Pretty much everyone who's seen it agrees this version is THE version of the FF. Corman stayed true to the comic as much as he could and was famous for putting out movies that not only had very low budgets but were delivered on time and almost always made money or at the very least broke even. 1) Reed and Doom were not just college students in the movie; they were graduate students. [In the comics, Doom didn't last his freshman year due to an explosion in his room.]
    2) In the comics, Reed & Ben were college roommates, Sue was the girlfriend of Reed, and Johnny was the tagalong younger brother. They gained their powers when they flew through cosmic rays.
    3) In the comics, Ben & Alicia (the blind woman) fell in love after the accident; something about having a knightly soul in the body of a monster. FWIW while canonically Grimm is basically a Ken doll, he can shift back to human for one day/year. The chair and burning gags are running jokes in the comics.
    4) Yes, Doom has a castle; he is the leader of a small European country, after all. However, his "doctor" status is debatable considering he only lasted as a semester or two in college.
    5) FWIW Reed's stretching gives him a certain degree of invulnerability, and there's been debate if it helps his intelligence by making his brain more plastic. Sue isn't just proud of her costume, BTW: In the comics, they're made of "unstable molecules" that allow them to use their powers without destroying their clothes (Reed's clothes don't normally stretch with him, for example). They can treat any clothes with them.
    6) Lasers go at the speed of light, goofballs, or about 186,000+ miles per second.

So he's still alive like thousands of years later because he only is a human like 1 week a year. He died in the year 6,000+ which was like 77 years worth of 'human aging'

The reason in Canon for the Fantastic Four (and many Marvel Superheroes) to have outfits that they wear all the time was actually because of Reed Richards. Early in the run, Reed invented "Unstable Molecules," a substance that could be turned in to fabric. It's main ability is it's not affected by the powers of the wearer. The thing about this movie never having seen a proper release is that is was made mainly so that german company Constantin Film could renew the license rights. They had to make use of said license to do so. Enter Roger Corman.

    The Fantastic Four (1994, unreleased)
Bernd Eichinger of Constantin Film acquired the film rights of the Fantastic Four from Marvel Comics in 1986. In order to maintain the rights, Eichinger hired Roger Corman in 1992 to produce a low-budget film. Source Wikipedia.

The original guy they hired for the computer effects lied about his experience. They had very little time and budget to get anything done. The part where Johnny flies into the laser beam and gets spun around etc. is one-for-one copied from one of the 1940s Fleischer Superman shorts, which are amazing by the way.
The studio wouldn't put anything into promotion, so the director and cast got together and went to various conventions and stores promoting it themselves until they were forced to stop. They were very serious and proud of what they did, even though they knew it was cheesy and cheap, and they wanted it to be finished and seen. It was a very guerrilla production at the end as they were being abandoned due to a secret deal being made behind the scenes to junk the film and eventually make the FOX FF movie we got. The actor who played Doom, who was the son of the late great character actor Robert Culp, said in the documentary about the film that he is still willing to do the voice of Doom if they ever want to finish it.

Compared to the Reb Brown Captain America of the 70s, or the 1990 version, or that super lame David Hasselhoff Nick Fury TV movie, or worst, Steel, this is a freakin' masterpiece! It actually *tries* to be faithful to the comic books, even if it's a little silly at times.

Yes, Doctor Doom has a castle. He was the ruler of an entire country, after all. He probably had several castles.
Also, this had a million dollar budget and had some really basic effects...goes to show that if you wanted a movie to look halfway decent you'd need something more than that. And at the very least some people who know what they're doing. xD
But hell, the people who made this went for it at least, even it never got fully released.

The story of this movie is fascinating. In short Roger Corman was used to test a Fantastic Four movie. He thought he was being honestly employed to make the film but he got back stabbed by Marvel who canned the whole project. They even banned him from keeping any copies of the film. He did anyway and finished the movie in very restricted conditions. What he produced is a way better film than the reputation has it. I have a copy on dvd and it's actually a really good film. It suffers from having it's budget pulled half way through and the production team having to cobble together the finished project in secret with very limited resources. But, the essence of it is very good. And the Thing costume is remarkably good. If Marvel gave Corman their full backing it could have been the start of the Fantastic Four getting the attention they deserved. While I think all the FF movies had merit, they were not quite where the fans would have liked them to be. Roger Corman got closer to the real essence of the FF on film than probably anyone else.

Dr Doom is awesome. He does live in a castle, because he owns his own country in eastern europe. He's also a genius in science and the occult. He's really the ultimate good guy, he knows he can only save the world and humanity by becoming a dictator, all the omniscient gods admit he's right. Also, doombots.
I like the Venture Bros fantastic four stand ins, where the human torch guy is in agony when he's on fire.

So this film was made in an insanely short amount of time, like a couple of weeks before the rights lapsed. It exists purely to prevent the rights from reverting to the original owners. They never in tended to release the film, but none of the actors were ware of this. It's why they all give decent performances. They had a few well respected in the industry, but not well known in general actors in the cast. Even they young Sue Storm was played by Mercedes McNabb, who went on to play a lot of Guest Starring and recurring roles over the next couple of decades.
No one is quite sure how it ever got leaked.
Honestly, It is a pity they didn't put in the time to do the audio work and colour grading, and then actually release it. As hokey as It is, when it comes to the storyline, it is the most accurate and coherent, and therefore it is the best live action Fantastic Four film.

    • @davidmullen6011
      @davidmullen6011 8 месяцев назад

Agreed - it's interesting to watch as it is very faithful to the comics, the main cast is decent, and it's basically a television film, but unfinished. This was made in the same bracket as the Return of the Incredible Hulk films, similarly cheap. and in the context of early 90s films of this kind a lot of it stands up. It was never going to be any sort of classic, and yet you can definitely see real potential in there. If only it had a little more money spent on it, and had proper audio finishing and effects...

I saw that same VHS rental ad from a Blockbuster tape, Jason. Only watched this film free on RUclips recently. It's hokey but it was made super-cheap just for the rights, the cast and crew had to finish it themselves once they realized they were being screwed on purpose. One thing I want to mention is that Sue can be incredibly dangerous in comics (she has smacked around Doom a few times, including turning his armor invisible so his disfigurement is exposed for everyone to see). And Ben/Thing is very strong and resilient, having fought the Hulk multiple times (he was facially scarred for a while by Wolverine's claws).

Jeez, I freakin' LOVE this movie! I get more genuine enjoyment out of any five minutes of it than I did out of all the obscenely expensive, but dry and soulless Marvel versions put together. Plus, the Thing looks WAY more like he does in the comics than in any of those. This really should've been one of the signs of the apocalypse: Roger Corman spending money on something he didn't expect to make a profit from. Be that as it may, the people who made this put heart into it and you can feel it.

On the Reed/Sue age topic - People forget that just a few years before the FF came out, girls marrying young was the norm.....Many girls in the 50's were married by the time they were 15, (or even 14) to men that were usually 10-15 years older than them. It was even more common 30 years before that....In the depression, young girls were married off because it gave the parents one less mouth to feed (pretty harsh) - so the concept of an older Reed and a younger Sue was not viewed as being super cringy back then.
