strength of your Video....... Great job! ... :)
steve cook same here
26:00 that’s some Moog territory. Cool sound!
Well, I made my musical Voltron complete recently acquiring the Octatrack, combined w/ the Digitakt and here you are throwing this at me now?!? How dare you Ricky! No! I’m done, finished, my gear slutting days are over now, I’m out!
Killer synth though bro. 🤣
