On distasteful angles in this set, I think there's a whole angle to point out where you sell $10 boosters with the set title and messaging MODERN MODERN MODERN, and then your rare is Kaalia of the Vast, or 5 CMC esper legend that has 0 chance of seeing constructed play. Commander has the market cornered the other 11 months out of the year, can we get this one thing without being tainted by it.
Can't stand EVERY set having so much design space taken up by commander cards. They literally get commander precons for every damn set, but the main expansion still is jam packd full of commander trash.
I felt like Modern was a format where the mana ramp was meant to be restricted. Spirit Guide and Seething Song and some Moxen got banned for that reason. Now we get Ugins Labryinth + Phyrexian Tower? Also, learning allll the way into energy - which was at best decisive - makes no sense to me. Wizards seems to be deciding Eldrazi and Energy will be their 1.
Disruptor flute having flash is a real "but why?" moment because none of the abilities on it add a lot of relevance when done in response to something you or your opponent may be doing, it also feels like is that how we're making SB cards good by stapling a keyword ability onto them. Also just card text formatting wise the eldrazi having their keyword abilities on the very bottom of the card I understand the logic of putting abilities after cast triggers but I also think we perfected formatting creatures with putting all of the keywords at the top no need to reinvent the wheel of how to write a text box.
Invert polarity should really be “you may cast the card next turn with any color mana” or something like that instead of just gain control of the spell. Or make it only target instants and sorceries.
I like watching modern but it's impossible to buy into it exactly becaude of that forced rotation. Besides the financial cost, the time required to be GOOD at a game that gets such frequent and huge updates is another thing that pushes me away. It is really a full time job to play modern
Yeah i dont love the fact that Modern has become a rotating money pit of a format due to MH sets but thats the world we live in. Though there are certainly players who enjoy that, with the very high power level cards.
12:54 What do you mean? It has always been the point of modern hoorizons to add super-busted cards to the format that make all the previous archetypes obsolete and force modern players to buy all the new cards. That is why I do not participate in modern anymore.
Im surprised no one is playing modern but no straight to modern sets. I guess its hard to invest in a format thats guaranteed to have no support, and has no official banlist
You think Flare of Denial isn’t a reactive card and Reverse Polarity is anywhere near good enough to be tournament defining? Sorry, I can’t take this video seriously if those are the boogeymen you’re worried about.
Wouldn't you consider Force of Will proactive? Flare is very similar. Reverse polarity is very close to playable, if not straight up playable. If it is playable, it's gonna feel bad to play with and against.
Are we really worrying about a card like flare of denial that requires the sacing of a NONTOKEN blue creature? There are so few decks that want this card that even run creatures to begin with? And most don't run creatures. It's pretty much for merfolk and MAYBE some wizard shell. That's it.
It's gonna limit future card design significantly. Blue got the best flare effect, but has the worst creatures to sac. We'll see how it develops, but Wizards are setting themselves up to fail with this cycle.

Key Design Principle for Modern Horizons 3: make lotsa money
Obsolete as many cards as possible. Force people to need this product for competitive Magic.

When the world needed him most, he returned.
Incredible breakdown of the design principles and where MH3 is obviously falling way short. Great video. Recommended for WOTC.
I’m glad that people are speaking out critically
happy to see this series back! keep it up my friend
When you wrote "Naya Angelou" in a Sick of It article like 10 years ago, that shit still lives rent free in my head.

Great content as always, can't wait for part 2, keep it up!
Hitting the nail on the head with this one.
You should do a “how power creep became the story of the year”, every year. Because sadly, that’s where we are now. 😔
Happy to see more videos!
thank you for doing this again!

happy to see the return of sick of it to bring out some healthy constructive criticism
You respond to permanents like the one ring or a plane walker with the flute and name them. That one makes sense
Now this is kino.

Its called Modern Horizons, but really, these are all Eternal level cards.

Unsolicited advice/request : please put the card images on the unused half of the screen instead of small at the bottom. Thanks for the content!
my advice to you : to write such a comment it makes you look like a complete tool, i am shocked how this is even real i would be so ashamed

Nice

i like it getting shaken up every couple of years
A lot of the players who enjoy that, incidentally in many cases the players paid to advertise it

MtGA users have to caveat emptor more because their cards are subject to finger snapping "ALCHEMY FIXES".

Check out d00mwake for non-horizon modern (pure modern?) content. He hosts tournaments and stuff.
