just ordered from company. Cheaper than buying from Amazon.
Amazon had them listed at $15.00
      company sold them for
      $1.80 each.
just go to company and click their colors chart. for the
      white
      lite blue
      lite green
I use orange instead of red.
      yellow
      my total was around $10.00
      I wanted expedite shipping.
or shipping would have been free.

When we first stated marking queens, we were doing them as soon as they were mated. We lost a bunch of them due to the stress. They do better, and less apt to fly away, after they are a few weeks post emergence.

This is my first year beekeeping...since april 1 when i installed my package I've marked my queen three times. Last wed. I marked her and did three coats of that paint marker. Just checked them today [Sunday} and they've cleaned it off of her again. So I'm ordering this pen and next time I get into the box, I will be marking her with these. Thanks for the video!

Kamon I too started using the same pens last year after seeing video. They do dry quick and stay put. I ordered these pens from Marking Pen Depot for $1.75 each. Ordered all the standard marking colors and a couple others to lower overall cost to cover minimum S&H charge. I wish I had ordered more as they are great for other tasks around the farm too.

Thank you for the show and tell video! I've once marked a queen, similar size as the one in this vid, and as I moved her to my other hand she took OFF! Luckily I was able to slap her down a few times. My heart dropped. I ended up corralling her back in my hand and cage. Lesson learned!

I've been pretty happy with these pens. Picked them up last year based on Bob's video. I like that there are additional colors, so I can mark them a different color. (Color rebel) Have had a little color rubbing off, but not near as bad as the catalog pens.

After reading through the comments, I noted one which sort of addressed the question I had regarding enamel paint. I'm just not too crazy about using a paint with solvent on my queens. So I did a small bit of research on it and noted the part about the MPD-X not being acceptable for marking. The MPD-X that I saw was the fine (1mm) tip. The MPD-15 is the medium, and if you go to the manufacturer's website, you will find some comments at the bottom of the page listing info on the pen in which they state it is bee-safe. You can order them one at a time or more. I went ahead and ordered the whole line worth. Thank you Kamon for this information. Best regards.

  • @richardreid2059

I really like the Sharpie oil base extra fine point. You have much more control with the smaller tip and the mark lasts much longer than Posca. Been using them 5 years with good results.

Talking about queens flying off on you. My neighbor had a very small swarm on the front of his hive from a supersedure this fall, as I was digging in it I seen the old queen start to fly off, I then grabbed her out of thin air lol. I felt like superman lol. We put her in a two framer with the frame of bees with her, but she wouldn't lay anymore. Then we knew why they superseded. She was a commercial queen btw.

3:54 did I see red pollen in the cells?
Holding queens is something beekeepers all do a little differently. I was taught by a pollinator to grab the queen by the wings and then with the other hand hold two legs. Now she's pinned and it's easy to mark. I have a tendency to shake with a queen in my fingers and I would be afraid I'd squish her with your method. I imagine if I learned to hold a queen your way (years ago) I'd be just fine with it.

I just received my order of these pens and will be remarking the queen today. I have marked her three times already and they keep wiping the mark off. I think I purchased the wrong markers prior to starting my first year of beekeeping. Only think I'm kind of bummed out about right now is this year is Green and the MPD-15 green marker is a dark forest green and hah...well, Queen is getting marked for sure today but I'm not to thrilled that it isn't exactly a color that will be easily seen. lol. I may mark her a different color just because of that.

I really like that you are breeding for longevity. As ya know I'm just a newb, but it seems many keepers are shooting themselves in the foot by not focusing on long term queen life span. Queens use to be viable for years, now most have been breed to burn out in a year or two, good for a seller, bad for the buyer in my book. You mentioned Carni and Russians like to run with cells sitting? My most my starting stock are carni and russian, ty for the nugget of knowledge. Been a keeper for 2 mo still not seen my moma-bee, just eggs+. Been practicing picking up drones now that my hive has boys, also bought 1 of those push up boxes and a pen though it appears the pen is a Posca TOTALLY not USA made.🤮 Have to see about getting 1 of those MPD-15.🥳
😇Bible says eat honey it is good for you, also says don't eat to much, it will make you sick.😇I do try to do what God says.😇Love me some honey.😇sorry got long again 🤠Ty for sharing your families time and all the advice, keep up the great work. Blessed Days...

  • @Ovenmitt123
    @Ovenmitt123 2 года назад +1

POSCA pens, which are so highly recommended... are pretty bad. The best part for posca is if you do make a mistake and paint a sensitive area on the queen, the bees have an easier time correcting it.
These enamel pens aren't as user friendly, and if you do make a mistake, the bees will not be as likely to walk it back and make it ok.
I'd suggest buying a POSCA and practice with it first, then buy and enamel once you are confident in your methods.
