I was just starting to implement aggressive sidestepping, and it felt really good, so I'm glad you're here to tell me to do it a bit less instead of more and more.
Same. He is making me realise how many bad habits I picked up in 7 thanks to bad advice online. I am glad I took a long break from that game and now I can relearn some stuff properly
I don't think offensive stepping is bad per se. As long as you're not flowcharting it, it's fine. If you notice your opponent likes jab checking you after blocking a DF1, by all means, step and launch that shit.
Jokes aside, it was SO NICE to have a less experienced player asking questions as part of the video - they asked a lot of questions I wanted the answers to, and really improved the value I got out of this Also Judy Cruh, lol
You’re doing amazing work for beginners, it helps understand the way Tekken works more and also good tips to get better, all of this in a calming and entertaining way
Absolute gem of a video. PhiDX is really the best learning resource out there right now. I fear a bit that the prospect of labbing all kinds of situations of two consecutive moves will seem overwhelming to people. I think it is really important to get some quick wins! Maybe you could do a video on typical flowcharts to blow up by sidestepping. (Bryan b1 on block into df2 -> SSR to beat etc.)
The questions BoxBox is asking make me really happy because not only does it show that he’s very seriously trying to engage with the learning process, it’s causing him to learn a fundamental truth about Tekken and all fighting games: these games are built on edge cases and sometimes stuff just doesn’t make sense
Great tips man! For both new and returning players. Like Max said "Hold back after ss!?" So many little things we forget/ never mentioned about tekken.
Hey Phi, this is unrelated to this video but I followed your advice on your last video about learning how to punish properly and being more patient and waiting strings out has helped so much, I am almost out of the red ranks :D
This man is a goldmine for people like me. Been a Tekken player for like more than a decade but I feel like I learned so much about stand blocking, punishment, when to SS, etc in the past few days than I ever did for the last decade or so. Making my way through yellow ranks and it felt insurmountable to me before I checked this channel, but it's unbelievable how much 'comfortable' the yellow ranks became after watching his tips.
I never want to hear the words Virtua Fighter is too hard ever again lmao. This game just has layers of obtuse need to know knowledge and we are lucky to have you explain this stuff in a way that makes sense! Thank you Phi.
This is true. In VF sidestep and tracking moves are much more standardized and therefore far easier to understand. I think is one of the reasons VF has had an in depth tutorial in the past but Tekken never really has. It's too complicated to cover all this.
YO this is actually a goated video. You titled it about SIdestepping but there is SO much info in here for HOW TEKKEN works differently than other fighting games for FGC vets who never really played tekken
Great video man. I've been tryna coach my friend in Tekken, and I'm just getting to the point where I'm trying to explain the importance of movement/positioning. Now I can just have him watch this lol
I really enjoy that you're able to go into detail about why to practice certain things. Your channel has been clearer in explanation than even the greats like Judicruh
Loving the collabs dude! You’re fostering such an inclusive and informative environment in a way so few others do. Your passion is reflected in what you’ve been doing and I’m confident you’ll be a huge part of growing the community. You deserve all the success for your continued hard work 👍
Damn never thought i'd see boxbox opening up the game, immediately looking for a TMM guide and now even phidx coaching 😹 The man who started the whole riven thing for me
Bro I so needed this! I just subbed to your channel. I'm stuck in the orange ranks at Destroyer and I get irritated when I cant evade Jun and Lili's combos
So this Tekken actually gives you more options to practice these things. Watching your replays, you can take control of the situation for ten seconds to see what you need to do against it. It allows for you to SPECIFICALLY practice tech against your opponents.
What @phidx said around @20:55 says speaks to me. The frequency approach is what I've been doing to learn throw breaking. The muscle memory builds in the downtime.
hey, i havent had much time to catch you live but i have a favor to ask: i would really love a video (even if its a short one) where you breakdown round starts and what player especially beginner need to expect or aim for when a round start. now i am nowhere near to a good tekken player but i am also improving and the beginning of tekken rounds reminds me of chess games where people have different kinds of behaviour starting a round, thats why i would love to see you breaking down the important things of beginnings of a round. thanks!
On the point at 21:40 , Different people play the same character in a different style. It's amazing because it shows how they all can come up with their own style and at the same time it's tough because you can't learn to memorize all of their styles. So yeah, 8 or 24 hour lab against a single character does not mean you can beat all the players in the world who use that character. It's impossible. Muscle memory improves over time with experience and by playing lots of people you're exposed to new techniques and setups, and your mind needs time to adapt to them in order for muscle memory to kick in.
4:10 Not sure if it comes up later, but for anyone wondering how this move gets away being only -6, it doesn't launch crouchers, instead becoming +5 on hit. So low reward for calling out crouchers, but great for frame traps or punishes.
Been watching your vids since I started learning, and I have a question. Would you or would you not recommend using "special style" to an absolute noob who wants to set in the basics (movement, punishes, bread and butter combos), and then go from there? Or it would be bad because I'd have to relearn to play "properly"?
Love the vids, any chance for some kind of general wall combo guide? I'm not really sure what to do after a wall splat outside of memorising lots of combos for every distance from the wall.
@PhiDX what are your thoughts on Kuma side swap paw and big wind up low paw? It seems like that move is guaranteed or maybe it just Im only person getting hit by that even on the ground with quick stand up
I love sidestepping now. I felt so proud of myself the other day when I sidewalked to the center of the ring so I didn’t have to deal with wall-carry combos. It just adds a whole new layer to the match that’s fun to explore. 3D is all I need. 😉
This video is like the holy grail I've been looking for. I just started with this game and I picked Nina cause she's Irish and has guns, just to find out no one plays her and there's no guides. So I watch Nina gameplay and see them do the sidestep cancel stuff and try to do it and get blown up. Now I know I gotta get in there and lab what options characters have and how to counter them. I just wish there was more Nina content, I can't find her frame traps =(
